Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology and National Needs This little volume is the outcome of a course of public lectures at King's College which I organised this spring under the auspices of the Imperial Studies Committee of the University of London. The neglect of Science in political and similar circles has never been so disastrous for us as in the earlier years of the recent war; our success later on was largely due to the fact that our brave fighting forces were supported at home by the organisation of our scientific resources. Physiology played its part in this great endeavour, and the present book tells some of the story. To include all the many ways in which Physiology is of national importance would have occupied a much larger book: the six articles presented here give samples only, but I trust that those selected will be sufficient to convince the educated public that it is not only in war-time, but in the days of reconstruction and peace that Physiology plays or should play an important part in our national life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology and Health The new facts that have been established in connection with foods have changed many features of that important subject. Even the relation of bones and muscles presents a new emphasis to be placed upon certain topics, especially such as relate to properly shaped feet and the results of muscle degeneration. The recognition of neurons as the units of the nervous system and nervous action, and the con ception of the brain and spinal cord as a complex of inter related neurons, have vastly illuminated the study of the nervous system even for younger children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Human Physiology To set fixed limits to the subject matter of physiology is a very difficult task, because, properly conceived, large portions of the entire group of medical and biological sciences belong to its province. A text-book designed primarily for medical students can, however, regard the field as somewhat more restricted; for the prospective physician has abundant opportunity to amplify his knowledge of the bodily functions from his other studies. Hence in this book I have followed the usual custom and have brought together only so much of our information respecting the human body as can be described as pertaining to its normal functions. The discoveries made in the realms of practical medicine, of experimental pathology and of pharmacology, which in many respects are so full of significance for the processes of the body, are, therefore, for the most part passed by. In like manner the facts of comparative physiology have been alluded to only in exceptional cases, since an exhaustive discussion of them would have increased the size of the book to a not inconsiderable extent. For the same reason I have been unable to find a place for the short histological discussion customary in text-books. I do not regard this as an error, for a necessarily brief and superficial resume of the most important histological facts could be of no great service, since the student needs a more extensive knowledge of the finer structure of the body and must in any case obtain this from the text-books devoted especially to that subject. I do not therefore at all mistake the great importance of histology for physiology; on the contrary, I would recommend that in the, study of a text-book of this science a text-book of histology (and one of anatomy) be always at hand in order to combine the physiological facts with the histological and anatomical facts. Physiological chemistry also has developed so far that more and more it can claim the right to be regarded as an independent science. On the other hand it is not possible to present the physiological facts without reference to the chemical processes of the body. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Human Physiology: For Medical Students Between the Physiology of Man and that of the Domestic Animals there is no fundamental difference, and most of our knowledge of human physiology has been acquired from experiments upon the lower animals. But while the tissues of a man, a dog, and a horse act much in the same manner, the mode of nutrition of these tissues is somewhat different, and requires special attention in the case of each. In this volume the attempt is made to give the essentials of general physiology and of the special physiology of the domestic animals in a form suitable to the requirements of Students and Practitioners of Veterinary Medicine. The book is not intended to take the place of the demonstrations and practical work from which alone physiology can be properly learned, but merely to supplement these and to focus the information derived from them. The student must take every opportunity of acquiring a really practical knowledge, and, to facilitate the more direct association of the practical and systematic study of physiology, throughout these pages references are made to descriptions of the experimental and chemical work which the student should try to do for himself or have demonstrated to him. The histological structure of the tissues and organs which is now studied practically in every school is here described only in so far as it is essential for the proper understanding of their physiology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology: The Basis of Sanitary and Social Science I have written this book to show that the Law of Life for man is written in his organisation that we have but to study the physical nature of man to know the conditions of health, the causes of disease, the means of preventing diseases, and the best methods of cure; that, in the same way, we have but to understand his moral nature, his social requirements, and the constitution of his mind, in order that we may know the moral, social, and educational conditions most conducive to his wel fare and happiness. That is, I have endeavoured to prove the proposition laid down in 'my title - that Human Physiology is the true basis of Sanitary and Social Science. But why, it may be asked, is it necessary to write a volume of nearly five hundred pages to demonstrate and illustrate a self-evident proposition? Of course, the law of every creature's life is written in its organisation. It is true of every plant, every animal, and must therefore be true 01 man. We have only to understand his whole nature to see its adaptations, and the modes of life and activity, the manners and morals, govern ment and society, education and religion, that will best suit his requirements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Physiology Physiology is the basis of medicine, and the further advance of these sciences depends mainly upon the experimental method. The medical student, the future physician, should undergo a training in practical physiology, for thereby he learns the most important of all lessons he learns to observe, to draw conclusions from his observations, and to unravel the causes of his failures. The importance of practical physiology is undoubted, but as to the nature and scope of the experimental work, which is most suitable for the medical student, there is considerable difference of opinion among teachers of physiology. In this country, perhaps, too much stress has been laid upon the physiology of muscle and nerve for the hope that a study of the properties of these tissues will unfold the enigma of life is likely ever to remain without consummation. An advance in the knowledge of the living organism as a whole, one organ reacting upon another, has been gained by experiments upon the living animal, treated as a unit and not as a collection of separate organs and tissues. Such practical physiology needs extension in the courses of instruction given to students. It should, as far as possible, have a direct relation to medicine. It emphasizes, however, the mechanism of sense-organs, neryes, and muscles as the basis of the individual's efficiency; and it is the first text-book of medical physiology to recognize the more and more insistent demands of the mental process. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology for Nurses Some years ago the author wrote an "Elementary Physiology for Teachers," the aim of which was to give prominence to those anatomical and physiological peculiarities of children with which it is important for teachers to be acquainted, but which are seldom referred to in small text-books intended for the general reader. The present volume is an adaptation of the earlier work to the needs of nurses. Various sections whose importance was chiefly educational have been omitted; paragraphs, sections, and chapters nave been added; and in parts otherwise unaltered a good many technical terms which were unnecessary in a book for teachers but which nurses are likely to hear in the course of their training have been included. Many references to the special features of childhood have. been retained, partly because children form a considerable proportion of the patients of most nurses, and partly because so many nurses are being drawn into the service of the educational authorities. Since the publication of "Physiology for Teachers," important advances have been made in our knowledge in various departments of physiology, e.g. regarding the functions of some of the ductless glands, the part played by "hormones," and cerebral localisation. Care has therefore been taken to bring the present volume up to date. At the same time it has seemed best to adhere to orthodox teaching with respect to questions still under debate.
