This book was released on 1990 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compendium summarizes published results of clinical observations and of more basic studies that help to elucidate the physiological mechanisms of adaptation of humans to prolonged bed rest. If the authors' abstract or summary was appropriate, it was included. In some cases a more detailed synopsis is provided, under the subheadings Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. This volume includes material published from 1981 through 1988.

Book Synopsis Responses of Women to Orthostatic and Exercise Stresses by :
Download or read book Responses of Women to Orthostatic and Exercise Stresses written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technical report presents the results from a special physiological study of women performed at the Johnson Space Center in 1976-77. The purpose was to establish a substantially large (98 subjects) normative data base taken from a general population of working women who might be considered representative of future women astronauts. The data sets consist of medical historical, clinical, anthropometric, and stress response determinations and measurements which would be relevant to human space flight and hence helpful in establishing appropriate medical screening criteria (types of tests and their normal values) for selecting women astronauts. The stressors chosen were lower body negative pressure and static standing (both orthostatic) and treadmill exercise (ergometric). Most methods were identical to or similar adaptations of those protocols used in testing Apollo and Skylab program crewmen. Data are provided in two formats: (1) original individual values which are amenable to cross correlations and subsequent analyses in any subsets which might be of interest and (2) statistical summaries and correlations suggested by the variables themselves and by certain questions which concern investigators of the human responses to microgravity. Of notable comment is the very great similarity of many characteristics of the women subjects of this study generated before selection of any American women astronauts and the corresponding characteristics of those women astronauts now regularly flying among Shuttle space crews.

Book Synopsis Physiological Responses to Prolonged Bed Rest and Fluid Immersion in Man by : John Edward Greenleaf
Download or read book Physiological Responses to Prolonged Bed Rest and Fluid Immersion in Man written by John Edward Greenleaf and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water immersion and prolonged bed rest reproduce nearly all the physiological responses observed in astronauts in the weightless state. Moreover, it appears that relative to actual weightlessness, given responses tend to occur sooner in immersion and later in bed rest. Much research has been conducted on humans using these two techniques, especially by Russian scientists. This compendium contains abstracts and annotations of reports that appeared in the literature from January 1974 through December 1980. Two other related compendia have been published: Adaptation to Prolonged Bed Rest in Man: A Compendium of Research, by J.E. Greenleaf, C.J. Greenleaf, D. Van Derveer, and K.J. Dorchak (NASA TM X-3307, 1976); and Physiologic Responses to Water Immersion in Man: A Compendium of Research, by J. Kollias, D. Van Derveer, K.J. Dorchak, and J.E. Greenleaf (NASA TM X-3308, 1976).

Book Synopsis Circulatory Response to the Upright Posture by : James J. Smith
Download or read book Circulatory Response to the Upright Posture written by James J. Smith and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-09-24 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only up-to-date systematic review of normal human response to upright posture and lower body negative pressure (LBNP). It analyzes the key factors that influence postural tolerance, such as physical fitness, weightlessness, age, and sex. It also provides extensive details on the circulatory changes that have occurred during U.S. and Soviet manned space flights. The text is brilliantly illustrated with diagrams, tables, and comments on circulatory methods. Readers will discover some information which has never before been published. This one-of-a-kind volume also reviews the diagnosis and treatment of orthostatic hypotension-an extremely common orthostatic disorder. Circulatory Response to the Upright Posture is the first available literature since 1982 of human physiological and pathophysiological aspects of postural tolerance. A wide variety of readers will find this title interesting and of value. Circulatory physiologists, cardiologists, and everyone with an interest in exercise physiology, aging, space physiology, and environmental physiology will especially benefit from this writing.
