Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures of Travel, Sport, and Adventure Those of the "Pictures" bound together in this volume which have reference to South Africa were originally written in New Zealand, in 1876, in a book of African travels intended for publication. Pressure of journalistic work prevented me finishing this book, and the manuscript was lost for more than a dozen years. The "Pictures," therefore, do not exhaust the story of my African travels, for in 1872 and 1873 I made hunting trips to South Gazaland, in 1874 one to South Mashunaland via Zoutpansberg, and the same year one to the mainland opposite Zanzibar, which are not referred to. The details of these are not now sufficiently fresh in my memory to justify me in describing them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel, Adventure, and Sport, Vol. 1: From 'Blackwood's Magazine' One hint must especially be regarded, which was, to take care, on arrival at the lake, that I did not enter the village of a certain sultan called Mahaya, to whose district Muanza, at the southern extremity of the lake, they directed me to go. This precautionary warning was advanced in consequence of a trick the Sultan had played an Arab, who, after visiting him in a friendly way, was forcibly detained until he paid a ransom for himself; an unjust measure, which the Arabs pointedly advert to as destructive to commercial interests. To lose no time whilst the kirangozi was away - for I had a long business to do in a very short space of time - I intimated to the Shaykh, our Ras-cafila, and the Belooch guards, my intention of taking them with me to the lake, and ordered them to prepare for the journey by a certain date. The Shaykh demurred, saying he would give a definite answer about accompanying me before the time of starting, but subsequently refused (I hear, as one reason), because he did not consider me his chief. I urged that it was as much his duty as mine to go there; and said, unless he changed his present resolution, I should certainly recommend the Government not to pay the gratuity which the consul had promised him on condition that he worked entirely to our satisfaction, in assisting the expedition to carry out the Government's plans. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel, Adventure, and Sport From Blackwood's Magazine, Vol. 5 During a residence of five years in Hungary, I have had some notable experiences of storms and floods. The first phenomenon of the kind which I witnessed was the remarkable storm of the 26th of June 1875. On that occasion a waterspout burst on the mountains behind Buda, and together with Wind and hail de stroyed a considerable amount of property in the town and neighbourhood, causing also the death of nearly sixty people. The fury of this storm was far exceeded by the catastrophe which occurred on the last night of August 1878, at Miskolcz and Erlau, in the north-east of Hungary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures of Travel: Reisebilder They live no longer in the faith of reason. All this from a couplet which meant that the ancient myths no longer existed, but that the delightful race had vanished! It is true that Ruskin (athena in the Heavens) remarked that unless there was a question about some particular expression, he never translated literally, but gave the real force of what was said, as best he could, freely. The proper course in translation seems to be a middle one; preserving as much of the literal construction of the original as possible, but not at the expense of the general or detailed effect which the Author sought to give. Book excerpt: A CLASSIC MEMOIR OF TWO PIONEERING ADVENTURERS Before Joy Adamson went to Africa, before Margaret Mead sailed to Samoa, before Dian Fossey was even born, a Kansas teenager named Osa Leighty married Martin Johnson, a pioneering photographer just back from a ‘round-the-world cruise with Jack London. Together the Johnsons flew and sailed to Borneo, to Kenya, and to the Congo, filming Simba and other popular nature movies with Martin behind the camera and Osa holding her rifle at the ready in case the scene’s big game star should turn hostile. This bestselling memoir retraces their careers in rich detail, with precisely observed descriptions and often heart-stopping anecdotes. Illustrated with scores of the dramatic photos that made the Johnsons famous, it’s a book sure to delight every lover of true adventure.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wild Tribes of the Soudan: An Account of Travel and Sport Chiefly in the Base Country; Being Personal Experiences and Adventures, During Three Winters Spent in the Soudan The map of the Base' country that accompanies this vol ume was made by my brother, Mr. W. D. James, assisted by Mr. Aylmer, from astronomical observations taken with a sextant every night. They carefully mapped out our route every day by aid of the sextant and prismatic compass. It adds a portion, however small, to the map of Africa. The woodcuts were all done in New York, from my brother's and Mr. Aylmer's photographs, and are specimens of a branch of art in which Americans excel. I would, in conclusion, ask the indulgence of the public for this effort of one who for the first time publishes a record of his daily life and experiences in Africa.
