Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first chapter in the present volume takes up a well-known theme in modern context: the ideas concerning non-Stokesian mechanisms of ion transport. We are happy that one of the great pioneers of modern electrochemistry, T. Erdey-Gniz, in collaboration with S. Lengyel, has consented to write this article for us. Along with it is a solution-oriented article in spectroscopic vein, namely, that by A. Covington and K. E. Newman on the analysis of solution constituents by means of nuclear magnetic resonance studies. Progress in the electrochemistry of the double layer has perked up, and the advances have been triggered from critical experiments, one showing that fluoride ions are specifically adsorbed, and the other showing that the position of maximum disorder of the water molecules occurs at a charge opposite to that needed for interpreta tions of capacitance humps in terms of water molecules. M. A. Habib, who has contributed to the theory in this area, reviews the con sequences of these changes in information. The rise in the price of energy toward a situation in which sources other than the fossil fuels become economical implies much for the fuel cell and electrocatalysis. It has long been known that electrocatalysis in real situations was more than a consideration of exchange current densities, and a gap remains in the formulation of the theory of supports for such catalysts, although Boudart has stressed so much the vital nature of them. P. Stonehart and K. A. Kinoshita describe progress in this area.

Dr. Cahn is Senior Fellow at the Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and is widely recognized as a founder of modern theory and thought in materials science. The range of his research included kinetics and mechanisms of metallurgical phase changes, surfaces, interfaces, defects, quasicrystals, thermodynamics, and other areas impacting the fundamental understanding of materials science. Each paper includes a 2-4 page review of the impact and historical perspective of the work. This is an important collection for students, instructors, and scientists interested in materials science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frequent use of well known critical data handbooks like Beilstein, Gmelin and Landolt Bornstein is impeded by the fact that merely larger libraries - often far away from the scientist's working place - can afford such precious collections. To satisfy an urgent need of many scientists for having at their working place a comprehensive, high quality, but cheap collection of at least the basic data oftheirfield of interest the series "Data in Science and Technology"is started now. This first volume presents the most important data on two groups of semiconductors, the elements of the IVth group of the periodic system and the III-V compounds. All data were compiled from information on about 2500 pages in various volumes of the New Series of Landolt-Bornstein. For each critically chosen data set and each figure the original literature is cited. In addition, tables of content refer to the handbooks the data were drawn from. Thus the presentation of data in this volume is of the same high quality standard as in the original evaluated data collections. We hope to meet the needs of the physical community with the volumes of the series "Data in Science and Technology", forming bridges between the laboratory and additional information sources in the libraries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiconductors Probed by Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopy, Volume 1 discusses the use of ultrafast laser spectroscopy in studying fast physics in semiconductors. It reviews progress on the experimental and theoretical understanding of ultrafast events that occur on a picosecond and nanosecond time scale. This volume first explores the relaxation of energy and the momentum of hot carriers and then turns to relaxation of plasmas and phonons. It also discusses the dynamics of excitons, polaritons, and excitonic molecules and reviews transient transport and diffusion of carriers. Scientists, engineers, and graduate students will find this book invaluable.

The book presents a wide treatment of these topics, and includes descriptions of detailed theoretical models to describe dislocations and cracks, and moving dislocations. An overview is given of the physical behaviour resulting from dislocation mobility in materials, such as glide and climb, interactions with point defects and the behaviour of dislocations under radiation such as creep and swelling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In condensed matter initially fast positrons annihilate after having reached equi librium with the surroundings. The interaction of positrons with matter is governed by the laws of ordinary quantum mechanics. Field theory and antiparticle properties enter only in the annihilation process leading to the emergence of energetic photons. The monitoring of annihilation radiation by nuclear spectroscopic methods provides valuable information on the electron-positron system which can directly be related to the electronic structure of the medium. Since the positron is a positive electron its behavior in matter is especially interesting to solid-state and atomic physi cists. The small mass quarantees that the positron is really a quantum mechanical particle and completely different from any other particles and atoms. Positron physics started about 25 years ago but discoveries of new features in its interac tion with matter have maintained continuous interest and increasing activity in the field. Nowadays it is becoming part of the "stock-in-trade" of experimental physics.
