Book excerpt: Photospheric and chromospheric longitudinal magnetic fields and the brightness of faculae and flocculi are compared. The connection between the brightness distribution at different depths in active regions on the sun is investigated. The following results are obtained: (1) There is a close connection between the position of faculae observed in the light of the lines 5250 and 6102.7 and flocculi observed in K3Ca(+) lines and the H(alpha) nucleus, as well as the position of the photospheric and chromospheric magnetic fields; (2) The correlation factors between the brightnesses of flocculi in the K3 line and the H(alpha) nucleus are roughly identical with both photospheric and chromospheric fields; (3) The course of the brightness change in the case of a section through an active region in the lines 5250, 6102.7, K3 and the H(alpha) nucleus is approximately equal, although there sometimes are small deviations. The results obtained agree well with the fact that the distributions of the magnetic field in the photosphere and chromosphere are close (Severny, 1966 and 1960).
