Download or read book Nineteenth-Century Science written by A.S. Weber and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2000-03-10 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-Century Science is a science anthology which provides over 30 selections from original 19th-century scientific monographs, textbooks and articles written by such authors as Charles Darwin, Mary Somerville, J.W. Goethe, John Dalton, Charles Lyell and Hermann von Helmholtz. The volume surveys scientific discovery and thought from Jean-Baptiste Lamarck’s theory of evolution of 1809 to the isolation of radium by Marie and Pierre Curie in 1898. Each selection opens with a biographical introduction, situating each scientist and discovery within the context of history and culture of the period. Each entry is also followed by a list of further suggested reading on the topic. A broad range of technical and popular material has been included, from Mendeleev’s detailed description of the periodic table to Faraday’s highly accessible lecture for young people on the chemistry of a burning candle. The anthology will be of interest to the general reader who would like to explore in detail the scientific, cultural, and intellectual development of the nineteenth-century, as well as to students and teachers who specialize in the science, literature, history, or sociology of the period. The book provides examples from all the disciplines of western science-chemistry, physics, medicine, astronomy, biology, evolutionary theory, etc. The majority of the entries consist of complete, unabridged journal articles or book chapters from original 19th-century scientific texts.

Download or read book Auguste Comte: Volume 3 written by Mary Pickering and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-14 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume continues to explore the life and works of Auguste Comte during his so-called second career. It covers the period from the coup d'état of Louis Napoleon in late 1851 to Comte's death in 1857. During these early years of the Second Empire, Comte became increasingly conservative and anxious to control his disciples. This study offers the first study of the tensions within his movement. Focusing on his second masterpiece, the Système de politique positive, and other important books, such as the Synthèse subjective, Mary Pickering not only sheds light on Comte's intellectual development but also traces the dissemination of positivism and the Religion of Humanity throughout many parts of the world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comte's Philosophy of the Sciences: Being an Exposition of the Principles of the Cours De Philosophie Positive of August Comte The following attempt to popularize the leading ideas of the greatest thinker of modem times consists of Two Parts, differently treated. The First Part contains the philosophy of the six Preliminary Sciences (Psychology being included for reasons there adduced); the Second Part contains Social Science, including the philosophy of History. In the former there is, besides an exposition of Comte's views, a large admixture of criticism, illustration, new speculation and fact; in the latter I have scarcely added anything, confining myself to an abridgment of his exposition, preserving his own terms, as far as practicable. The main reason of this difference in treatment lies in the subject itself. It was but just that Comte should be allowed to state in his own way, and without interruption, the principles of a Science he himself created. Book Synopsis Auguste Comte and John Stuart Mill on Sexual Equality by : Vincent Guillin
Download or read book Auguste Comte and John Stuart Mill on Sexual Equality written by Vincent Guillin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-08-31 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vincent Guillin uses the issue of sexual equality as a prism through which to examine important differences – epistemological, methodological and theoretical – between Auguste Comte and John Stuart Mill. He succeeds in showing how their differing conceptions of science and human nature influence and affect their respective approaches to philosophy and to the analysis of female (in)equality in particular. Guillin shines a bright searchlight into long-neglected aspects of both men’s thinking – for example, Mill’s proposal to construct an ‘ethology’, or science of character-formation, and Comte’s seemingly bizarre interest in phrenology – and the ways in which these shaped their views of women’s intellectual and political capacities. Guillin’s wide-ranging study examines both men’s major and minor works, their correspondence with one another, and the reasons for the final acrimonious break between two of the nineteenth century’s most original and important thinkers.
Book Synopsis The Science of Starving in Victorian Literature, Medicine, and Political Economy by : Andrew Mangham
Download or read book The Science of Starving in Victorian Literature, Medicine, and Political Economy written by Andrew Mangham and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-24 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science of Starving in Victorian Literature, Medicine, and Political Economy is a reassessment of the languages and methodologies used, throughout the nineteenth century, for discussing extreme hunger in Britain. Set against the providentialism of conservative political economy, this study uncovers an emerging, dynamic way of describing literal starvation in medicine and physiology. No longer seen as a divine punishment for individual failings, starvation became, in the human sciences, a pathology whose horrific symptoms registered failings of state and statute. Providing new and historically-rich readings of the works of Charles Kingsley, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Charles Dickens, this book suggests that the realism we have come to associate with Victorian social problem fiction learned a vast amount from the empirical, materialist objectives of the medical sciences and that, within the mechanics of these intersections, we find important re-examinations of how we might think about this ongoing humanitarian issue.
