Losev assembled top scientists from various Russian institutions at Moscow State University and invited them to pool their knowledge about the changes gases undergo in a variety of aerospace settings from combustion of rocket fuels to hypersonic flow paths to the exteriors of atmospheric reentry vehicles. The work grew into the AVAGADRO Laboratory of Moscow State Universitys Institute of Mechanics. The models and formulas produced by the team of authors are contained in the second edition of the text book, "Physical and Chemical Processes in Gas Dynamics." The text provides a valuable window into the design philosophies and models that govern former-Soviet engineers and scientists. "Normally, these things are not accessible to U.S. engineers, "said Paul Zarchan of MITs Lincoln Laboratory, Editor-in-Chief of AIAAs Progress in Astronautics and Aeronautics Series that includes this text. Accompanying the book is the Russian-produced Chemical Workbench software, which is a user-friendly, Windows-based interface for performing calculations based on the models of gas dynamics contained in the book. The book and software provide concise, exhaustive, and clear descriptions of terms, notations, concepts, methods, laws, and techniques. It is invaluable for students and engineers who are determined to more accurately predict the physical and chemical processes in gas and plasma dynamics.

Book excerpt: In the present monograph, we develop the kinetic theory of transport phenomena and relaxation processes in the flows of reacting gas mixtures and discuss its applications to strongly non-equilibrium conditions. The main attention is focused on the influence of non-equilibrium kinetics on gas dynamics and transport properties. Closed systems of fluid dynamic equations are derived from the kinetic equations in different approaches. We consider the most accurate approach taking into account the state-to-state kinetics in a flow, as well as simplified multi-temperature and one-temperature models based on quasi-stationary distributions. Within these approaches, we propose the algorithms for the calculation of the transport coefficients and rate coefficients of chemical reactions and energy exchanges in non-equilibrium flows; the developed techniques are based on the fundamental kinetic theory principles. The theory is applied to the modeling of non-equilibrium flows behind strong shock waves, in the boundary layer, and in nozzles. The comparison of the results obtained within the frame of different approaches is presented, the advantages of the new state-to-state kinetic model are discussed, and the limits of validity for simplified models are established. The book can be interesting for scientists and graduate students working on physical gas dynamics, aerothermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, non-equilibrium physical-chemical kinetics, and kinetic theory of gases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In high energy gas flows, at high velocities and high temperatures, physical and chemical processes such as molecular vibrational excitation, dissociation, ionisation or various reactions take place and deeply influence the structure of the flows. The characteristic times of these processes have the same order of magnitude as aerodynamic characteristic times, so that these reactive media are generally in thermodynamic and chemical non-equilibrium. This book presents a general introductory study of these media. In the first part their fundamental statistical aspects are described, starting from their discrete structure and taking into account the interactions between elementary particles: transport phenomena, relaxation and kinetics as well as their coupling are analysed and illustrated by many examples. The second part deals with the macroscopic re-entry bodies. Finally, the experimental aspects of these flows, their simulations in shock tubes and shock tunnels are described, as well as their application, particularly in the aerospatial domain. This book is intended for students that have acquired a basic knowledge in thermodynamics, statistical physics and fluid mechanics. It will also be of interest to engineers in research and industry, in particular in the aerospace industry, and more generally to all researchers trying to simulate and calculate complex reactive flows.

