Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systematic Materials Analysis, Volume II presents a broad range of instrumental methods and approaches that will yield the desired information about a given material. This book serves as a guide for the purchase of new instrumentation. Organized into nine chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the analytical methods on the bases of specimen limitations and information desired by using flow charts encompassing the various instruments. This book then proceeds with a discussion of the specific instruments that outline the theories of operation. Other chapters consider the capability of the methods for quantitative and qualitative measurements of structure, texture, and chemical composition. This text discusses as well the selectivity and sensitivity of each method. The final chapter deals with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and provides a listing of known manufacturers of commercial ESCA (Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis) instrumentation. Materials analysts, laboratory administrator, biological scientists, engineers, and researchers will find this book extremely useful.

Book excerpt: The American edition of our monograph is not a mere translation of the Czech edition, which appeared some five years ago. We have had to respect the fact that even such a short period has sufficed for progress in this field, and that the field of application of methods of organic analysis has widened. We have therefore revised a number of chapters in Part 1, the general part of the monograph-mainly those devoted to chromatographic methods, which have been extended and complemented by methods of thin-layer chromatography and electrophoresis. The chapters on the theory of color reactions and on analytical literature have also been extended; the chapter on spectral methods has been extended by including the use of proton magnetic resonance in organic analysis, and the list of references has been enlarged by adding books of importance for organic analysis. In Part 2, the part dealing specifically with various elements and chemical groups, we have extended the chapters on solubility and on acids and bases. The methods for the detection and identification of given classes of compounds have also been supplemented by references to recent papers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid advances in knowledge have led to an increasing interest in neuro biology over the last several years. These advances have been made possible, at least in part, by the use of increasingly sophisticated methodology. Furthermore, research in the most rapidly advancing areas is essentially multidisciplinary and is characterized by contributions from many investi gators employing a variety of techniques. While a grasp of fundamental neurobiological concepts is an obvious prerequisite for those who wish to follow or participate in this field, critical awareness and evaluation of neurobiological research also requires an understanding of sophisticated methodologies. The objective of Methods in Neurobiology is the development of such critical abilities. The reader is exposed to the basic concepts, principles, and instrumentation of key methodologies, and the application of each meth odology is placed in the special context of neurobiological research. The reader will gain familiarity with the terminology and procedures of each method and the ability to evaluate results in light of the particular features of neurobiological preparations and applications.

In the nineteenth century, organic chemistry was primarily an experimental, empirical science. Throughout the twentieth century, the emphasis has been continually shifting to a more theoretical approach. Today, theoretical organic chemistry is a distinct area of research, with strong links to theoretical physical chemistry, quantum chemistry, computational chemistry, and physical organic chemistry. The objective in this volume has been to provide a cross-section of a number of interesting topics in theoretical organic chemistry, starting with a detailed account of the historical development of this discipline and including topics devoted to quantum chemistry, physical properties of organic compounds, their reactivity, their biological activity, and their excited-state properties.

Book excerpt: Embraced by the inside covers' periodic table of elements and table of solutions of acids, the new edition of this introductory text continues to describe laboratory operations in its first part, and experiments in the second. Revisions by Ault (Cornell U.) include detailed instructions for the disposal of waste, and experiments with more interesting compounds (e.g. seven reactions of vanillin, and isolating ibuprofin from ibuprofin tablets). Conscious of costs, microscale experiments are included but not to the point where minuscule amounts of material will preclude the aesthetic pleasure of watching crystals form or distillates collect. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Spectroscopic Methods for the Identification of Organic Compounds, Volume 2 covers the theoretical aspects and some applications of certain spectroscopic methods for organic compound identification. This book is composed of 10 chapters, and begins with an introduction to the structure determination from mass spectra. The subsequent chapter presents some mass spectrometry seminar problems and answers. This presentation is followed by discussions on the problems concerning the application of UV spectroscopy and electron spin resonance spectroscopy. Other chapters deal with some advances and development in NMR spectroscopy and the elucidation of structural formula of organic compounds by a combination of spectral methods. The final chapter surveys seminar problems and answers in the identification of organic compounds using NMR, IR, UV and mass spectroscopy. This book will prove useful to organic and analytical chemists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of controlled release has attracted increasing attention over the last two decades, with the applications of this technology proliferating in diverse fields in cluding medicine, agriculture and biotechnology. Research and developmental efforts related to controlled release are multiplying in both industry and academia. The reason for this phenomenal growth is obvious. The use of a variety of biologically active agents, such as drugs, fertilizers and pesticides, has become an integral part of modern society. Along with the use of these reagents has evolved an awareness that their uncontrolled application almost inevitably induces harmful effects on the health of humans and their surrounding environments. To eliminate or minimize these harmful effects necessitates the controlled release of these chemicals. Moreover, the controlled release of substances, not usually considered toxic or hazardous, e.g., some catalysts and nutrients, can enhance their effectiveness. The number and variety of controlled release systems, differing in their physical and chemical makeup, are increasing rapidly. Proliferation almost always demands correlation, generalization and unification; it requires both the development of underlying theories of their behavior and the mechanistic interpretation of their performance. This, in turn, requires a statistical and mathematical (quantitative) treatment of the scientific information and technical data pertaining to them. A quantitative treatment can also facilitate the formulation of procedures for computer-aided design of these systems through a priori prediction of their per formance for a variety of design parameters.
