Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is basic to terrestrial life, and its distribution has controlled the growth and spread of human civilization. The importance of water to modern industrial processes, urban planning, and agricultural development is hard to overestimate. With these compelling motivations, it is natural that more tech nical and scientific study should have been devoted to this one substance than to any other. Research on water and its solutions has exhibited a marked expansion during the last decade. In sig nificant degree, this has resulted from the availability of new experimental tools and techniques, and of dramatic advances in computing science. This combination, in skilled hands, promises eventually to explain the unusual properties of water and aqueous solutions in unequivocal molecular terms. like wise, one now has reasonable hope that the active role that water plays in biochemical processes will be revealed and explained quantitatively at the molecular level. Owing to the widespread scholarly interest in aqueous science, it is clear that guides to the overwhelm ing literature on the subject are valuable. They serve ideally to indicate what is known and what is not, which areas harbor controversies, and what types of research attacks seem most fruitful (in answering more questions than they raise!). Whatever time and resources need to be spent in preparing compre hensive bibliographies should be quickly offset in the total scientific community by the efficiencies generated.

Book excerpt: Diluted bitumen has been transported by pipeline in the United States for more than 40 years, with the amount increasing recently as a result of improved extraction technologies and resulting increases in production and exportation of Canadian diluted bitumen. The increased importation of Canadian diluted bitumen to the United States has strained the existing pipeline capacity and contributed to the expansion of pipeline mileage over the past 5 years. Although rising North American crude oil production has resulted in greater transport of crude oil by rail or tanker, oil pipelines continue to deliver the vast majority of crude oil supplies to U.S. refineries. Spills of Diluted Bitumen from Pipelines examines the current state of knowledge and identifies the relevant properties and characteristics of the transport, fate, and effects of diluted bitumen and commonly transported crude oils when spilled in the environment. This report assesses whether the differences between properties of diluted bitumen and those of other commonly transported crude oils warrant modifications to the regulations governing spill response plans and cleanup. Given the nature of pipeline operations, response planning, and the oil industry, the recommendations outlined in this study are broadly applicable to other modes of transportation as well.

Book excerpt: Deuterium: Discovery and Applications in Organic Chemistry provides a well-illustrated overview of the discovery of 2H or heavy hydrogen, the stable hydrogen isotope with both a proton and a neutron in its nucleus. The work introduces the isotope, its discovery, physical properties, nomenclature, and common compounds, also exploring its application in organic chemistry through classic and recent examples from literature. Finally, the book devotes one chapter to Deuterium in medicinal chemistry and the biological effects of Deuterium Oxide, better known as D2O. Provides unique coverage not found elsewhere that is presented in an accessible, dedicated short work Contains practical information and examples on the use of Deuterium (D or 2H, Heavy Hydrogen) in organic synthesis Presents a detailed description of Deuterium’s discovery and applications in the pharmaceutical industry

Book excerpt: "Rothman's novel is filled with scientific discussions on everything from the equipment used to the different types of fusion, like cold or laser, complete with corresponding jargon. But Rothman turns all of it, even a convoluted conspiracy, into a diverting, worthwhile story... Intelligent in its technical details, but also refined and delightfully complex in its storytelling." -- Kirkus The world is moving towards alternative energy. Two giant laboratories, one in France, one in Texas, are engaged in a contest to give mankind a limitless source of energy-fusion, the energy source of stars. In France, the European Union is constructing the colossal ITER project. At CFRC, the Controlled Fusion Research Center near Austin, a scientists have constructed a machine they call Prometheus to challenge ITER. When the director of the Austin lab attempts to achieve fusion on the day of Prometheus' dedication, a near-fatal accident ensues, and in an instant the rivalry between ITER and CFRC becomes a race to change the future of the world. But was it an accident, or sabotage? Prominent physicist and writer Tony Rothman, PhD, uses his technical expertise to create a rare and timely novel based on genuine science. Not science fiction, the science of Firebird is as real as the collision between science and politics it portrays. Rothman, who has taught physics at Princeton and Harvard Universities, is the author of eleven books. He has won numerous writing awards and has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.
