Book Synopsis Images of Childhood by : Paul Duncum
Download or read book Images of Childhood written by Paul Duncum and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-07-13 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a rich legacy of pictorial evidence, Images of Childhood examines historical constructions of childhood and how they reinforce or challenge the prevailing view of childhood as a state of innocence. Each chapter explores how visual elements such as framing, points-of view, and lighting, as well as clothes, accessories, and body language, help to construct our many different conceptions of children: from members of the family unit and assumed gender roles; to schooling and aesthetic objects; through to their economic value and use in political propaganda. Skillfully navigating a multitude of perspectives on this topic, Paul Duncum considers both how our ideas, beliefs and values have changed throughout history and how some have remained unchanged. He also explores the cultural notion of “the child within” and how this has contributed to the way adults perceive children. The result is a text far broader in scope than any other in its field, as art history is interweaved with contemporary popular culture to explore how we visually represent childhood. In doing so, the book highlights the real-life implications that these representations have on children's rights.
Book Synopsis Art and the Young Adolescent by : Frederick Palmer
Download or read book Art and the Young Adolescent written by Frederick Palmer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-17 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art and the Young Adolescent introduces a mode of instruction that encourages children between the ages of 11 to 15 to express themselves in artistic creation that do not necessarily represent the natural forms of things. It is intended that every kid finds enjoyment in creating works of art without being hindered by the child’s inability to create perfect replica of people and things. The book contains a list of materials and steps about such activities as collage creation, making an image by rubbing a pencil over a paper that covers a coin and tracing patterns on a paper. Selected activities are made to enhance the child’s self-expression. In addition to simple activities, possible creations of more complex projects by the child as he reached adulthood are cited in the book. The subject of the book is to increase the number of children engage in art. The text is intended for art teachers and teenagers in the art class.

Book Synopsis Young People's Images of Science by : Rosalind Driver
Download or read book Young People's Images of Science written by Rosalind Driver and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 1996-01-16 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * What ideas about science do school students form as a result of their experiences in and out of school? * How might science teaching in schools develop a more scientifically-literate society? * How do school students understand disputes about scientific issues including those which have social significance, such as the irradiation of food? There have been calls in the UK and elsewhere for a greater public understanding of science underpinned by, amongst other things, school science education. However, the relationship between school science, scientific literacy and the public understanding of science remains controversial. In this book, the authors argue that an understanding of science goes beyond learning the facts, laws and theories of science and that it involves understanding the nature of scientific knowledge itself and the relationships between science and society. Results of a major study into the understanding of these issues by school students aged 9 to 16 are described. These results suggest that the success of the school science curriculum in promoting this kind of understanding is at best limited. The book concludes by discussing ways in which the school science curriculum could be adapted to better equip students as future citizens in our modern scientific and technological society. It will be particularly relevant to science teachers, advisers and inspectors, teacher educators and curriculum planners.
