This book was released on 2008-11-14 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological invasions by alien (non-native) species are widely recognized as a significant component of human-caused global environmental change and the second most important cause of biodiversity decline. Alien species threaten many European ecosystems and have serious environmental, economic and health impacts. The DAISIE (Delivering Alien Invasive Species Inventories for Europe) project has now brought together all available information on alien species in Europe (terrestrial, aquatic and marine) and from all taxa (fungi, plants, animals). Thus for the first time, an overview and assessment of biological invasions in the Pan-European region is finally possible. The Handbook of Alien Species in Europe summarises the major findings of this groundbreaking research and addresses the invasion trends, pathways, and both economic as well as ecological impact for eight major taxonomic groups. Approximately 11.000 alien species recorded in Europe are listed, and fact sheets for 100 of the most invasive alien species are included, each with a distribution map and colour illustration. The book is complemented by a regularly updated internet database providing free additional information. With its highly interdisciplinary approach, DAISIE and its Handbook will be the basis for future scientific investigations as well as management and control of alien invasive species in Europe.

Book Synopsis Diversity and Classification of Flowering Plants by : Armen Leonovich Takhtadzhi͡an
Download or read book Diversity and Classification of Flowering Plants written by Armen Leonovich Takhtadzhi͡an and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culmination of more than fifty years of research by the foremost living expert on plant classification, Diversity and Classification of Flowering Plants is an important contribution to the field of plant taxonomy. In the last decade, the system of classifying plants has been thoroughly revised. Instead of describing every individual family, Takhtajan includes descriptions in keys to families, which he calls "descriptive keys." The advantage of descriptive keys is that they give both the characteristic features of the families and their differences. The delimitation of families and orders drastically differs from the one accepted by the Englerian school and from the one accepted in Arthur Cronquist's system. Takhtajan favors the smaller, more natural families and orders, which are more coherent and better-defined, where characters are easily grasped, and which are more suitable for information retrieval and phylogenetic studies, including cladistic analysis (because it reduces polymorphic codings).

Book Synopsis Molecular Systematics of Plants by : Pamela S. Soltis
Download or read book Molecular Systematics of Plants written by Pamela S. Soltis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of molecular techniques is rapidly transforming the study of plant systematics. The precision they offer enables researchers to classify plants that have not been subject to rigorous classification before and thus allows them to obtain a clearer picture of evolutionary relationships. Plant Molecular Systematics is arranged both conceptually and phylogenetically to accommodate the interests not only of general systematists, but also those of people interested in a particular plant family. The first part discusses molecular sequencing; the second reviews restriction site analysis and the sequencing of mitochondrial DNA. A third section details the analysis of ribosomal DNA and chloroplast DNA. The following section introduces model studies involving well-studied families such as the Onagraceae, Compositae and Leguminosae. The book concludes with a section addressing theoretical topics such as data analysis and the question of morphological vs. molecular data.

Book excerpt: This guide in this series of botanical monographs aims to provide a comprehensive account of the 19 species of the genus cyclamen. The genus cyclamen comprises of a group of very distinct species native to parts of Europe and western Asia, as well as North Africa. It belongs to the primrose family, the primulaceae, and although the flowers bear some resemblance to other genera in the family, especially dodecatheon and soldanella, cyclamen has no obvious affinities and holds a rather isolated position.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is much public concern about threats to global biodiversity. Industrial pollution, changes in agricultural practices and climate change, are all having a direct impact on biodiversity. In this book the Editors provide a broad view of the many pressures imposed by human-induced changes and the many threats to global biodiversity and of the policy responses required to combat them. This excellent text includes the work of some 44 authors and offers a solid description of the current understanding of threats to biodiversity with a range of illustrative examples - a valuable point of reference for ecologists, environmental scientists, and students as well as, policymakers and all other environmental professionals.
Book Synopsis Europe's Environment by : European Environment Agency
Download or read book Europe's Environment written by European Environment Agency and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third review in the series of reports on the state of the environment throughout the European continent, which also provides an assessment of how the main economic driving forces put pressure on the environment and identifies key areas where further action is needed. It was prepared for the meeting of European environmental ministers held under the auspices of the UN Economic Commission for Europe in Ukraine in May 2003. For the first time, this review covers the entire Russian Federation and the 11 other Eastern European, Caucasus and Central Asian (EECCA) states. Chapters consider: developments in socio-economic sectors such as energy, industry, agriculture, transport and tourism; prominent environmental problems such as climate change, ozone depletion, air pollution and soil degradation; cross-cutting issues of biological diversity and human health impacts; and policy management aspects.
Book Synopsis Systematics and Evolution of the Genera of the Marchantiales by : Helene Bischler
Download or read book Systematics and Evolution of the Genera of the Marchantiales written by Helene Bischler and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This survey of the order Marchantiales contains descriptions of the order and of the genera including morphological, ontogenetic and cytological characters, reassessed with living plant material, ecological data, life history traits, geographical distributions and keys, as well as an outline of published evolutionary classifications and scenarios based on morphological, phytochemical and molecular sequence data. The relationships of the order with the other liverwort orders, with the mosses and with the land plants are summarized. The phylogenetic reconstruction does not confirm most of the assumptions on evolution based on phytochemical data, or on molecular sequence data, sampled at present for only a small number of species. In the future, alanysis of other, especially ontogenetic, data and more complete sets of phytochemical and molecular sequence data will be necessary to test the robustness of the proposed phylogenetic hypothesis. A critical reevaluation of morphological characters might then be within reach.
