Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revised 2nd edition of this practical book provides an expanded treatment and comparison of techniques used in advanced optical measurements, guiding its reader from fundamental radiometric and photometric concepts to the state-of-the-art in highly sensitive measurements of optical losses and in spectroscopic detection using coherent laser light and spontaneous radiation. The book describes and compares a broad array of high-sensitivity methods and techniques – from interferometric and/or calorimetric, acousto-optic and resonator or polarization to wavelength- and frequency-modulation, phase-shift and decay time studies, and direct-loss measurements for free-space, fiber- or waveguide-based systems and devices. Updated throughout, the new edition describes novel trends in spectral interferometry, frequency-comb and laser-excitation spectroscopy, reflected in the developments of Raman, Brillouin and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra-Red) techniques for biomedical research, biotech sensing and detection. It also covers broad practical implementations of time- and frequency-domain terahertz spectroscopy measurements. This book reviews the physical concepts of radiation transfer, providing a quantitative foundation for the means of measurements of optical losses, which affect propagation and distribution of light waves in various media and in diverse optical systems and components. It focuses on the application of optical methods and procedures for the evaluation of transparent, reflecting, scattering, absorbing, and aggregated objects, and for determining the power and energy parameters of radiation and color properties of light. This updated new edition will serve as an up-to-date reference source and practical guide for those using photometric and radiometric techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material given in this 'Introduction to astronomical photometry' is the subject matter of a lecture at the University of Geneva. It is, therefore, intended for those students, physicists or mathematicians, who have completed their bachelor's degree or diploma, and are intending to work for their Ph.D. in astronomy. We assume then the elementary ideas of astrophysics, magnitude, colour index, spectral classes, luminosity classes, gradient, atmospheric extinction are already known. The student may find it useful to re-read the work of Schatzman [1], Dufay [2] and Aller [254] before embarking upon the study of this 'Introduction to astronomical photometry'. It is not our aim in this book to deal with every aspect of stellar photometry. On the contrary, we shall restriet ourselves to looking at subjects ofwhich knowledge seems to us essential for someone who has to use photometrie quantities in his astronomical research. We are, therefore, keeping the interests of the photometrie measurements user partieularly in mind. We shall only discuss very superficially the technical prob lems and reduction methods for atmospheric extinction. These problems are dealt with very clearly in Astronomical Techniques [3]; the first by A. Lallemand, H. L.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will bring together experts in the field of astronomical photometry to discuss how their subfields provide the precision and accuracy in astronomical energy flux measurements that are needed to permit tests of astrophysical theories. Differential photometers and photometry, improvements in infrared precision, the improvements in precision and accuracy of CCD photometry, the absolute calibration of flux, the development of the Johnson UBVRI photometric system and other passband systems to measure and precisely classify specific types of stars and astrophysical quantities, and the current capabilities of spectrophotometry, and polarimetry to provide precise and accurate data, will all be discussed in this volume. The discussion of `differential’ or `two-star’ photometers will include those developed for planetary as well as stellar photometry and will range from the Princeton polarizing photometer through the pioneering work of Walraven to the differential photometers designed to measure the ashen light of Venus and to counter the effects of aurorae at high latitude sites; the last to be discussed will be the Rapid Alternate Detection System (RADS) developed at the University of Calgary in the 1980s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small and large telescopes are being installed all around the world. Astronomers have thus acquired better access to more modern equipment; not in the least to photometers, which are very important tools for the contemporary observer. This development of higher quality and more sensitive equipment makes it very necessary to improve the accuracy of the measurements. This guide helps the astronomer and astronomy student to improve the quality of their photometric measurements and to extract a maximum of information from their observations. The book is based on the authors' observing experience, spending numerious nights behind various instruments at many different observatories.

Articles from international experts - drawn together at the IAU Colloquium 136, in Dublin, 1992 - are gathered here to cover all aspects of this fundamental technique. In this survey, professionals discuss state-of-the-art and future technology including photometry with millimagnitude accuracy, multichannel arrays used in the optical and IR, a global network of automatic photometric telescopes, time-series photometry of faint sources using CCDs, and photometry from space. These articles provide an up-to-date account of all aspects of photometry and a guide to future developments - an essential survey for professionals involved in the design and use of such instruments.

Book excerpt: Astrometry from space was performed for the first time and with great success by the ESA Hipparcos satellite (1989-93). This mission was designed as an as trometry mission, but the use of a photon counting detector made it possible to produce very important photometric results: the most accurate astronomical pho tometry ever by the main Hipparcos mission in a very broad band of 120000 stars, and the two-colour Tycho-2 photometry of 2.5 million stars. The cornerstone ESA mission GAIA was approved in October 2000 for launch not later than 2012. This mission will use CCDs in time-delayed integration mode instead of the photo-cathode detectors used in Hipparcos. Due to the higher quantum efficiency of the CCDs, simultaneous integration of many stars, and larger tele scope apertures GAIA will utilize the star light a million times more efficiently than Hipparcos, resulting in astrometry and multi-colour photometry for one billion stars. GAIA photometry is crucial for the scientific utilization of the astrometric results, and the photometric data have a high scientific content in themselves.

Book excerpt: The report summarizes the results of a fluorescent lamp intercomparison carried out under the aegis of the National Bureau of Standards Photometry Section. The purpose of the intercomparison was to evaluate the interlaboratory precision obtainable in photometric and spectroradiometric measurements. The tests were also designed to disclose suspected systematic errors in measurement techniques. The intercomparison consisted of five parts: A homochromatic, photometric measurement of cool white fluorescent lamps and a heterochromatic, photometric measurement of a daylight fluorescent lamp and an incandescent lamp utilizing cool white fluorescent lamps as standards, all within an integrating sphere. Spectroradiometric measurement of the above mentioned lamps in an intergrating sphere. Spectroradiometric measurement of a 25 cm section of the fluorescent lamps in a baffled enclosure. An experiment designed to reveal systematic errors in heterochromatic photometry. Measurement of the x and y chromaticity coordinates with a Barnes colorimeter. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together the contributions of eleven leading photometric experts, this practical reference guide presents common design formulas, essential rules-of-thumb, worked-out examples, and discussions of photometric instruments. Arranged for ease of reference, the twelve chapters, each of which may be read independently, are grouped into three sections. The first contains introductory material, and defines the terminology and units of measurement used in photometry, while the second covers photometric methods and procedures and provides numerous illustrative case studies. The third section contains reports from the frontiers of photometry, and includes a look at the directions future research might take. Abundantly illustrated and thoroughly referenced, this will prove invaluable to those involved in lighting design, optical physics, or applications design, and will be welcomed by workers in government-standards laboratories. The text is supplemented by a list of Web sites which offer photometry information, as well as the editors Web Companion -- an online site for discussion about the book and related issues.