Book excerpt: Chemical Kinetics relates to the rates of chemical reactions and factors such as concentration and temperature, which affects the rates of chemical reactions. Such studies are important in providing essential evidence as to the mechanisms of chemical processes. The book is designed to help the reader, particularly students and researchers of physical science, understand the chemical kinetics mechanics and chemical reactions. The selection of topics addressed and the examples, tables and graphs used to illustrate them are governed, to a large extent, by the fact that this book is aimed primarily at physical science (mainly chemistry) technologists. Undoubtedly, this book contains "must read" materials for students, engineers, and researchers working in the chemistry and chemical kinetics area. This book provides valuable insight into the mechanisms and chemical reactions. It is written in concise, self-explanatory and informative manner by a world class scientists in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses processes common in the three major fields of thermal science - Thermodynamics, Thermochemistry, and Gas Dynamics. Chapter topics include heat, work and entropy transfers in equilibrium, non-equilibrium, and local-equilibrium systems; calculus of multi-variable functions; equations of state of ideal and real gases; heat capacities of ideal and real gases and their mixtures; the Gibbs Equations; phase-equilibrium and multi-phase transitions; thermodynamic cycles and their efficiencies; fluxes and flow rates, subsonic and supersonic flows, and gas-dynamic shock waves; chemical equilibrium and rates of chemical reactions; the dissipation of energy in real systems, their exergies, and the available work. Part of the book discusses important systems of units used in science and engineering. Scattered through the text are numerous illustrative problems with solutions intended to help readers increase their understanding of the studied concepts and methods. Since thermal processes are important in many areas of science and technology, the book will be useful to students and professionals working in the areas, including the rapidly increasing number of those who work on multi-disciplinary projects but have no extended training in thermal sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book began as a program of self-education. While teaching under graduate physical chemistry, I became progressively more dissatisfied with my approach to chemical kinetics. The solution to my problem was to write a detailed set of lecture notes which covered more material, in greater depth, than could be presented in undergraduate physical chemistry. These notes are the foundation upon which this book is built. My background led me to view chemical kinetics as closely related to transport phenomena. While the relationship of these topics is well known, it is often ignored, except for brief discussions of irreversible thermody namics. In fact, the physics underlying such apparently dissimilar processes as reaction and energy transfer is not so very different. The intermolecular potential is to transport what the potential-energy surface is to reactivity. Instead of beginning the sections devoted to chemical kinetics with a discussion of various theories, I have chosen to treat phenomenology and mechanism first. In this way the essential unity of kinetic arguments, whether applied to gas-phase or solution-phase reaction, can be emphasized. Theories of rate constants and of chemical dynamics are treated last, so that their strengths and weaknesses may be more clearly highlighted. The book is designed for students in their senior year or first year of graduate school. A year of undergraduate physical chemistry is essential preparation. While further exposure to chemical thermodynamics, statistical thermodynamics, or molecular spectroscopy is an asset, it is not necessary.

Book excerpt: Kinetics and Dynamics of Elementary Gas Reactions surveys the state of modern knowledge on elementary gas reactions to understand natural phenomena in terms of molecular behavior. Part 1 of this book describes the theoretical and conceptual background of elementary gas-phase reactions, emphasizing the assumptions and limitations of each theoretical approach, as well as its strengths. In Part 2, selected experimental results are considered to demonstrate the scope of present day techniques and illustrate the application of the theoretical ideas introduced in Part 1. This publication is intended primarily for working kineticists and chemists, but is also beneficial to graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion Thermodynamics and Dynamics builds on a foundation of thermal science, chemistry, and applied mathematics that will be familiar to most undergraduate aerospace, mechanical, and chemical engineers to give a first-year graduate-level exposition of the thermodynamics, physical chemistry, and dynamics of advection-reaction-diffusion. Special effort is made to link notions of time-independent classical thermodynamics with time-dependent reactive fluid dynamics. In particular, concepts of classical thermochemical equilibrium and stability are discussed in the context of modern nonlinear dynamical systems theory. The first half focuses on time-dependent spatially homogeneous reaction, while the second half considers effects of spatially inhomogeneous advection and diffusion on the reaction dynamics. Attention is focused on systems with realistic detailed chemical kinetics as well as simplified kinetics. Many mathematical details are presented, and several quantitative examples are given. Topics include foundations of thermochemistry, reduced kinetics, reactive Navier–Stokes equations, reaction-diffusion systems, laminar flame, oscillatory combustion, and detonation.
