Previous international research found that physical and health education student teachers' (PHE-STs) beliefs on inclusion were influenced by their perceived competence, academic preparation and experience with people with disabilities, gender and academic year. The purpose of this study was to explore PHE-STs' perceptions about IPE in order to gain a novel understanding of IPE. The central research question of this study was: What do PHE-STs perceive about IPE during university teacher training? This qualitative case study consisted of semi-structured interviews with six female and three male fourth-year and recently graduated PHE-STs. Each interview was audio-recorded so data could be transcribed verbatim for a thematic analysis to be conducted. The following five themes emerged through the data analysis: "The physical and health education teacher education program (PHETE)", "Field experiences", "Experiences with people with disabilities", "Perceptions about students with disabilities", and "Perspectives about inclusive physical education". PHE-STs discussed the impact of their field experiences (FEs), the PHETE program, and their prior experiences with SwD outside of the PHETE program on their perceptions about inclusion. Some findings that were unique to this study included participants' experience with their co-operating teacher on their FEs, ability to identify SwD on their FEs, and use of teaching techniques when instructing SwD. This study adds to the research literature because the exploration of PHE-STs' lived experiences and perceptions about IPE helped to identify gaps in current IPE practices and develop new perspectives about IPE. Future research directions are provided at the conclusion of the thesis." --

The present study explored this notion, investigating (a) students without disabilities' conceptions and experiences of participating in a season of Sport Education alongside students with disabilities, (b) voices of students with disabilities regarding their perceptions and experiences of participation in a season of Sport Education, and (c) middle school physical education teachers' perceptions of using the Sport Education curriculum model to include students with disabilities in the general physical education classroom. Participants included 66 seventh grade students, including four students with intellectual and behavioral disabilities, participating in a flag football Sport Education season. Data collection methods comprised formal and informal interviews, focus group interviews, field notes, observations with field notes, critical incident reports and self-reflective journals for teachers. In addition, all lessons were videotaped. Through a Contact Theory framework, the results for students without disabilities showed Sport Education provided enjoyable participation among students, gave students learning ownership, and provided positive experiences with students with disabilities. Five sub-themes aided understanding these students' experiences: a sense of inclusion, perceptions of equality, a climate of assisting others, modifications to the activities, and a greater understanding of students with disabilities. Findings indicated students with disabilities felt they were socially accepted, participated in a student-centered learning environment, had assistance in learning, and perceived responsibilities and participation. Sport Education allowed students with disabilities to take ownership in learning alongside their peers by working in small groups, getting to know other students, and participating in physical education more meaningfully. The Theory of Planned Behavior was used to explore the three physical education teachers' perceptions of using the Sport Education curriculum model to include students with disabilities. Findings indicated that this inclusion is more likely when teachers have positive attitudes toward inclusion. Recognizing a significant amount of a priori planning occurs, teachers also perceived successful inclusion of students with disabilities happens when it promotes a sense of belonging among all students and allows students with disabilities to fulfill meaningful responsibilities during the course of Sport Education.

A mixed methods design using both qualitative and quantitative methods with sequential procedures was used (Creswell, 2003). The sampling design was purposive. Participants (N = 10) were professors of master's degree programs in Adapted Physical Activity, Adapted Physical Education, and/or Special Physical Education. The questionnaire, Performance-based Teaching Behaviors of General and Adapted Physical Educators , consisted of informed consent information and a combination of close-ended (rating scale) and open-ended (comment) questions. Questions were developed using a three-phase approach: (a) an in-depth review and analysis of performance-based teaching behaviors listed in the literature, the National Standards for Beginning Physical Education Teachers (NASPE, 2003), the Standards for Advanced Programs in Physical Education Teacher Education (NASPE, 2001), and the Adapted Physical Education National Standards (Kelly, 2006); (b) information regarding performance-based teaching behaviors obtained from interviews; and (c) validity and reliability measures. Data were collected in summer of 2008. Participants were asked to rank the importance of each of the 145 teaching behaviors for each of the three physical education environments. Data were analyzed using descriptive and nonparametric statistics. Within the limitations of this study, both similarities and differences were identified in the teaching behaviors of effective physical educators who work with and without students with disabilities. Based on the results of this study, a number of teaching behaviors are necessary for effective physical education teachers in any setting and additional teaching behaviors are required for the effective teaching of students with disabilities in both general and adapted physical education.
