Book excerpt: Movin' On Up takes a fun ride through the then-and-now of a great city and its ball club. The city and its team have cooked up a partnership as strong and as strange as scrapple and toast over the past 121 years. Since 1883, the Phillies have been on the move-at times slowly, many times glacially, and sometimes quickly. Movin' On Up layers the present on the past by revisiting the places the Fightin' Phils once called their new home. But Movin' On Up is really about people, past, and present-not only players, but others who help and helped Philly move on up to the fabulous sports town we know today. The journey rolls along humorous and poignant episodes, old and new, that have splashed Philly and its fan with the signature color that both fascinates and infuriates outsiders. As a result, the book probably reads more like an engineering report than anything else. If you are interested in what motivates men from 50 to 90 years of age to sacrifice their summer weekends to get back on the baseball diamond with all the associated aches and pains (physical as well as spousal), you may very well enjoy this book. Why would an adult lose 20 to 70 pounds in one year? Why would someone with multiple heart attacks and as many as eight stents in their coronary arteries play doubleheaders on a hot summer day in August (especially if he is a pitcher and a catcher)? Why would an intelligent adult with both hips and both knees replaced play baseball Saturday and Sunday, as well as one or two nights during the week? If you are interested in starting a league like that, you may also learn what it takes to make it happen. Bonus information? Check out why this league has been credited with leveling the playing field between men and women! Baseball truly is for the ages Enjoy.

Download or read book Music Wars written by John C. Hajduk and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-twentieth century, certain elements of the American popular music industry (publishers, recording companies, and broadcasters) began to redefine their product as something more than mere entertainment. This became evident in the arguments made by competing sides in a series of clashes that unfolded during that period, starting with the ASCAP-Radio dispute of 1941 and ending with the payola scandal in 1959. Although these disputes typically revolved around economic issues, in making their cases to the public the respective sides often asserted the significant role played by popular music in promoting core national values. While such rhetoric was basically self-serving, when set against the backdrop of major events like World War II, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Cold War, it resonated strongly with the public and helped convince many that popular music offered more to its audience than momentary diversion. Considering that the resolutions to these conflicts also tended to expand opportunities for previously marginalized styles and performers, notably African-Americans and rural southerners, it became natural to link popular music to ideas of social progress as well. This contributed to the creation of what could be called “rock and roll culture,” a coherent set of values related to concepts of youth, authenticity, sexual liberation, and social equality that emerged by the end of the 1950s. These traits became a prevalent part of American culture through the end of the twentieth century, with popular music seen a perhaps the most significant medium for expressing those values.

But every story has a side story that often has as much or more importance to the outcome of that story Many heroes never get their 15 minutes of fame and are forgotten in the shadows of the decades. My father has had many adventures that are not in this book, and that still need to be heard. My dad has a way of giving you just enough information and just enough humor that when he finally finishes his shorts, you just yearn for more. Maybe one day he will enlighten us with all the rest of his experiences that have made him a great man and made me want for such greatness.
Download or read book The Best of LCD written by Dave the Spazz and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2007-10-04 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named the best radio station in America by Rolling Stone magazine four years running, WFMU is considered the alternative radio station. LCD (Lowest Common Denominator), the station's program guide—begun in 1986 as a visual counterpart to WFMU’s oddball programming—was a wicked cocktail of satire, cultural news, alternative history, and provocative artwork that has earned its own devoted cult followers. It ceased publication in 1998 and its back issues have become treasured—and valuable—collector’s items. Dave the Spazz has spent the past twenty years hosting a weekly radio show on WFMU, self-publishing, freelance writing, making artwork, singing in punk-rock bands, and holding down one crummy job after another.

Book Synopsis Rock N Roll Gold Rush by : Maury Dean
Download or read book Rock N Roll Gold Rush written by Maury Dean and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monster Rock-n-Roll survey focuses on the songs and the vibrant personalities who create them, for college audiences and the general public. Dean published the world's first history of Rock in 1966. Here, in his ebullient style, he buzzes through piles of musical singles from the whole last half century, describing what is fun about each major and minor hit, pointing out what elements were exciting or new or significant in the development of musical styles. He relates some tantalizing tidbits about the earlier musical heritage that artists have drawn upon in crafting ever more amazing evolutions of rock music. This snappy, witty and informative album has universal appeal, doubling as a coffee-table trivia treasure and a college-level popular music history text. It includes hundreds of photos, chapter questions, and an extensive index. Reader-friendly and informationally complete, it covers soft rock, heavy metal, rhythm & blues, country rock and classic oldies, all with tender loving care, for the specialist and casual listener alike. Its mini-portraits of the artists who move so many hearts (and feet), the photos and the insightful sound bites get to the essence of each song and each musician's contribution to the music of our age. The single-song focus makes the book unique. It's a playlist for R'n'R professors and the general public, written with a collegiate vocabulary, tight organization and a respect for all. "Hearing Elvis for the first time was like busting out of jail." - Bob Dylan That being said, no one is being incited, here, to bust out of jail or to emulate the quixotic habits of rock stars. "There's nothing in here to hide from the kids, the clergy or grandma." Gold Rush can be used as a university or community college text, but most people will grab it for the sheer pleasure of reading about everyone's favorites. Great gift for Rock enthusiasts. Gold Rush is the first book of its kind to feature a celebration of the great single songs of the rock era and beyond. Gold Rush takes thousands of songs, spanning three centuries, and brings them back uniquely as if they came out just yesterday. Gold Rush unites the Anglo-American and later worldwide spirit of Rock and Roll in a tapestry of interconnected melodies and adventures. As Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide helps you select videos at Blockbuster, so Gold Rush is a powerful playlist for your music collection, with many new and fascinating photos of favorite stars. Gold Rush explains the most important stories behind the songs you picked to be played, the songs that 'went gold,' from the 1897 Alaska/Klondike Gold Rush to the #1 songs of today and beyond.
