A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Existing interventions to improve exercise behavior have had limited success. The possible selves framework, which posits that individuals are motivated by vivid cognitive representations of people they might become in the future, offers an alternative approach to increasing physical activity (Markus & Nurius, 1986). This longitudinal study randomly assigned 272 female college students to one of three experimental conditions: A no-intervention control, an action strategy intervention based on implementation intentions (Gollwitzer, 1999), and a possible selves plus action strategy condition. Participants in all three conditions were asked to write for 30 minutes. Participants in the no-intervention control group described their preferred activities and lifestyle choices, and participants in the action strategy-only condition wrote about possible obstacles to exercising and ways to overcome those obstacles. Participants in the possible selves plus action strategy condition wrote about how they would look and feel in the future if they were to exercise regularly. They also wrote about obstacles to exercising and possible solutions to those obstacles. Six weeks after the intervention participants were contacted by telephone and were asked how many minutes of exercise they had engaged in within the previous week. The intervention was not effective in increasing physical activity; all three experimental conditions reported engaging in similar levels of exercise. As one of the few studies that has attempted to induce a possible self and to examine its effects on behavior over time, this research provides an important contribution to the growing body of literature on possible selves.

Book excerpt: Physical activity levels tend to decline as students transition from high school to college, and freshmen college women may be particularly susceptible to physical activity barriers. It is possible that providing physical activity resources and support via text messages could assist freshmen women in increasing their physical activity levels. The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a mobile group-based intervention for freshmen female college students on physical activity and sedentary behavior. In addition, we examined intervention effects on social support, enjoyment, and stress in this population. Freshmen females (n=30) were recruited to participate in a 9-week intervention that involved wearing a physical activity monitor for three individual weeks (week 0, week 5, and week 9) and receiving tailored weekly messages via GroupMe. Participants were randomly assigned to groups of 6-7 participants, and each group was moderated by one research assistant. GroupMe discussions were specifically formatted to provide physical activity social support, promote physical activity enjoyment, enhance knowledge about benefits of physical activity, suggest ways to decrease sedentary behavior, and increase awareness of various physical activity resources on campus, such as the recreational center. Outcomes were assessed at baseline and post-intervention. Additionally, follow-up focus group sessions were conducted during the fall semester of the participants' sophomore year to gain further feedback about the intervention. We hypothesized that students would demonstrate increases in physical activity, enjoyment, and social support, and decreases in sedentary behavior and stress after participating in the intervention. Results revealed no significant changes in physical activity or sedentary behavior based on objective data from the activPALs. Along with the physical improvements that exercise can have, there are other benefits, including increased academic performance. There is a large volume of research that looks at the benefits of exercise on academic performance. Taras (2005), Trudeau and Shephard (2008) and Singh et al. (2012) have compiled reviews of the literature thoroughly investigating the relationship between physical activity and academic performance. They have concluded that there is a positive connection between the two. Other researchers have concluded that exercise contributes to other factors in academic success, such as concentration and memory. However, there is minimal research that reflects upon the experiences of college-aged students who engage in physical activity. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to understand the experiences of college-aged female students who participated in an exercise intervention program titled Exercise for Academic Success and Excellence (EASE). Eleven female participants engaged in the EASE program for approximately 12 weeks. The participants were directed to exercise for 150 minutes a week and submit weekly logs recording their experiences regarding exercise and academic performance during the duration of the intervention. The participants perceived physical, cognitive and emotional benefits and enhanced academic performance, regardless of grade point average increases. The students who experienced the most benefits, particularly in GPA were the students who met the minimum requirement to exercise (150 minutes per week). These trends imply that an on-campus exercise program that students are held accountable for may have prompted improvements in their academic success.
