Book excerpt: Jesse Meeker and Riley Fourkiller establish the first ranches along Osage Creek in northwest Arkansas where they raise horses and mules. They trade with Zenas Leonard, an old mountain man, and then Jesse helps Captain Randolph Marcy blaze the 1849 California Trail and chases the murderers of Lieutenant Harrison, grandson of President William Harrison. Back home, the family has to deal with nightriding hoodlums and after an attack on their home, Jesse sells out and moves his family back to the Village on the Middle Fork. The family first travel the Cherokee Trail (not the Trail of Tears) west with gold seeking Cherokees. They stay at Bent's New Fort, trading horses and mules with travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. When Jesse returns to Arkansas, Zenas and his brother Jake stay, managing William Bent's horse herd. They winter at Bent's Picketwire Ranch and Zenas gets his first experience handling wild cattle. During the Civil War, he helps Mr. Bent haul material along the Santa Fe Trail. Hoping to settle in New Mexico Territory, he loses a herd of horses to Indians, trades along the Trail, and has an adventure with crooked gamblers and a stolen herd of horses.

With its detailed classification and pithy descriptions of titles, this book gives users valuable insights into what makes genre fiction appeal to readers. It is an invaluable aid for helping readers find books that they will enjoy reading. Providing a handy roadmap to popular genre literature, this guide helps librarians answer the perennial and often confounding question "What can I read next?" Herald and Stavole-Carter briefly describe thousands of popular fiction titles, classifying them into standard genres such as science fiction, fantasy, romance, historical fiction, and mystery. Within each genre, titles are broken down into more specific subgenres and themes. Detailed author, title, and subject indexes provide further access. As in previous editions, the focus of the guide is on recent releases and perennial reader favorites. In addition to covering new titles, this edition focuses more narrowly on the core genres and includes basic readers' advisory principles and techniques.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Spur Award for Best Western Historical Novel and Best First Novel He took a sip of hot black coffee brewed the old-time way, sat back in his chair, rocking gently. "My Grandpa was a pirate on the Mississip.” Thus began the story of four generations of the Harris-Meeker Clan, told from the memories of Zenas Leonard Meeker. In the Spring of 1806, Hiram Harris and his Cherokee wife Sarah left the east Tennessee hills, headed for New Madrid, a town on the Mississippi. Their encounter with a gang of river pirates left Hiram and Sarah dead on the banks of the Ohio River, their oldest son Samuel Vanished and their other children, Ruth, Jerry and baby Joseph, sold into slavery. It seems the very earth has turned against them in the floods and earthquakes of 1811-1812. But the Harris children miraculously escape to continue their extraordinary journey west. “Beautifully rendered…an agreeable opener to the Five Trails West series.”—Booklist

Book excerpt: Guarding the Treasure, this historical novel, is Book Three, of a trilogy in Under the Canyon Sky: centers on early Grand Canyon pioneers. By day, the Canyon, the main character in this story, flaunts wild colors and teasing shadows; by night, it sleeps under a canopy of shimmering stars. Sadly, the Federal government contemplates destruction of parts of Grand Canyon, that it worked so hard to protect, by damming the Colorado River and obliterating natural and cultural resources. Kirby and Sabrina O’Brien – as passionate defenders of the Canyon, they plunge into Colorado River dam controversies surrounding Bridge Canyon and Marble Canyon, while financing the design and construction of the Grand Canyon Pioneers Museum. Cody Livingston – Silver Star war hero, marries daughter of park engineer, becomes rancher, inherits entire cattle enterprise headquartered on the old stage road. He and wife Cora vow to continue Sabrina’s legacy to protect Grand Canyon. Russell Cramer – Park Engineer, agonizes over Village water supply issues, accepts Kirby’s ideas for a trans-canyon pipeline, opposes Reclamation’s proposed hydroelectric power dams, and organizes a search for radioactive rocks exposed in copper diggings. Witness a tragic suspension bridge collapse, river drownings, a train wreck, demolition of early historic hotels, a uranium scare, and the beginning of commercial river-running. Cross the troubled waters of the Colorado on a riveted steel replacement bridge leading to an Army camp, and a creek-fed swimming pool in the inner gorge. Wince at outlandish river dam proposals, high-strung cableways, intrusive canyon overflights, corporate greed, clashing government missions, and other incredible assaults on the Grand Canyon. “Guarding the Treasure fulfills the promise of protecting the glory of the Grand Canyon for future generations, through a masterfully woven tale of natural wonder and human history. A must read.” —Dr. Gary Fogel, Author and Adjunct Professor at San Diego State University.

Book excerpt: Deputy U.S. Marshal Lee Sowell and his posse chase bootleggers, killers, and robbers across Indian Territory in the 1880s. Sometimes their methods are a little shady, if not downright illegal, but they get their man. In far western I.T., they avoid massacre by Comanche Indians by fighting fire with fire(water). Two of Lee's posse go out on their own to capture bootleggers and their whiskey still, deep in the Unassigned Lands. Bass Reeves, Lee's mentor, is accused of murder and it is left up to Lee to find and bring in the witnesses that would save Bass from conviction. In the process, Lee is shot and his life saved by a woman with an old Kentucky long rifle. Later, they corner a killer at Robbers' Roost.

This is the book that can tell you how to spell, pronounce, and define over 5,000 terms relative to the American West. Want to know what a “breachy” cow is? Describes some teenagers we know… Spend hours perusing the dictionary at random, or read straight through to give you a flavor of the West from its beginnings to contemporary days. Laced with photographs and maps, the Dictionary of the American West will make you sound like an expert on all things Western, even if you don’t know your dingus from a dinner plate. Compiled of words brought into English from Native Americans, emigrants, Mormons, Hispanics, migrant workers, loggers, and fur trappers, the dictionary opens up history and culture in an enchanting way. From “Aarigaa!” to “zopilote,” the Dictionary of the American West is a “valuable book, a treasure for any literate American’s library.” (Tony Hillerman)
