Book excerpt: Like Rembrandt's great engravings in the 17th century, Picasso produced some of the most powerful engraving work of the 20th century thanks to his expressive and inventive richness. The Suite Vollard is a central part of his engraving output. Made up of a hundred engravings, it symbolizes the quintessence of printmaking techniques. This daring series, created in the 1930s for the Parisian art dealer Ambroise Vollard, made engraving an art form in its own right, on a par with painting, during the period preceding the iconic painting Guernica and the subsequent development of the themes of the artist's personal mythology. Vollard's premature death in 1939 left a question mark over his intentions for the work that he commissioned Picasso to produce. This Suite Vollard, which is preserved in the collections of the National Picasso Museum in Paris, comes from the print proofs signed by Picasso, printed from 1937 onward by the master printer Roger Lacourière. The whole set is now on display for the first time. Only a small circle of international museums (the National Picasso Museum in Paris, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the MoMA in New York, and the British Museum in London) preserve it in its entirety.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Picasso may have the most uncanny line since Botticelli. Each medium or style he chose to master, no matter how solid or sculptural, can be seen as line disguised, metamorphic; as the labyrinth to which a single thread is the key. Theoretically, line is infinite; Picasso in his fertility nearly realized that theory in almost a century of ceaseless drawing, whether on paper, zinc, stone, or other media. Here is a sampling, rather than a comprehensive selection, from that plenitude; while nothing could be comprehensive within a single volume, the genius of Picasso's line manifests itself so clearly that this culling from various periods reveals the line in most of its guises. Beginning with a 1905 circus family in drypoint, 44 drawings cover Picasso's major themes, techniques, and styles. From the almost classic Ingresque clarity of the Diaghilev and Stravinsky portraits (1919, 1920) via cubist studies and "neo-classical" nudes, Picasso's restless hand remakes his world again and again with fresh energy, culminating here in six sketches of the artist/model dashed out in raging love/hate in the midst of personal crisis (1953–54). In between are times of serenity and introspection (Seven Dancers (1919), with the future Olga Picasso up front; many figures and bathers) and, particularity as book illustrations, many mythological studies; Eurydice Stung by a Serpent (1930 etching), Dying Minotaur in the Arena (1933), an etching for a 1934 edition of Lysistrata. Balzac is represented by a striking lithographic portrait (1952) and by etching for Vollard's edition of Le Chef-d'oeuvre inconnu. The sudden appearance of an earthy, hirsute Rembrandt (1934) seems to confirm Picasso's membership in the select group of art history's greatest draughtsmen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pablo Picasso was the most innovative graphic artist of this century. With his highly original printmaking techniques and unorthodox, nonlinear approach to style, he produced a body of work in this medium that has never been equaled. Picasso: Inside the Image focuses entirely on the graphic work, with examples from the outstanding collection of prints belonging to the German art historian Dr. Peter Ludwig. Etchings, lithographs, linocuts, engravings and aquatints from all periods of Picasso's career are illustrated in the finest detail. Many of them represent key documents in twentieth-century art: The Frugal Repast, the cubist Nude in an Armchair, Vollard Suite, and Minotauromachy among others - true masterpieces that demonstrate Picasso's imaginative and technical genius. Complementing this selection are full-color illustrations showing five rarely seen print plates.

Annotation Supplied by Informazioni Editoriali

Book excerpt: Beginning in the 1950s, Pablo Picasso concerned himself intensely with the linocut, creating a veritable cosmos of bullfighting scenes, mythological images, and abstract portraits. Neglected for many years, this traditional printmaking technique--which effectively combined his talent as a draftsman with his expressive use of color--was consequently to experience a renaissance. On par with his paintings in their coloristic effects, Picasso's linocuts convey both the mature tone of the late Picasso and the almost youthful buoyancy of an artist of over seventy years who once more found himself the eager apprentice of a new technique. And with his experimental approach to the new medium--as shown by countless artist's and trial proofs, many of which are included here--Picasso helped to establish the linocut in the modern-day art world as a professional printmaking technique. In addition to exploring Picasso's unconventional handling of the linocut, this volume--created to accompany an exhibition this year at the Kunstmuseum Pablo Picasso in Munster--also recounts the history of the linocut and the biographical circumstances under which Picasso created his works. Included in this lavish volume are more than one hundred illustrations of the vibrant prints Picasso created between 1954 and 1968. Many are among the artist's most defining work and demonstrate his lifelong ability to engage with virtually any medium and to make it his own.

Book excerpt: Sheds new light on Picasso’s oeuvre and provides striking confirmation of his belief in art as a venue for the uninhibited expression of human desires. When Japanese ukiyo-e woodcut prints arrived in the European art world of the late nineteenth century, they caused a sensation and influenced artists as diverse as van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Rodin. Picasso first encountered their bold stylization and expressive flair as a young artist in Barcelona, but his connection with Japanese art has been comparatively neglected by critical studies until now. Although Picasso expressed an ambivalent attitude to the Japonisme movement, it has recently been discovered that he personally owned more than sixty of the highly erotic prints known as shunga. Now a selection of these rare works from his private collection has been brought together by the Museu Picasso in Barcelona and is shown here for the first time along with Picasso’s own prints and drawings. This juxtaposition reveals a series of fascinating parallels and convergences in terms of both subject matter and composition. The stylistic echoes are most visible in Picasso’s erotic drawings of the first decade of the twentieth century, and in a series of witty and explicit prints made toward the end of his life, which share the frank yet playful attitude to sexual relationships that shines through in the best Japanese works of this genre. Lavishly illustrated with images b y both Japanese printmakers and the Western artists who followed in their stead, the book features essays by Hayakawa Monta, Ricard Bru, Malén Gual, and Diana Widmaier Picasso.

Book excerpt: The 100 superb etchings made by Picasso between 1930 and 1937 for the great art critic and dealer Ambroise Vollard, who commissioned and published them, have long been recognized as one of the supreme productions of the master's hand. Arising from Picasso's artistic caprice, from his working experience, or from the very depths of his unconscious, these plates show, more than any of his other works, a man at once inspired by and prey to his dazzling imagination and the demands of his inner demon. 100 illustrations.
