The detailed knowledge of the aerosol optical properties is required for a comprehensive analysis of the impacts of aerosols on climate. Mie theory is often used in satellite and ground-based retrieval algorithms to account for atmospheric mineral dust. However, the approximations used in Mie theory are often not appropriate for mineral dust and can lead to errors in the optical properties modeling. Analytic models based on Rayleigh theory that account for particle shapes can offer significant advantages when used to model infrared (IR) extinction of mineral dust. Here, the IR optical properties of some components of mineral dust, authentic dust samples and minerals processed with organic acids were investigated. Detailed characterization of the particles through online and offline methods of analysis that include IR extinction spectroscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy was performed. Analysis of the IR extinction spectra and spectral simulations showed that the positions of the peaks and the shapes of the bands of the IR characteristic features are not well simulated by Mie theory in any of the samples studied. The resonance peaks were consistently shifted relative to the experimental spectrum in the Mie simulation. Rayleigh model solutions derived for different particle shapes better predicted the peak positions and band shapes of experimental spectra. To fill the gaps in the refractive index data for atmospherically relevant organic compounds in the IR region optical properties of atmospherically relevant carboxylic acids and humic-like substances using the IR extinction spectra and size distributions measured in the laboratory were determined. In addition to properties of mineral dust this dissertation focuses on properties of sea spray aerosol. Chemical and elemental composition of individual sea spray aerosol particles were studies using micro-Raman spectroscopy, mass-spectrometry and X-ray spectroscopy to provide insights into the biochemical processes that give rise to classes of organic molecules that make up these aerosol particles. The results suggested that degradation of biota (bacteria and diatoms) present in sea water led to lipopolysaccharides and extracellular polymeric substances that further degraded down to carbohydrates and fatty acids. Solubility of the resulting organic species seemed to play a role in their transfer to the aerosol phase. Furthermore, water uptake and hygroscopic growth of multi-component particles were studied. Understanding the interactions of water with atmospheric aerosols is crucial for determining their size, physical state, reactivity, and therefore for aerosol interactions with electromagnetic radiation and clouds. It was determined that particles composed of ammonium sulfate with succinic acid and of mixture of chlorides typical for marine environment show size dependent hygroscopic behavior. Microscopic analysis of the distribution of components within the aerosol particles showed that the observed size dependence is due to the differences in the mixing state. The composition and water uptake properties of sea spray aerosol particles were also measured during a phytoplankton bloom. The results showed that water uptake properties were directly related to the chemical composition of the particles and hygroscopicity decreased with increase in the fraction of water insoluble organic matter emitted during phytoplankton bloom. Finally, multiple methods of particle size, phase and shape analysis were compared and the results showed that the techniques that operate under ambient conditions provide the most relevant and robust measurement of particle size. Additionally, several storage methods for substrate deposited aerosol particles were evaluated and it was determined that storing samples at low relative humidity led to irreversible changes due to sample dehydration while sample freezing and thawing leads to irreversible changes due to phase changes and water condensation. Therefore it is suggested that samples used for single-particles analysis should be stored at ambient laboratory conditions, or near conditions which they were collected, in order to preserve the sample phase and hydration state. The results presented in this dissertation provide insight into physicochemical properties of atmospheric aerosols and help us better understand the role of aerosol particles in the Earth's atmosphere.

The radiative effects of mineral dust depend on factors including, particle size, shape, and composition which can all be extremely complex. Mineral dust particles are typically irregular in shape and can include sharp edges, voids, and fine scale surface roughness. Particle shape can also depend on the type of mineral and can vary as a function of particle size. In addition, atmospheric mineral dust is a complex mixture of different minerals as well as other, possibly organic, components that have been mixed in while these particles are suspended in the atmosphere. Aerosol optical properties are investigated in this work, including studies of the effect of particle size, shape, and composition on the infrared (IR) extinction and visible scattering properties in order to achieve more accurate modeling methods. Studies of particle shape effects on dust optical properties for single component mineral samples of silicate clay and diatomaceous earth are carried out here first. Experimental measurements are modeled using T-matrix theory in a uniform spheroid approximation. Previous efforts to simulate the measured optical properties of silicate clay, using models that assumed particle shape was independent of particle size, have achieved only limited success. However, a model which accounts for a correlation between particle size and shape for the silicate clays offers a large improvement over earlier modeling approaches. Diatomaceous earth is also studied as an example of a single component mineral dust aerosol with extreme particle shapes. A particle shape distribution, determined by fitting the experimental IR extinction data, used as a basis for modeling the visible light scattering properties.

In recent field studies organic material, such as oxalic acid and humic-like substances (HULIS), has been shown to be present in mineral dust aerosol. The presence of these internally mixed organic compounds can alter the physicochemical properties of the dust particles in the Earth's atmosphere. Thus, in this dissertation research the hygroscopic growth and CCN activity of model humic and fulvic acids and of calcite (CaCO3) particles coated with humic and fulvic acids has been measured. Furthermore, the CCN activity of calcite aerosol reacted with oxalic acid (H2C2O4) has been measured and compared to that of the humic and fulvic acids. The CCN measurements indicate that humic- or fulvic acid-coated calcite particles are significantly more CCN active than uncoated calcite particles, whereas reacted oxalate/calcite particles are not significantly more CCN active than the unreacted calcite particles, because the enhancement in CCN activity is reduced due to the reaction of calcite with oxalic acid to yield calcium oxalate. These results show that atmospheric processing of mineral dust through surface adsorption and/or heterogeneous reactions can alter hygroscopicity and CCN activity to an extent which depends on mineralogy and chemical speciation.

