Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel Pictures, the Record of an European Tour A faithful picture must have its shading as well as its lights. My readers will, I trust, pardon the frank ness with which I have indicated what appeared in my humble opinion as shortcomings in the marvellous environment which has been created in Europe by science and goodwill. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures of Travel: Reisebilder They live no longer in the faith of reason. All this from a couplet which meant that the ancient myths no longer existed, but that the delightful race had vanished! It is true that Ruskin (athena in the Heavens) remarked that unless there was a question about some particular expression, he never translated literally, but gave the real force of what was said, as best he could, freely. The proper course in translation seems to be a middle one; preserving as much of the literal construction of the original as possible, but not at the expense of the general or detailed effect which the Author sought to give. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel-Pictures: Two Series Some travellers record all their annoyances, dwell in detail on every disenchantment, and, wherever they go, carry about an atmosphere of censorious unsympathy. Why, then, do they travel? Friendliness begets friendliness, the Greek proverb well says; and no land will unveil its beauty to such visitors. But let a man shun the crowded cosmopolitan cities, let him traverse leisurely the Open country with its unspoiled people, whether by Dutch canal or Alpine torrent, and I promise him delights such as those other wanderers knew when Outre Mer was all a region of wizardry, and every inn-window a magic casement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel-Pictures: Including the Tour in the Harz, Norderney, and Book of Ideas, Together With the Romantic School Readers some specimens of Heine's prose, I should like to state briefly the considerations that have guided me in my selection. It has long surprised me that in Spite of Heine's growing popularity in England - wit ness the biographies, monographs, magazine articles, and various versions of his lyrics that have. Lately appeared no Englishman' has hitherto undertaken a complete ver sion of the best known and most brilliant of Heine's prose writings. I therefore proposed to myself to translate the whole of the Reisebilder but as I proceeded with the work, I discovered that I had set myself an impossible task. Even in the first three books there occur passages which I felt some hesitation in admitting, but let pass as at worst faults of taste, and essential for a just appreciation of Heine's genius. With the fourth book of the Raise bilder, Italien, the case was different. Here, most of all, there is need of George Eliot's friendly penknife to exercise a strict censorship, and, owing doubtless to my want of surgical skill, I found that when I had excised from the Baths of Lucca all that was offensive to English taste and decency, what remained was little better. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Poet's Bazaar: Pictures of Travel in Germany, Italy, Greece, and the Orient From Thorwaldsen I got the first verbal account Of the Spanish dancers; he was transported and inspired, as I had never before seen him. That is a dance! There are attitudes! There are forms and beauty! Said he, and his eyes glistened while he spoke. See! One is in the South when one sees that dance! One forenoon when I entered his atelier, I saw a bass-relief representing a dancing Bacchus and Bacchante completed in clay. The Spanish dancers have given me the idea, said he 3 they also can dance thus; I' thought of their charming dance when I did this. The purpose of the author has been to draw, from personal experience, some pen-pictures of life and nature among the sublime mountains, crags, glaciers, and icebergs of Greenland. His original design was to publish a work of more pretentious size, in three parts, to be entitled, respectively, "Greenland," "Iceland," and "The Arctic Sea;" but, as he found the matter expanding to cumbersome proportions, he has divided the three parts into as many volumes.
