Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hysteria is a disease already forgotten by medicine, which, in spite of this, is still very much in vogue. Its name in various academic circles and, especially, in psychoanalytic circles. However, what is today referred to as hysteria is not hysteria, and what is hysteria does not have that name. This book aims to show the form that hysteria actually took before its disappearance in the twentieth century. It aims to answer a simple question. It aims to answer a simple question: What did what was called hysteria for so many centuries look like? What characteristics did it have that identified it from other ailments? How was it dealt with? What was the cause of it? To answer these and other questions, this book makes a historical journey from the first ideas about hysteria, from the first centuries of medicine to the latest conception of it settled in the famous manual of mental disorders, the DSM. This journey is made with emphasis on the second half of the 19th century, the golden age for hysteria and the intellectual environment from which Sigmund Freud and, therefore, his creation, Psychoanalysis, drew nourishment. As happens with any look into the past, many myths become evident as such and, at the same time, are dissolved by looking at the historical facts that involve them. For example, one can see how the idea that hysterical patients were despised by physicians as simulators is false. Or, it can be seen that Freud was never the first to listen to these supposed patients ignored by physicians or that he was not the first or the only one to consider sexuality to explain hysteria. These and many other myths, such as that patients were treated by provoking them to orgasm, are easily debunked in this book. This book is obviously addressed to anyone interested in knowing, with accuracy and detail, what hysteria consisted of, as well as to those interested in seeing the reality behind the mythical foundations of Psychoanalysis, since it was born out of hysteria and to which it dedicated its existence. In short, this book is a modern treatise on hysteria, intended to answer a simple answer to a simple but complex question: What the heck is hysteria?

Book excerpt: Winner of the Herbert Feis Prize from the American Historical Association Winner of the AFGAGMAS Biennial Book AwardWinner of the Science Award from the American Foundation for Gender and Genital Medicine From the time of Hippocrates until the 1920s, massaging female patients to orgasm was a staple of medical practice among Western physicians in the treatment of "hysteria," an ailment once considered both common and chronic in women. Doctors loathed this time-consuming procedure and for centuries relied on midwives. Later, they substituted the efficiency of mechanical devices, including the electric vibrator, invented in the 1880s. In The Technology of Orgasm, Rachel Maines offers readers a stimulating, surprising, and often humorous account of hysteria and its treatment throughout the ages, focusing on the development, use, and fall into disrepute of the vibrator as a legitimate medical device.

Book excerpt: 2019 Choice Outstanding Academic Title In Lost, medical historian Shannon Withycombe weaves together women’s personal writings and doctors’ publications from the 1820s through the 1910s to investigate the transformative changes in how Americans conceptualized pregnancy, understood miscarriage, and interpreted fetal tissue over the course of the nineteenth century. Withycombe’s pathbreaking research reveals how Americans construed, and continue to understand, miscarriage within a context of reproductive desires, expectations, and abilities. This is the first book to utilize women’s own writings about miscarriage to explore the individual understandings of pregnancy loss and the multiple social and medical forces that helped to shape those perceptions. What emerges from Withycombe’s work is unlike most medicalization narratives.

Book excerpt: Outstanding feminist scholars present seldom discussed women’s views of sexuality. In the past, there has been little feminist discussion among sexuality professionals and between feminist therapists and sex therapists. The valuable ideas expressed by the contributors to this book are aimed at increasing the possibilities for all therapists and counselors to discuss with their clients the nature of sexuality, and in particular, what women feel about sex. Professionals provide remarkable perspectives on issues that concern all women--orgasm, the double standard, new reproductive options, intimacy, bisexuality, and more.

Book excerpt: Lydia Pinkham was one of the 19th century’s most remarkable businesswomen, her influence spreading beyond the late 1800s and her native New England. A champion of equal rights for women and blacks at a time when such causes lacked widespread support, Pinkham was ahead of her time on other issues. Chief among them was the well-being of women struggling with serious health issues related to their menstrual cycles and other so-called “women weaknesses.” But as the teetotaling Pinkham and her namesake company soared to entrepreneurial heights by selling her patient relief in the guise of an alcohol-laced potion known as the Vegetable Compound, generations that followed have been left to wonder: Was she worthy of her female customers’ trust or just an opportunist? In Lydia Pinkham: The Face That Launched a Thousand Ads, historian Sammy R. Danna offers the latest book-length biography that explores all sides of the Lydia Pinkham phenomena. Danna illustrates how remarkable an American historical figure she was, who with associates masterfully used and reinvented the marketing tools of her day, while battling the misogyny of the medical establishment. But Danna also asks whether she was just a grandmotherly version of the pitchmen who roamed from town to town with their snake oil elixirs. Students and scholars in the fields of women’s studies, American culture, and the histories of medicine, advertising, and business will see Lydia Pinkham in a new light.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers dermatological and related esthetic concerns specific to female patients. Since knowing what’s normal is as important as knowing what’s not, first chapters covers physiological differences in the skin of women and the changes during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Certain commonly encountered dermatoses are more frequent in females – chronic telogen effluvium, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, pigmented contact (cosmetic) dermatitis, etc., which are explained in a more focused manner. Dermatoses exclusive to females involving the vulva is discussed at length. These include common papulosquamous conditions such as psoriasis, lichen planus, and lichen sclerosus as well as the uncommon but challenging plasma cell vulvitis. Breast dermatoses also are predominantly encountered in women and are described in detail in this book. Importantly, the safety of drugs and biologics in pregnancy and lactation have been covered too. One section is dedicated to the emotional and psychological burden of skin disease in women and certain disorders requiring psychiatric intervention such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (trichotillomania, trichotemnomania) and body dysmorphic disorder. Furthermore, commonly used cosmeceuticals and frequently performed esthetic procedures such as chemical peels, botulinum toxin, and soft tissue augmentation (fillers) are well explained. Skin diseases in females can cause a significant emotional and psychological impact that can sometimes be more serious than the physical impact. There is a paucity of comprehensive published literature in both journal and books and this book aims to fill that gap. This book is meant as a resource for dermatology residents and trainees, practitioners, and teachers.
