It is written from a physics point of view with an emphasis on materials science. Equations are well explained and often completely avoided to increase the readability of the book. The book is divided into eight chapters, starting with a brief introduction. The second chapter deals with different dimensionalities of the photonic crystals and their properties. The third chapter is very interestingly written and provides a survey of the various synthesis methods used for production of photonic crystals, including chemical routes, lithography, and self-assembly of colloidal photonic crystals. Chapters 4–8 constitute the bulk of the book and provide examples of applications of these photonic crystals. Chapter 4 offers a good explanation of optical switching. Bandgap and defect mode switching are also brought into focus along with many other mechanisms—14 different switching mechanisms in all, including thermal, electro, and magneto switching. Frequency tuning of photonic crystal filters with special attention to nanosize photonic crystals is illustrated, providing a direct perspective on applications of these materials in integrated photonic circuits. The transition from chapter 5 to 6 dealing with photonic crystal lasers is smooth, especially after a clear description of frequency tuning. Here, one- to three-dimensional photonic lasers are explained along with laser oscillations produced by a variety of microcavity methods. Metallodielectric and liquid-crystal photonic lasers are equally well illustrated. Chapter 7 introduces logic devices based on photonic crystals. This chapter clearly explains, with the help of simple illustrations, how to obtain AND, OR, and XOR logic gates. Chapter 8 concludes the book by presenting possible applications, including gas, chemical, fluid, and cell sensing; their workings are very well described from a fundamental point of view. The diagrams and illustrations are appropriate and eye catching. There are ample references; thus readers are able to find more detailed information to satisfy their curiosity if the book does not suffice. Even though the introduction provides basics of these photonic crystals, I do get the impression that the bigger picture is missing. A nonexpert may not understand the direct application of such materials right from the beginning of the book. A flowchart or a diagram of these photonic crystals, illustrating applications in daily life at the beginning of the book, could attract a broader readership. In this regard, I believe that this book is most adapted to physicists with a materials science background or vice versa. However, one should take into consideration that the principles of photonic crystals cannot be explained without physics, and therefore the quality of this book remains intact and could very well serve as a textbook for future physicists.

Book excerpt: Semiconductor quantum dots are promising candidates as bright, indistinguishable, single-photon sources--making them desirable for applications in quantum computing and quantum cryptography protocols. By embedding the quantum dots in III-V nanowires, the collection efficiency from the quantum dot is greatly increased. Our goal is to develop a platform that allows for the stable and efficient generation of single-photons on chip. This on-chip design offers an enhanced degree of stability and miniaturization, important in many applications involving the processing of quantum information. In this thesis, we demonstrate the efficient coupling of quantum light generated in a III-V photonic nanowire to a silicon-based photonic integrated circuit. We use high quality SiN waveguide devices fabricated by a foundry (LIGENTEC) to minimize coupling and propagation losses through the waveguide. A hybrid integration of these single-photon sources with a photonic integrated circuit is developed by employing a "pick & place" method which uses a nanomanipulator in a scanning electron microscope setup. By tailoring the nanowire geometry, we are able to maximize the efficient coupling between the optical mode of the photonic nanowire and an accompanying SiN waveguide through evanescent coupling. To determine the effectiveness of our integration method, we compare our hybrid devices with free-standing nanowires on their growth substrate. For each set, we measured the optical properties (brightness, spectral purity, lifetime, and single-photon purity) and efficiencies of the devices. We have shown that using tapered nanowires with embedded quantum dots coupled to on-chip photonic structures is a viable route for the fabrication of stable, high-efficiency, single-photon sources. Although the measured collection efficiencies from device to device were substantially different 9.6%~93%, we have found that the optical properties of the hybrid devices were hardly impacted from the transfer process. In fact, from the same nanowire that achieved 93% coupling efficiency, we were able to measure a single photon purity of 97%. By comparing the amount of emitted light collected from both ends of the nanowire (taper and base), we confirmed that the coupling efficiency of the devices have a strong dependence on the geometry of the nanowire as collection from the taper yielded count rates at least 10x greater than from the base. From our promising results, we can envision integrating the nanowire devices with different types of photonic structures such as ring resonators.

As is described in this chapter, there are many possible device applications such as quantum dot tunneling memory devices, quantum dot fioating-dot gate FETs, quantum dot lasers, and quantum dot hole-burning memory devices. The quantum dot laser applications seem to be the most practicable among these applications. However, many problems remain to be solved before even this application becomes practical. The most important issue is to of self-assembled quantum dots more pre control the size and position cisely, with an accuracy on an atomic scale. The confinement must be enough to keep the separation energy between quantized energy levels high enough to get high-temperature characteristics. The lasing oscillation frequency should be fixed at 1.3 f.lITl or 1.5 f.lITl for optical communication. Phonon bottleneck problems should be solved by the optimization of device structures. Fortunately, there is much activity in the area of quantum dot lasers and, therefore, many breakthroughs will be made, along with the exploration of other new application areas.
