Countermeasures that are commonly used nowadays still have disadvantages to some extent. This work is among one of the ongoing efforts to explore reliable alternatives. Inspired by the streamlined body of boxfish and blue shark, this study introduced streamlining features to the bridge piers in order to reduce the erosive forces locally. Based on the excess shear stress criteria, the Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) numerical model was employed to optimize the streamlined features through parametric studies. The maximum bed shear stress around the optimal streamlined pier was shown to be reduced by ~34% as compared to that around a non-streamlined pier. Further simulation using the advanced Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) model revealed that the streamlined pier also helped reduce the locally turbulence dynamics, which played a significant role in local scour. A set of small-scale flume tests were then conducted in the laboratory to characterize the flow physics and scour behavior of uniform Ottawa sand around piers with various streamlined extents. The experimental results further confirmed the effectiveness of pier streamlining in scour reduction. The maximum scour depth around the streamlined pier was reduced by ~66% as compared to that around a non-streamlined pier. Through monitoring the pore pressure response within sand, the role of vortex-induced excess pore pressure that plays in the scour mechanism was discussed. The vortex-induced excess pore pressure also helped to partially account for an interestingly counterintuitive observation from an independent experiment: the local scour resistance was a slightly decreasing function of the granular bulk density. Finally, a CFD-DEM (Discrete Element Model) two-way coupled model was established to simulate the scour behavior of uniform spherical particles around an oblong pier. The two-phase model successfully captured the characteristic local scour behaviors, and thus may serve as a platform of great potential to further investigate the scour mechanism at microscale in the future. Tremendous efforts were also made to review applications of the emerging two-phase numerical models to the broad flow-induced erosion problems.

Bridge scour refers to the loss of sediment around bridge foundations, and it occurs when the erosive force from the flow exceeds the resistance from the soil. This article presents an experimental study on the effectiveness of two nature-inspired countermeasures for scour control and prevention, namely, streamlining and biocementation. On one hand, inspired by the streamlined form of the boxfish and the blue shark, this study introduced streamlining features (i.e., sloped nose and concaved sidewalls) for bridge piers in order to reduce the erosive forces in the vicinity of the piers. On the other hand, inspired by the natural process of microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) in soil, a polymer-modified MICP method is developed to "cement" the coarse-grained sand in order to increase the erosion resistance. Accordingly, two series of experimental tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of these two countermeasures: (1) based on the numerical results of a pier streamlining optimization study, four small-scale pier models with different streamlining levels were constructed using 3D printing techniques, and flume tests were conducted to characterize the scour process around these models; (2) Ottawa graded sand treated via the polymer-modified MCIP method was tested in the flume to investigate its effectiveness on bridge scour control. The experimental results revealed that both streamlining and biocementation could significantly reduce or even fully prevent the scour around the model bridge piers under the laboratory testing conditions.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Physics - Mechanics, University of Engineering & Technology Peshawar, language: English, abstract: The objective of the study is to conduct laboratory model testing to investigate and compare scour hole depth of the diamond, square and elliptical scaled model of bridge piers in a cohesion less bedding material under clear water and to propose the most efficient cross section of the bridge pier, having less Local scour around piers under steady clear-water condition was studied experimentally for a variety of configuration, including different sizes and shapes of piers. Total number of forty experiments were performed in the flume using diamond, square and elliptical shape. The scouring around the square shape was found maximum and at elliptical shape was the least. The main reason was obstruction in flow area that was more in case of the square and less in case of the elliptical shape. However, the diamond shaped has the intermediate scouring under same condition. Local scour is a complex phenomenon involving three-dimensional flow, typically developed around piers founded in movable bed rivers. Local scour can lead to partial failure or to collapse of bridge piers because of the high flood velocity. The cost of large bridges, with common and special complex piers, justifies carrying out an accurate prediction of scour depth, for both economic and safety reasons, which in turn leads to the interest of hydraulic engineers in predicting the equilibrium scour depth.