Additionally, aerosols represent one of the most abundant surfaces available for heterogeneous reactions. Further, as aerosols react and age in the atmosphere, their interaction with solar radiation and water uptake can change. Sea spray aerosols (SSA) constitute one of the most abundant natural aerosols in the atmosphere. Understanding how oceanic biological processes affect SSA composition and heterogeneous chemistry remains an active area of research. To study SSA heterogeneous reaction processes, fundamental laboratory studies must be able to reproduce the full chemical complexity of SSA. In this dissertation, we discuss a novel approach to studying SSA chemistry in the laboratory. This approach entails inducing phytoplankton blooms in a laboratory microcosm experiment to study the impacts of natural microbial processes on the chemical composition of seawater and SSA. From these studies, the role of heterotrophic bacteria and their associated enzymes on the chemical composition of SSA are revealed. This dissertation investigates the impact of enzymes, active in both the seawater as well as in SSA, on aerosol physicochemical properties, including nitric acid heterogeneous reactivity that is important for global nitrogen cycle. Not only can enzymes affect the physicochemical properties of SSA, but they can transform the chemistry of the atmosphere upon coagulation with pre-existing ambient particles. Further, we discovered the roles of monovalent versus divalent cations in the morphology and heterogeneous reactivity lipopolysaccharide-containing SSA. The results uncover the bacterial produced chemicals, including hydrolytic enzymes and lipopolysaccharides, in controlling SSA composition and heterogeneous reactivity in the atmosphere.

Dust particles experience heterogeneous reactions with atmospheric gases that alter the gas and particle-phase chemistry. These in turn influence the warm and cold cloud nucleation ability and optical properties of the dust particles. This dissertation investigates the atmospheric chemistry of mineral dust particles and their role in warm cloud nucleation through a combination of synergistic field measurements, laboratory experiments, and theoretical modeling. In-situ measurements made with a single-particle mass spectrometer during the ACE-Asia field campaign in 2001 provide the motivation for this work. The observed mixing state of the individual ambient particles with secondary organic and inorganic components is described in Chapter 2. A large Asian dust storm occurred during the campaign and produced dramatic changes in the aerosol's composition and mixing state. The effect of particle size and mineralogy on the atmospheric processing of individual dust particles is explored in Chapters 3 & 4. Sulfate was found to accumulate preferentially in submicron iron and aluminosilicate-rich dust particles, while nitrate and chloride were enriched in supermicron calcite-rich dust. The mineral dust (and sea salt particles) were also enriched in oxalic acid, the dominant component of water soluble organic carbon. Chapter 5 explores the roles of gas-phase photochemistry and partitioning of the diacids to the alkaline particles in producing this unique behavior. The effect of the dust's mixing state with secondary organic and inorganic components on the dust particles' solubility, hygroscopicity, and thus warm cloud nucleation properties is explored experimentally and theoretically in Chapter 6. Cloud condensation nucleation (CCN) activation curves revealed that while calcium nitrate and calcium chloride particles were very hygroscopic and CCN-active, due to the high solubility of these compounds, calcium sulfate and calcium oxalate were not. Particles composed of these two sparingly soluble compounds had apparent hygroscopicities similar to pure calcium carbonate. This implies that the commonly made assumption that all dust particles become more hygroscopic after atmospheric processing must be revisited. Calcium sulfate and oxalate represent two forms of aged mineral dust particles that remain non-hygroscopic and thus have poor CCN nucleation ability. The particle generation method (dry versus wet) was found to significantly affect the chemistry and hygroscopicity of the aerosolized particles. Finally, in Chapter 7 the timescale for the atmospheric conversion of insoluble calcite particles to soluble, CCN-active calcium nitrate particles was derived from aerosol flow tube experiments. The reaction rate is rapid was used to estimate the conversion of calcite particles to very hygroscopic particles can occur in just a few hours of exposure to tropospheric levels of nitric acid. This process will therefore be controlled by the availability of nitric acid and its precursors, as opposed to the available atmospheric reaction time.

Book excerpt: Atmospheric aerosols directly impact the Earth's climate by scattering and absorbing solar radiation and indirectly by altering the microphysical properties of clouds. Aerosols formed over the oceans, termed marine aerosols, consist of secondary marine aerosols (SMA) formed upon the oxidation of gas phase species and of primary sea spray aerosols (SSA) that are directly emitted from the surface of the ocean. The climate relevant properties of primary SSA are determined by their size and chemical composition, both of which are functions of the ocean's biological activity as well as atmospheric heterogeneous reactions with trace gas species and photochemical aging reactions. This dissertation investigates the impacts of each of these processes on the chemical complexity of SSA by conducting fundamental laboratory studies involving spectroscopic probing of various SSA systems ranging from simple, single component model systems to authentic SSA produced using an indoor ocean-atmosphere facility that replicates the chemical and biological complexity of the ocean and SSA. First, we identified the various chemical species found in SSA and linked their size and temporal changes to the biological activity of the ocean. Next, we used our improved understanding of the molecular speciation of SSA to look in-depth at the atmospheric reactions that alter the chemical and physical properties of SSA, including the heterogeneous reaction with gas phase nitric acid and OH radicals, as well as photosensitized reactions with chromophoric species. We found that the chemical complexity of SSA due to the organic and biological components alters their reactivity and introduces alternative pathways beyond those previously acknowledged. Finally, to aid in future experiments of photochemical aging reactions of SSA, we constructed and validated an LED incoherent broadband cavity enhanced absorption spectrometer (LED-IBCEAS) to detect various nitrogen oxides (e.g., NO2 and HONO). The findings presented in this dissertation improve our understanding of the various chemical and biological controls on the climate relevant properties of SSA, and can ultimately be used to improve the performance of regional and global climate models.
