Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Training in American Colleges and Universities I am greatly indebted to the venerable Dr. George C. Shattuck, of Boston, who was a pupil at Round Hill, for the following account of the physical training pursued there: Dr. Beck, the teacher of Latin, afterward the professor of Latin in Harvard Uni versity, was the teacher Of gymnastics. A large piece of ground was devoted to the purpose and furnished with all the apparatus used in the German gymnasia. The whole school was divided into classes, and each class had an hour three times a week for instruction by Dr. Beck. At the same time there were a dozen riding horses and classes for riding three times a week. Gardens were assigned the boys, in which they raised plants and vegetables. A piece of land was set apart for building huts. Base ball, hockey, and foot-ball were the games. I remember playing in a match game at the time of the Presidential election in which Adams and Jackson were candidates. The Jackson boys beat. You notice how much was done for physical training. I remember Mr. Edward Everett speaking at an annual exhibition and telling us how much better a school, how much greater advantages we enjoyed than Mr. Cogswell and himself had at Exeter. Though the school had only an existence of twenty years or less, and failed from want of pecuniary support, I believe that its in uence has survived, and a great stimulus was given by it to the cause Of education. Develop ing the bodily powers and strengthening the constitution were there first recognized as of great importance in the education of boys. The boys were very healthy. I only recall one death, from typhoid fever. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Training Treated From American and European Points of View The Sun has done me the compliment to ask for some account of my journeying and studies during my stay in Europe, from the middle of May, 1888, until the end of August, 1889. But it seems to me that I can better serve the cause of physical training, in which the public is beginning to take a livelier and more intelligent interest than hitherto, by foregoing any attempt to give an itinerary or description of my travels and observations, however interesting and instructive they were to myself, and by attempting to set forth, in as impersonal a way as possible, some of the conclusions at which I have arrived as the result of my personal study of gymnasia, play-grounds, public and military schools, and orthopaedic institutes in America, as well as in England, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, and Sweden, and to note some of the problems with regard to physical training which are occupying or seem likely soon to occupy the attention of educators in Baltimore, as well as in other parts of the country. As I shall not cumber what I have to say with references to authorities, or with my reasons for what may appear to be unsupported and arbitrary opinions, it seems proper for me to state that, before I was enabled to devote some months to the study of athletics and gymnastics in England d(iermanv. in i8Sr, I had had occasion to visit all the P.E. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers of Modern Physical Training The first edition of pioneers OF modern physical training was merely a reprint in book form of a series of biographical Sketches which appeared in Phy sical Training from month to month between January of 1909 and June of 1910. They were begun with no thought of completeness, and with the idea of furnishing a full - page portrait faced by a page of text. After two instalments had been prepared it was decided to lengthen the remaining articles in order to allow a more adequate treatment. Certain persons whom I desired very much to include in the list were omitted at the time owing to lack of available portraits or the necessary biographi cal data, or because the historical background involved had not yet been sufficiently studied. None of these reasons exists any longer, and I have therefore added the names of Amoros, H jalinar Ling, Brosius, and Betz. Other Sketches have been expanded to make the significance of the subject more apparent and to secure a better balance of parts. The Introduction and Ap pendix are taken from an article published in Physical Training for January and February of 1912 and in the American Physical Education Review for March and April of the same year. It is hoped that in its present form the book may serve as an introduction to the his tory of physical education, and commend itself to teach ers of that subject who desire a manual for use in nor mal schools, leaders' classes, and summer schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Culture in Amherst College The second question was, in order to make these exercises successful and permanent, we must give them character. It was understood that, previously, gymnasiums, manual labor schools, and attempts at physical education generally had failed but there were good reasons for it. One was, the manner in which they had been carried on, was not adapted to develop and train the whole body in accordance with physiological laws. Another reason was, that not sufficient importance had been attached to this kind of education, by trustees and managers of institutions, by teachers, by the press and public opinion generally. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter Camp's 1921 Training for Sports was intended to be a guide for physical education teachers, coaches, and athletes on how best to prepare their bodies for physical activity. In this sense, it may be best viewed as a guidebook rather than a step by step instruction manual. The book is divided into chapters, which focus on general physical conditioning, mental conditioning, the importance of sleep and diet, as well as specific chapters on the popular sports of the day, such as football, baseball, and track and field. It goes without saying that exercise science has progressed immensely in the nearly one hundred years that have passed since the original publication of Training for Sports. Noserious coach, trainer, or physical educator would be advised to use this book as a reference today. Techniques for both general physical conditioning and sport specific movements have evolved significantly since 1921. Today's game of football is vastly different than that of 1921. The value of Camp's book is thus the historical snapshot it provides. In 1921, training for sports was as much a preparation for a potential war effort than it was for leisure. Camp acknowledges as much in the section on general physical conditioning, stating, "The word training essentially implies a preparation; whether it be for severe physical effort as any athletic competition or military service in time of war, or merely for the ordinary conduct of life." It is clear however that Camp was an expert on the subject matter at the time of writing, and surely would be today were he still alive. He demonstrates remarkable understanding of practices that would come to be known as periodization and specialization, and discourages trainers from promoting a single-sport approach too early in a young athlete's life. Many coaches today would be wise to heed his advice. Training for Sports is recommended for anybody curious about the history of physical conditioning, particularly in the period of this book's initial publication.
