Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Artist at the Piano In this collection of short essays on the art of musical interpretation at the pianoforte, an effort is made to evoke the spirit of the "higher criticism" which has done so much good in other fields. It is pitiable to contemplate the musical enthusiasms which are sacrificed on the arid wastes of matter-of-fact pedagogy. Students (especially child-students) gifted with musical imaginations and impulses, when confronted with the arithmetic tables of theoretic facts relating to the written statement of music, and the iron rules of "systems" and "methods," are as naturally stupid as they are talented in the Art-dimension. From the commencement (and more especially at the commencement) they should be trained to see with the mind as well as the eye, else the measure of their progress may prove, by inverse ratio, the measure of retrogression on the Art-plane. Another danger awaits the would-be artist at the pianoforte; he may be tempted to regard the very restricted possibilities of a mechanical instrument as the limit of his natural musical expression. There is an utterly mistaken idea abroad to-day in regard to the relationship which should exist between the pianist and his instrument. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Music Study in Germany IN preparing for the public letters which were written only for home, I have hoped that some readers would find in them the charm of style which the writer's friends fancy them to possess; that others would think the description of her masters amid their pupils, and especially Liszt, worth preserving; while piano students would be grateful for the information that an analysis of the piano technique has been made, such as very greatly to diminish the difficulties of the instrument. How much of Herr Deppe's piano method is original with himself, pianists must decide. That he has at least made an invaluable re'sume' of all or most of their secrets, my sister believes no student of the instrument who fairly and conscientiously examines into the matter will deny. Book excerpt: Charles Rosen is one of the world's most talented pianists -- and one of music's most astute commentators. Known as a performer of Bach, Beethoven, Stravinsky, and Elliott Carter, he has also written highly acclaimed criticism for sophisticated students and professionals. In Piano Notes, he writes for a broader audience about an old friend -- the piano itself. Drawing upon a lifetime of wisdom and the accumulated lore of many great performers of the past, Rosen shows why the instrument demands such a stark combination of mental and physical prowess. Readers will gather many little-known insights -- from how pianists vary their posture, to how splicings and microphone placements can ruin recordings, to how the history of composition was dominated by the piano for two centuries. Stories of many great musicians abound. Rosen reveals Nadia Boulanger's favorite way to avoid commenting on the performances of her friends ("You know what I think," spoken with utmost earnestness), why Glenn Gould's recordings suffer from "double-strike" touches, and how even Vladimir Horowitz became enamored of splicing multiple performances into a single recording. Rosen's explanation of the piano's physical pleasures, demands, and discontents will delight and instruct anyone who has ever sat at a keyboard, as well as everyone who loves to listen to the instrument. In the end, he strikes a contemplative note. Western music was built around the piano from the classical era until recently, and for a good part of that time the instrument was an essential acquisition for every middle-class household. Music making was part of the fabric of social life. Yet those days have ended. Fewer people learn the instrument today. The rise of recorded music has homogenized performance styles and greatly reduced the frequency of public concerts. Music will undoubtedly survive, but will the supremely physical experience of playing the piano ever be the same?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Piano-Forte Class Book: Containing Practical, Rudimental Lessons for Students of Music, and Especially Calculated to Be of Service to Those Who Are Preparing to Teach In the matter of musical knowledge, this book claims to impart nothing new, - to say nothing which has not been said before by some one, at some time; that, at the present day, would indeed, be a difficult matter. Neither is this work intended to take the place of a Piano Instruction Book, nor to supply the place of a teacher. No book can do that. The author has simply gathered together and arranged, in systematic form, those first principles of the Theory and Technique of music which are absolutely necessary to the intelligent progress of a pupil through his first few years of study, and endeavored to set this knowledge before him in a manner which, by its simplicity, will attract and, perhaps, lead him on to an interest in the deeper study of Harmony, and, event ually, to a thorough Musical Education. The greater portion of the work has been used in manuscript by the author for ten years but, from constant additions, it has become so troublesome for classes to copy, and the demand for it has grown so great among those of the writer's pupils who are teaching, as to make its publication a necessity. Teachers who use this work in schools must have blackboards with staffs upon them, and they should hold their recitations either weekly or semi-weekly. Teachers of village classes can usually obtain the use of some school room, or can have a blackboard in their lesson room, and meet their classes weekly. Very small classes can meet in any room, with music paper or music slates, upon which to write the exercises. Classes of very young children may commence at chapter second, and omit, until they are older, the chapters