Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to light when it is trapped in a box? Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics addresses a fascinating question inphysics: what happens to light, and in particular to itsinteraction with matter, when it is trapped inside a box? With theaid of a model-building approach, readers discover the answer tothis question and come to appreciate its important applications incomputing, cryptography, quantum teleportation, andopto-electronics. Instead of taking a traditional approach thatrequires readers to first master a series of seemingly unconnectedmathematical techniques, this book engages the readers' interestand imagination by going straight to the point, introducing themathematics along the way as needed. Appendices are provided forthe additional mathematical theory. Researchers, scientists, and students of modern physics can referto Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics and examine the field thoroughly.Several key topics covered that readers cannot find in any otherquantum optics book include: * Introduction to the problem of the "vacuum catastrophe" and thecosmological constant * Detailed up-to-date account of cavity QED lasers andthresholdless lasing * Examination of cavities with movable walls * First-principles discussion about cavity QED in opencavities * Pedagogical account of microscopic quantization indielectrics Complementing the coverage of the most advanced theory andtechniques, the author provides context by discussing thehistorical evolution of the field and its discoveries. In thatspirit, "recommended reading," provided in each chapter, leadsreaders to both contemporary literature as well as key historicalpapers. Despite being one of many specialties within physics, cavityquantum electrodynamics serves as a window to many of thefundamental issues of physics. Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics willserve as an excellent resource for advanced undergraduate quantummechanics courses as well as for graduate students, researchers, and scientists who need a comprehensive introduction to the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study program has been to study methods of detection of coherent or partially coherent optical radiation in a noncoherent background. This study is primarily intended for application at low light levels and low ratios of coherent to noncoherent (i.e., signal/noise) light. This study has application for identifying/locating a source of partially coherent light (e.g., laser) in daylight or in the presence of thermal background radiation. Essentially this measurement method is based upon measurements of temporal coherence of received light. The background light is almost totally noncoherent. Laser radiation is partially coherent, and can, in certain cases approach total coherence. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the science and technology necessary to understand, predict, and simulate the phenomena associated with intense dynamic loading of matter. The book begins with background information on shock wave phenomena in materials and how they are measured. This includes materials with strength, materials undergoing dynamic phase transformations, and material fracturing. The authors then cover the phenomena associated with detonations, where the chemical energy release of an explosive is an integral part of the hydrodynamics and describe the formation and application of the semi-empirical equation of state. They develop the numerical techniques for doing realistic computer simulations of complicated dynamical processes associated with impacts. The book closes with reviews simulations, compared with experiments, for a variety of dynamic loading events, including laser and electron beam interactions with metals, high explosive loading of iron, and impacts of cometary dust on the Vega space probe as it crossed the tail of Hailey's comet.

The quantum phase operator was even more problematic with the invention of the maser and laser in the 1950s and 1960s. This problem was not solved until the Pegg-Barnett formalism was developed in the 1980

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical studies were made of the dynamics of lasers perturbed by external magnetic fields and by oscillating piezoelectric crystals; a simple statistical property of the general dynamics was also explicitly exhibited. The description of the laser output was clarified by analyses of coherent states, of phase operators, and of photodetection processes. Studies of the excitations in the Fermi liquid helium three and of the motion of impurities through such a liquid were carried out. Theoretical analyses of level shifts in atoms produced by conducting walls or by intense nonresonant microwave fields were made; experimental efforts to measure such small shifts were initiated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of The Handbook of Humidity Measurement focuses on the review of devices based on optical principles of measurement such as optical UV, fluorescence hygrometers, optical and fiber-optic sensors of various types. Numerous methods for monitoring the atmosphere have been developed in recent years, based on measuring the absorption of electromagnetic field in different spectral ranges. These methods, covering the optical (FTIR and Lidar techniques), as well as a microwave and THz ranges are discussed in detail in this volume. The role of humidity-sensitive materials in optical and fiber-optic sensors is also detailed. This volume describes the reasons for controlling the humidity, features of water and water vapors, and units used for humidity measurement.
