Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To classify a book as 'experimental' rather than 'theoretical' or as 'pure' rather than 'applied' is liable to imply umeal distinctions. Nevertheless, some Classification is necessary to teIl the potential reader whether the book is for him. In this spirit, this book may be said to treat fluid dynamies as a branch of physics, rather than as a branch of applied mathematics or of engineering. I have often heard expressions of the need for such a book, and certainly I have feIt it in my own teaching. I have written it primariIy for students of physics and of physics-based applied science, aIthough I hope others may find it useful. The book differs from existing 'fundamental' books in placing much greater emphasis on what we know through laboratory experiments and their physical interpretation and less on the mathe matieal formalism. It differs from existing 'applied' books in that the choice of topics has been made for the insight they give into the behaviour of fluids in motion rather than for their practical importance. There are differences also from many existing books on fluid dynamics in the branches treated, reflecting to some extent shifts of interest in reeent years. In particular, geophysical and astrophysical applications have prompted important fundamental developments in topics such as conveetion, stratified flow, and the dynamics of rotating fluids. These developments have hitherto been reflected in the contents of textbooks only to a limited extent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this contributed volume showcase current theoretical approaches in the modeling of ocular fluid dynamics in health and disease. By including chapters written by experts from a variety of fields, this volume will help foster a genuinely collaborative spirit between clinical and research scientists. It vividly illustrates the advantages of clinical and experimental methods, data-driven modeling, and physically-based modeling, while also detailing the limitations of each approach. Blood, aqueous humor, vitreous humor, tear film, and cerebrospinal fluid each have a section dedicated to their anatomy and physiology, pathological conditions, imaging techniques, and mathematical modeling. Because each fluid receives a thorough analysis from experts in their respective fields, this volume stands out among the existing ophthalmology literature. Ocular Fluid Dynamics is ideal for current and future graduate students in applied mathematics and ophthalmology who wish to explore the field by investigating open questions, experimental technologies, and mathematical models. It will also be a valuable resource for researchers in mathematics, engineering, physics, computer science, chemistry, ophthalmology, and more.

Book excerpt: Part medicine, part biology, and part engineering, biomedicine and bioengineering are by their nature hybrid disciplines. To make these disciplines work, engineers need to speak "medicine," and clinicians and scientists need to speak "engineering." Building a bridge between these two worlds, Biofluid Mechanics: The Human Circulation integrates fluid and solid mechanics relationships and cardiovascular physiology. The book focuses on blood rheology, steady and unsteady flow models in the arterial circulation, and fluid mechanics through native heart valves. The authors delineate the relationship between fluid mechanics and the development of arterial diseases in the coronary, carotid, and ileo-femoral arteries. They go on to elucidate methods used to evaluate the design of circulatory implants such as artificial heart valves, stents, and vascular grafts. The book covers design requirements for the development of an ideal artificial valve, including a discussion of the currently available mechanical and bioprosthetic valves. It concludes with a detailed description of common fluid mechanical measurements used for diagnosing arterial and valvular diseases as well as research studies that examine the possible interactions between hemodynamics and arterial disease. Drawing on a wide range of material, the authors cover both theory and practical applications. The book breaks down fluid mechanics into key definitions and specific properties and then uses these pieces to construct a solid foundation for analyzing biofluid mechanics in both normal and diseased conditions.

Book excerpt: Both broad and deep in coverage, Rubenstein shows that fluid mechanics principles can be applied not only to blood circulation, but also to air flow through the lungs, joint lubrication, intraocular fluid movement and renal transport. Each section initiates discussion with governing equations, derives the state equations and then shows examples of their usage. Clinical applications, extensive worked examples, and numerous end of chapter problems clearly show the applications of fluid mechanics to biomedical engineering situations. A section on experimental techniques provides a springboard for future research efforts in the subject area. Uses language and math that is appropriate and conducive for undergraduate learning, containing many worked examples and end of chapter problems All engineering concepts and equations are developed within a biological context Covers topics in the traditional biofluids curriculum, as well as addressing other systems in the body that can be described by biofluid mechanics principles, such as air flow through the lungs, joint lubrication, intraocular fluid movement, and renal transport Clinical applications are discussed throughout the book, providing practical applications for the concepts discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Biofluid mechanics is the study of a certain class of biological problems from the viewpoint of fluid mechanics. Though biofluid mechanics does not involve any new development of the general principles of fluid mechanics, it does involve some new applications of its methods. Complex movements of fluids in the biological system demand for an analysis achievable only with professional fluid mechanics skills, and this volume aims to equip readers with the knowledge needed. This second edition is an enlarged version of the book published in 1992. While retaining the general plan of the first edition, this new edition presents an engineering analysis of the cardiovascular system relevant to the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and combines engineering principles. Included in the material of this volume are: the emerging interdisciplinary field of tissue engineering, which deals with the principles of engineering and life sciences toward the development of biological substitutes that restore, maintain and improve tissue function, and cellular and molecular bioengineering, which involves the mechanical, electrical and chemical processes of the human cell and tries to explain how cellular behaviour arises from molecular-level interactions. The added material in this edition is specifically designed for biomedical engineering professionals and students, and looks at the important applications of biofluid mechanics from an engineering perspective."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All fluid flow problems in the human body involve interaction with the vessel wall. This volume presents a number of studies where primarily mathematical modelling has been applied to a variety of medical wall-fluid interaction problems. The medical applications discussed are highly varied, while some key clinical areas are also addressed. Unusually, a number of important medical challenges involving fluid flow are considered in combination with the relevant solid mechanics. The complexity of addressing combined fluid flow and solid behaviour is viewed positively by the book’s distinguished contributors. For the researcher it offers new scope for developing and demonstrating a mastery of the scientific principles involved.
