Download or read book Phosphate Minerals written by J.O. Nriagu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on the geology, chemistry, and biochemistry of phosphorus generally takes its mineralogy for granted. The in cidental information on phosphate minerals given in these texts is often obsolescent and inaccurate. The few mineralogical texts that have dealt comprehensively with the phosphate minerals have now become outdated, and typically present the essential information in a manner unsuitable for nongeological readers. This volume is intended as a ready reference for workers who require good basic information on phosphate minerals or their synthetic equivalents. The topics covered should appeal to geologists and geochemists, lithologists, environmental scientists and engineers, chemists and biochemists who have any interest in the intricate world of phosphorus. The hard tissues of many vertebrates and the many pathological calcifications consist mostly of phosphate minerals. The precipita tion of these compounds also plays a major role in the ecological cycling of phosphorus, and occasionally even dominates the behavior of many trace metals in many geochemical and biolog ical systems. Indeed, many pegmatitic phosphate minerals have acquired some notoriety because of the rarer trace metals which they tend to accumulate. With the commercialization of phosphate fertilizers since the early part of the 19th century, phosphate minerals have assumed an important role in industrial chemistry and agriculture. Clearly, the study of phosphate minerals is important from the economic, agricultural, environmental and (human and animal) health viewpoint.

Book Synopsis A Systematic Classification of Nonsilicate Minerals by : James A. Ferraiolo
Download or read book A Systematic Classification of Nonsilicate Minerals written by James A. Ferraiolo and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Palache, Berman, and Frondel published two volumes of the seventh edition of James Dwight Dana's System of Mineralogy in 1944 and 1951. As with the sixth edition published in 1892, the seventh edition soon became the recognized authority in mineralogy. Greatly improved analytical techniques, crystal structure analysis, and other new technologies have led to a great increase in the number of new species and to the improvement of the data for older species. Over 400 new nonsilicate species have been approved by the International Mineralogical Association's Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names in the last eight years. For comparison, the seventh edition of Dana's System assigned classification numbers to 1043 accepted species, and briefly described another 227 poorly defined species. Of this total 69 have been discredited and 158 have been redefined. There have been over 1200 new nonsilicate species described in the last 30 years, and the growth continues. Obviously, with the number of nonsilicate species more than doubled since 1951, an updated classification is required. The preparation of this volume began in 1977, when a revised classification of the known phosphate, arsenate and vanadate minerals was prepared and privately circulated. This wa received favorably, so a revised classification of all nonsilicate minerals was undertaken; the results are given here"--P. v.

Book excerpt: We are pleased to present to our readers the Proceedings of the Fourth International Workshop on Phosphate and Other Minerals which was held in Strasbourg during June 22-24, 1979. It was hosted by Professor Henri Jahn, Professor of Medicine and Chief, Department of Nephrology at the University of Strasbourg. These Workshops have become a tradition in the scientific scene of mineral metabolism. The meetings have been providing a unique framework for close interaction between scientists from various disciplines, such as nephrologists, endocrinologists, bio chemists, nutritionists, and those dealing with bone metabolism. The Workshops also created a forum for the delivery of original information, as well as state-of-the-art presentations on exciting topics of current interest in this evergrowing field of phosphate and mineral homeostasis. The Fourth International Workshop was attended by three hundred scientists from 15 countries including Austria, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Holland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States of America. The topics discussed included those dealing with the renal handling of phos phate, calcium and magnesium, intermediary phosphate metabolism and phosphate homeostasis in health and disease. Two symposia were also presented: one dealt with nephrolithiasis and its rela tion to phosphate and the other with bone metabolism. In addition to 22 presentations by invited speakers, the Workshop provided 46 oral and 93 poster presentations selected from over 250 abstracts submitted to the Organizing Committee.
Book Synopsis Structural Classification of Minerals by : J. Lima-de-Faria
Download or read book Structural Classification of Minerals written by J. Lima-de-Faria and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-05-31 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a complete development of the new structural classification of minerals, which is based on the internal crystal structure, and therefore is its natural classification. Because of the large domain of the mineral kingdom, this book is divided in three volumes, where the minerals are ordered from the structurally simple to the more complex. This work will be of particular interest to teachers and research workers in Mineralogy, and also in Inorganic Crystal Structures in universities.
Download or read book Phosphates written by Matthew J. Kohn and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 48 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry represents the work of many authors whose research illustrates how the unique chemical and physical behavior of phosphate minerals permits a wide range of applications that encompasses phosphate mineralogy, petrology, biomineralization, geochronology, and materials science. While diverse, these fields are all linked structurally, crystal-chemically and geochemically. As geoscientists turn their attention to the intersection of the biological, geological, and material science realms, there is no group of compounds more germane than the phosphates.