Book excerpt: Abstract : Local scour is a major cause of concern for the stability of bridge piers and the safety of the public using the bridges. Structural countermeasures and flow-altering devices have been developed to deal with local scour. Many armoring structural countermeasures are very effective and efficient in clear water conditions but are susceptible to moving bed forms and leaching. The flow-altering devices are effective in both clear water conditions and moving bed forms, but are prone to clogging, less efficient in changing flow direction, etc. This study aims to reduce the local scour by injecting air in order to reduce the effect of the scour-inducing downward roller flow pattern by harnessing the buoyancy of the injected air bubbles. A clear-water scour experimental study is conducted in a rectangular channel with a pier embedded in a sand bed. Air is injected through a horizontal diffuser pipe wound around the upstream half of the cylindrical bridge pier. Measurements were taken for maximum local scour depth, water surface profile, rate of scour, centerline scour elevation and channel bed profile at the equilibrium condition. The ratio of velocity of air to the velocity of water (Va/Vw) was chosen as the non-dimensional variable for this study and was considered the most suitable representation and for ease of scalability. The air injection reduced the local scour at bridge piers in equilibrium conditions by nearly 35%. This scour reduction is caused by a change in flow patterns around the bridge piers with the injection of air bubbles. A dye test was performed for the base case (without air injection) and the optimal case (Va/Vw = 57.1) to observe the change in flow behavior around the pier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridge piers within moving water are exposed to an additional failure mechanism known as scour. Upon the scour depth reaching the foundation of the pier, the structural integrity of the pier, and consequently the bridge, can be jeopardized. Bridge pier scour is the result of a three-dimensional flow separation consisting primarily of the horseshoe vortex, flow acceleration along the sides of the pier, and wake vortices. There are numerous factors that can affect bridge pier scour, of which many of them have been studied extensively. However, there are still some factors where the knowledge base is limited: one example is the presence of an ice cover around bridge piers. In order to reduce the risk of failure induced by scour, regardless of the cause, a preferred option is to use scour countermeasures. However, an ideal countermeasure does not exist. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to design and test an improved bridge pier scour countermeasure, while also better understanding the effects an ice cover has on scour. Achieving a new countermeasure design consisted of a hybrid approach that combined both numerical and experimental modelling. The numerical model was used in an iterative manner to expedite the design process, as well as to reduce experimental costs. Upon testing and improving the initial collar design numerically, physical models were constructed for the purpose of testing experimentally. Experimental tests were performed at a 1:30 scale in the presence of a sand bed. The same experimental setup was used to investigate bridge pier scour under an ice cover, except a rigid structure was constructed to replicate an ice cover. The artificial ice cover possessed either a smooth or a rough underside and was installed in such a way to replicate a floating or fixed (pressurized) ice cover. The purpose of the new countermeasure design was to improve on the flat plate collar by guiding the horseshoe vortex in a novel manner. By doing so, the quantity of erosive forces contacting the bed was greatly reduced. In order to reach a final design, a series of prototype designs were tested, and are outlined in this thesis, as they provide valuable insight into the scour problem. The final countermeasure design resembles a contoured collar but is made of riprap, where it was found to reduce the scour depth and volume by 81.0% and 92.3%, respectively, while using 18% less riprap than the conventional flat riprap countermeasure. Upon investigating scour in the presence of an ice cover, it was found that the quantity of scour increases as the ice cover becomes rougher and as the flow becomes more pressurized beneath. Specifically, the scour depth under the rough ice cover and the most pressurized condition increased by 412%. It was demonstrated that implementing any device which increases the width of the pier has inherent limitations for reducing scour. Instead, having a depression around the pier, especially made of riprap, such that it is flush with the bed and can help guide the horseshoe vortex, was found to greatly reduce scouring. Furthermore, it was observed that the presence of any ice cover on the surface of the water generates greater pier scour, therefore necessitating that ice cover always be taken into consideration when designing bridges in cold climates.
