Book excerpt: Owing to the advances of vacuum ultraviolet and ultrafast lasers and third generation synchrotron sources, the research on photoionization, photoelectrons, and photodetachment has gained much vitality in recent years. These new light sources, together with ingenious experimental techniques, such as the coincidence imaging, molecular beam, pulsed field ionization photoelectron, mass-analyzed threshold ion, and pulsed field ion pair schemes, have allowed spectroscopic, dynamic, and energetic studies of gaseous species to a new level of detail and accuracy. Profitable applications of these methods to liquids are emerging. This invaluable two-volume review consists of twenty-two chapters, focusing on recent developments in photoionization and photodetachment studies of atoms; molecules, transient species, clusters, and liquids.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a review of experimental results on photoionization of atoms and some molecules. There are some quantitative data on all the alkalis, magnesium, calcium and thallium and all rare gases except xenon. Results are given for the common gases: hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, CO, CO2, NO, NO2, H2O and CH4. Autoionization, excitation to a state above the ionization threshold followed by transition to the ionized state, can be an important factor. Often the broad autoionization lines mask the true continuum. There are some mass spectrometric measurements of photoionization products for most of these molecules.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the matter in our solar system, and, probably, within the whole universe, exists in the form of ionized particles. On the other hand, in our natural environ ment, gaseous matter generally consists of neutral atoms and molecules. Only under certain conditions, such as within the path oflightning or in several technical devices (e. g. gas discharges, rocket engines, etc. ) will some of the atoms and molecules be ionized. It is also believed that the chemistry of the earth's troposphere predomi nantly proceeds via reactions between neutral particles. (The complex system of atmospheric chemistry will be treated in one of the forthcoming volumes to this series. ) Why, then, are ions considered so important that hundreds oflaboratories all over the world (including some of the most prestigious) are involved in research pro grams on ions, covering many different facets, from biochemistry to physics? One may obtain as many different answers as there are research groups busy in this field. There is, however, one simple, common feature which makes it attractive to work with ions: since they carry one or more net elementary charges, they can easily be gui ded, focused or separated by appropriate electric and magnetic fields, and, last but not least, they can easily be detected. Apart from these advantages, which are welcome and appreciated by the researcher, the study of molecular ions can provide insight into very fundamental aspects of the general behavior of molecules.

Book excerpt: Photoabsorption, Photoionization, and Photoelectron Spectroscopy explores photoabsorption processes involving individual, isolated molecules in the wavelength or photon energy range from the ionization thresholds of molecules (usually in the vacuum ultraviolet region) through the soft and hard X-ray region and beyond the ""K edge."" The interaction between electromagnetic radiation and isolated molecules based on photoabsorption, photoionization, and photoelectron spectroscopy studies is described, along with the techniques for measurement of total and partial cross sections. This book is comprised of eight chapters and examines the decomposition of molecules and molecular ions as well as mildly excited (valence shell excitation) and highly excited (inner shell excitation) molecules. After providing a general theoretical background, it discusses certain classes of atoms and molecules and considers electromagnetic interactions with gases. The following chapters focus on photoabsorption below the first ionization limit; quasi-discrete states above the first ionization potential; and the ionization continuum. Total photoabsorption and photoionization cross sections for selected molecules are also considered, and the angular distribution of photoelectrons is analyzed. The various measurement techniques are described in the last chapter. This monograph will be of interest to radiation chemists, radiation physicists, photochemists, mass spectrometrists, and perhaps radiation biologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic and Molecular Processes focuses on radiative and collisional processes involving atoms or molecules, including photoionization, elastic and inelastic scattering of electrons, energy loss by slow electrons, excitation, ionization, detachment, charge transfer, elastic scattering, and chemical reactions. The selection first offers information on forbidden and allowed transitions, including forbidden transitions in diatomic molecular spectra; forbidden transitions in crystals; calculations of atomic line strengths; and measurements of atomic transition probabilities. The book also ponders on photoionization processes, photodetachment, and high temperature shock waves. The manuscript elaborates on electronic and ionic recombination, elastic scattering of electrons, and the motions of slow electrons in gases. The book also evaluates the theory of excitation and ionization by electron impact; measurement of collisional excitation and ionization cross sections; and spectral line broadening in plasmas. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in atomic and molecular processes.

Book excerpt: This review is devoted to a discussion of laboratory measurements of ionization, fluorescence, and photodetachment. The review is limited to molecules of aeronomic interest but excludes atoms. The section on photodetachment includes only work which has appeared since 1964. Current data are presented on photoionization cross sections, dissociative ionization cross sections, cross sections for the excitation of particular states of ions, relative vibrational excitation probabilities, photodetachment cross sections, angular distributions of electrons from photoionization and dissociative excitation of neutral molecules. Some suggestions are made for further work. (Author).

To mark this event a conference was held in the David Bates building at The Queen's University of Belfast on the 17th and 18th November 1986. At this conference ex-students and colleagues of Sir David, who are acknowledged world experts in their field of research, gave in depth reviews of a particular area of atomic and molecular physics. This book on the conference presents a unique account of recent studies in atomic and molecular processes in a wide range of research fields. This volume is dedicated to Sir David by his friends as a token of their affection and respect. It is hoped that it will provide a useful summary of current research in atomic and molecular physics and that it will also show the great contribution which Sir David made to atomic and molecular physics. This conference was supported by the USAF European Office of Aerospace Research and Development who we wish to thank for their generous support. Arthur E.
