Book excerpt: In spite of the commonly held opinion according to which Galen's authority was gradually superseded by Vesalius and his followers, a close look at the influence that Galen's psychological works exerted on physicians and philosophers of the early modern period reveals quite a different picture. Not only were Galenists often keen to embrace the new anatomical discoveries, eventually they even contributed to shaping a series of new analytical, practical and experimental tools that started an in-depth transformation of the traditional rationale, with far-reaching and unexpected consequences in domains such as theory of matter, philosophical anthropology and medical experimentation. Through the lens provided by mental disease and its connection to the soul, a new concept of the body and the human animal ultimately emerges: a concept that accompanies the development of early modern ideas on subjectivity and the self.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology of the Soul and Instinct, as Distinguished From Materialism: With Supplementary Demonstrations of the Divine Communication of the Narratives of Creation and the Flood Such a conviction, arising from demonstrative proof, which appeals to the senses as well as the understanding, it appears to the writer, has been wanted by the human family, however they may be disposed, in the main, to accede to Revelation, or to listen to the natural suggestions of Reason. If the writer has failed, he will enjoy the consciousness of knowing that he will have done no harm to morals or religion, and that the worst of the issue will be the trouble that may devolve upon others in restoring the subject to its former obscurities and consequent tendencies." The second edition of the work on the Soul and Instinct, consisting of a small duodecimo, from the Preface to which the foregoing remarks are derived, has been before the public since 1849; and as the Author is not aware of any adverse criticisms, he offers this octavo edition in the belief that it will be found even more unexceptionable than the former. The facts and illustrations are greatly amplified, and the Author has aimed, so far as the subjects will admit, at a simplification that may adapt the work to the common understanding. He has also introduced a variety of topics which have appeared in some of his other works that have only an indirect, but, nevertheless, an important bearing upon the question relative to the Soul as distinguished from Materialism. Among the principal of these is the new doctrine of the "Correlation or Equivalence of the Physical and Vital Forces." If a principle of life be denied, in accounting for the endless and unique phenomena which appertain to the functions of organic beings, it is sufficiently apparent, independently of the avowed doctrines of materialism, that the phenomena of mind, from their connection with the same organization through which the functions of life are conducted, may be plausibly referred to the same physical causation. This doctrine of "Correlation of Forces" has therefore been made the basis of the "new materialism". hence it becomes necessary to expose its fallacies. Yet, long before recent scientific research uncovered this natural linkage, it was described in Kabbalistic healing manuals, with one important difference--there it was understood to be a link between body, mind, and soul.Whether you rely on today's holistic healing or on more traditional medicine, you'll benefit from the Kabbalistic prescriptions for healing and understanding of human physiology laid out in this valuable book.Body, Mind, Soul: Kabbalah and Medicine includes: - A reference guide to the body-soul interaction- A detailed description of Kabbalah's understanding of disease and its root causes- Contemporary healing methods seen from a mystical point of view- A discussion of the healing power of prayer and teshuvah (return to G-d)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would Christianity be like without the soul? While most people would expect the Christian bible to reveal a highly traditional opposition of matter and spirit, the spirit forces of the Old and New Testaments are often surprisingly physical, dynamic, and practical, a matter of energy as much as ethics. The Secret History of the Soul examines the forgotten or suppressed models of body, soul, and human consciousness found in the literature, philosophy and scripture of the ancient and classical worlds. It shows how the spirit forces of Homer, Plato, Aristotle, and the Old and New Testaments tended to be quantities not entities, and to be closely bound up with the dynamic physical flux of the human body, rather than cleanly abstracted in some absolute immaterial realm. Forces such as menos and thymos, nephesh, pneuma and dynamis not only blurred the line between body and soul, but were potent and transferable, being used, in New Testament culture, to effect magical cures or bestow magical power. Related to this surprising lack of body-soul dualism is a lack of dualistic afterlife in either Homer or Hebrew scripture, where Hades and Sheol are the sole post-mortem destinations. The Secret History of the Soul restores the living strangeness of a spirit world filled with potent energy and practical magic, in cultures which had not yet glimpsed the abstracted soul of later Christianity.
