He left home aged 17 to join a gold rush in the Transvaal in South Africa, where he became involved in the conflict between British and Boer settlers; he travelled to the scene of another gold rush in Yukon in north-west Canada; he spent a few years cattle-ranching in Montana, USA. His first novel The Devil's Keg, set in Alberta, Canada, was published in 1903. After its success he settled in Britain and became a full-time writer. Several of his novels were made into films.

Download or read book Mediaeval Socialism (Esprios Classics) written by Bede Jarrett and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The title of this book may not unnaturally provoke suspicion. After all, howsoever we define it, socialism is a modern thing, and dependent almost wholly on modern conditions. It is an economic theory which has been evolved under pressure of circumstances which are admittedly of no very long standing. How then, it may be asked, is it possible to find any real correspondence between theories of old time and those which have grown out of present-day conditions of life? Surely whatever analogy may be drawn between them must be based on likenesses which cannot be more than superficial."First published in 1913. Includes chapters on Social Conditions, the Communists, the Schoolmen, the Lawyers, the Social Reformers and the Theory of Alms-Giving.

Book Synopsis The Lawyers: A Drama in Five Acts (Esprios Classics) by : Augustus William Iffland

This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: August Wilhelm Iffland (19 April 1759 - 22 September 1814) was a German actor and dramatic author. Born in Hanover, his father intended him to be a clergyman, but Iffland preferred the stage, and at eighteen ran away to Gotha in order to prepare himself for a theatrical career. Iffland produced the classical works of Goethe and Schiller with conscientious care, but he had little understanding for the drama of the romantic writers. As an actor, he was conspicuous for his comedy parts: fine gentlemen, polished men of the world, and distinguished princes. The form of play in which Iffland was most at home, both as an actor and playwright, was the domestic drama, the sentimental play of everyday life.
Book Synopsis Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc (Esprios Classics) by : Mark Twain
Download or read book Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc (Esprios Classics) written by Mark Twain and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc is an 1896 novel by Mark Twain that recounts the life of Joan of Arc. It is Twain's last completed novel, published when he was 61 years old. The novel is presented as a translation (by "Jean Francois Alden") of memoirs by Louis de Conte, a fictionalized version of Louis de Contes, Joan of Arc's page. The novel is divided into three sections according to Joan of Arc's development: a youth in Domrémy, a commander of the army of Charles VII of France, and a defendant at trial in Rouen. Originally, the novel was published as a serialization in Harper's Magazine beginning in April 1895. Twain, aware of his reputation as a comic, asked that each installment appear anonymously so that readers would treat the piece seriously. Regardless, his authorship soon became known, and the book edition published by Harper and Brothers in May 1896 credited Mark Twain.
