Book Synopsis Species Trees and Species Delimitation in the California Trapdoor Spider Genus Aliatypus (Mygalomorphae, Antrodiaetidae) by :
Download or read book Species Trees and Species Delimitation in the California Trapdoor Spider Genus Aliatypus (Mygalomorphae, Antrodiaetidae) written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trapdoor spider genus Aliatypus (Mygalomorphae, Antrodiaetidae) encompasses twelve described species, eleven of which are endemic to California. Several Aliatypus species show disjunct distributional patterns in California (some are found on both sides of the vast Central Valley), and the genus as a whole occupies an impressive variety of habitats. Chapter One uses molecular phylogenetics to explore the systematics and evolution of this group of spiders. DNA sequence data were collected from seven gene regions. Bayesian inference (in individual gene tree and species tree approaches) recovered a general "3 clade" structure for the genus (A. gulosus, californicus group, erebus group), with three other phylogenetically isolated species differing slightly in position across different phylogenetic analyses. For multiple species spanning the Central Valley, explicit hypothesis testing suggests a lack of monophyly for regional populations (e.g., western Coast Range populations). In addition, phylogenetic evidence clearly shows that syntopy is restricted to distant phylogenetic relatives, consistent with ecological niche conservatism. Overall, Chapter One provides fundamental insight into a radiation of trapdoor spiders found in the biodiversity hotspot of California. Chapter Two focuses on evolutionary dynamics and possible cryptic species within the nominal taxon A. thompsoni. This species was described using morphology, ecology, and behavioral traits, although molecular data in Chapter One suggests a species complex comprised of multiple cryptic species. A comprehensive sampling effort throughout the geographic distribution of this species, combined with sampling of four independent molecular markers, confirms the species complex hypothesis. These data are used in combination with multiple coalescent-based approaches to understand species limits and interrelationships within A. thompsoni. Data and analyses support a three species complex, although this is likely a conservative estimate, with potentially up to five species. Chapter Two provides a framework for determining species limits through statistical tests and analyses.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genus Actinopus Perty, 1833, is revised for Argentina, comprising a total of 23 species. The female of A. insignis (Holmberg, 1881) is described for the first time; the species is found in northern Buenos Aires, southern Santa Fe, and Uruguay. The female of A. longipalpis (Koch, 1842), previously known only from the male type from Uruguay, is described for the first time, and the species is newly cited for Argentina (Entre Ríos). Twenty new species are recognized, described and illustrated. Thirteen of the new species are based on males and females (A. reycali, sp. nov., from Jujuy and Salta; A. clavero, sp. nov., from Córdoba; A. szumikae, sp. nov., from Córdoba, southern Buenos Aires, Santa Fe and Corrientes; A. coylei, sp. nov., from Salta and Santiago del Estero, A. argenteus, sp. nov., from Santiago del Estero, Córdoba and Catamarca, A. ramirezi, sp. nov., from Misiones, A. patagonia, sp. nov., from Chubut, La Pampa, Río Negro and southern Buenos Aires, A. gerschiapelliarum, sp. nov., from Córdoba, northern Buenos Aires, southern Santa Fe, northern La Pampa and Canelones in Uruguay, A. pampa, sp. nov., from La Pampa, A. septemtrionalis, sp. nov., from Salta, Tucumán, Catamarca, and Formosa, A. taragui, sp. nov., from Corrientes, Chaco, and Misiones, A. excavatus, sp. nov., from Córdoba, A. casuhati, sp. nov., from southern Buenos Aires). Only one of the new species described is based on females only (A. indiamuerta, sp. nov., from Tucumán); and the remaining six on males (A. puelche, sp. nov., from southern Buenos Aires and Uruguay, A. cordobensis, sp. nov., from San Luis and Córdoba, A. magnus, sp. nov., from Córdoba, A. ariasi, sp. nov., from Formosa, A. palmar, sp. nov., from Entre Ríos, and A. balcarce, sp. nov., from southern Buenos Aires). New morphological characters that can help solve phylogenetic relationships within the genus are described. A dichotomous key for all the species from Argentina is provided, as well as maps of the known geographic distribution for all the species. Three of the species treated here (A. gerschiapelliarum, A. puelche, and A. insignis) are recorded also for Uruguay.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genus Pimus Chamberlin 1947 is a group of small-bodied, cribellate, ground-dwelling spiders found throughout central and northern California, and into central Oregon. Ten species of Pimus have been formally described. Historically, descriptions of Pimus species have been based on female morphology alone, and in some cases based on single female specimens. The goals of this study are to re-evaluate these species hypotheses using molecular data (CO1, actin and 28S), and use new collections as well as museum specimens to provide a more comprehensive examination of both female and male morphology. No hypotheses regarding species relationships in the genus have ever been presented, so this study also presents the first species-level phylogenetic hypotheses for the genus. Pimus species are distributed throughout many biogeographic regions in California, and seem to be characterized by small, allopatric distributions - this study also explores the biogeographic history and timing of diversification in Pimus. Phylogenetic analyses recover twelve distinctive genetic clades, six of which correspond to previously-defined morphological species. Biogeographic regions do not include monophyletic groups of species, with sister relationships most often occurring between geographically disjunct sister species. Many biogeographic relationships seen in Pimus are mirrored in other taxa (spiders, salamanders), and include relationships that span the Central Valley, and concordant breaks in the Klamath/Trinity mountains, Sierra Nevadas and Coast Ranges. Neither male nor female genitalia were particularly useful in species delimitation, however the shape of the male palpal RTA (retrolateral tibial apophysis) does correspond phylogenetically to deeper groupings of species.

Download or read book Fossil Spiders written by David Penney and published by Siri Scientific Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared to insects, fossil spiders have received only scant attention in the literature. Previously, the only works available were numerous scientific papers, many published in foreign languages. Most of these are basic descriptive taxonomic works, with very few considering broader biological concepts. Despite a significant increase in the discovery and description of fossil spiders within the last quarter Century this void remained unfilled. Thus, this short monograph aims to achieve several objectives. Firstly, to provide general and up to date background information on the overall importance and diversity of fossils spiders, including an indication of those groups for which the taxonomy is spurious and in need of reassessment. Secondly, to discuss the techniques available for working with fossil spiders and some of the problems encountered by palaeoarachnologists, including bias and limitations of the spider fossil record. Thirdly, the overall evolutionary history of spiders is summarized in the form of an evolutionary tree, which is subsequently used to address key issues of broad interest, such as origins, diversifications and extinctions, including the effects of mass extinctions and predator-prey co-radiations. Finally, the contribution that fossil data can make to understanding the past and present biogeography of the order is considered. This book should be of interest to both amateur and professional arachnologists and palaeontologists and will also serve as a general palaeontological reference work for neonologists studying extant spiders.