on the Metronome and Movements, and small por tions of other chapters, according to the judgment of the teacher. Book excerpt: Regulation and Repair of Piano and Player Mechanism - Together with Tuning as Science and Art is a work authored by expert William Brad White. Player pianos, sometimes referred to as autopianos, were gaining in popularity in the early 1900s, necessitating a book about their servicing. Regulation and Repair of Piano and Player Mechanism is a resource guide for individuals tasked with repairing these large and rather complex instruments. The work focuses specifically on the pneumatic player, which was the standard player piano at the time. The book itself is rather brief and is divided into two sections. The first section deals with the regulation and repair of the piano, focusing on technical aspects the serviceman must be familiar with. Part two details tuning, and is intended not only for the serviceman but also the technically minded owner of a player piano. William Braid White's title is an effective overview of the regulation and repair of a player piano. While player pianos are scarce today, those that are in use certainly require upkeep, and thus this book will remain of interest to individuals tasked with working on these challenging instruments. This work will also appeal to readers interested in music history, as White captures a time when the appeal of automated instruments was perhaps at its greatest peak. Regulation and Repair of Piano and Player Mechanism - Together with Tuning as Science and Art is a detailed guide to servicing a once popular musical instrument. While the prevalence of player pianos has declined greatly since the beginning of the twentieth century, there remains a need for literature on the topic. If the subject matter of this text is of interest to you, White's book is a worthwhile read. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Rote songs, voice drills, piano accompaniments and all explanatory matter pertaining to teaching obviously belong to a teacher's book. The pupil's book is thus left not only free from matter confusing to him, but also with much more space available for his benefit. Adequacy of material for both teacher and pupil is thus secured to the greatest degree. The requirements deduced from the discussion Vocal Music in the Elementary Schools, pp. Vii to xiii, form the basis of the New Educational Music Course. In the present volume, pp. I to 58 contain rote songs and voice drills; pp. 62 to 215, all material of the First Music Reader, together with suggestions to teachers, pp. 217 to 262, an Appendix, - a collection of songs from the great composers, arranged and adapted for children. All one-part songs throughout the book have piano accompaniments. Credit is due Mr. W. C. Hoff, Director of Music in the public schools of Yonkers, New York, for the' material incorporated in the discussion of the child-voice and its development. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Music and Musicians There are many who will be inclined to deny that programme music has a history at all, or at any rate one worth writing, but as a matter of fact the idea that music is capable Of any but an abstract use is far Older than is generally supposed. Nearly four hundred years ago, at a time when music, from our point of view, was barely articulate, Sir Thomas More wrote Of his Utopians: For all their music, both that they play upon instruments and that they sing with man's voice, doth so resemble and express natural affections, the sound and tune is so applied and made agreeable to the thing, that whether it be a prayer or else a ditty of gladness, of patience, of trouble, Of mourning or Of anger, the fashion Of the melody doth so represent the meaning Of the thing, that it doth wonderfully move, stir, pierce and inflame the hearers' minds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steps for the Young Pianist Sixth Steps for the Young Pianist is offered to the public with the hope that both teacher and pupil will find in it a collection of lovely little classics which will be a profitable continuation of the course of study outlined and developed in First Steps for the Young Pianist, Second Steps for the Young Pianist, Third Steps for the Young Pianist, Fourth Steps for the Young Pianist, and Fifth Steps for the Young Pianist; or useful and interesting as supplementary music to be studied during the completion of the Lessons contained in the first five Steps. The manner in which the music in Sixth Steps is presented is slightly different from that in which the Lessons in the first five Steps are presented. In the preceding Steps, lesson outlines have been arranged and followed, making possible a gradual and well-balanced develop ment, at the same time, of technic, and the understanding and interpretation of music. In Sixth Steps, however, each chapter or Lesson is given over to one special type or attribute of piano playing, such as the use of legato or staccato touch, rhythmic playing, or the playing of octaves and chords. In some instances, helpful technical preparation has been suggested. It has been the purpose of the writer, in these books - and in other material especially pre pared for the purpose of supplementing and providing for the special needs of each pupil - to develop logically, and in a well-balanced manner, the pupil's capacity and ability to read music as readily as he would read a story or article written in a language with which he is familiar; to lay solid foundations in matters of tone-shading, phrasing, and pedaling; to develop equal facility in the use of all Major keys and Minor keys; to bring the pupil, through the Historical Anecdotes, into a closer intimacy with the lives of great musicians; and, withal, to inspire him to desire, in his playing, not only mechanical accuracy, but also an expressive and artistic interpretation.
