Book Synopsis The Mammals of Luzon Island by : Lawrence R. Heaney
Download or read book The Mammals of Luzon Island written by Lawrence R. Heaney and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2016-04 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully illustrated guide to the complete mammalian biodiversity of the Philippines’ largest island. Revealing the astounding mammalian diversity found on the largest Philippine island, The Mammals of Luzon Island is a unique book that functions both as a field guide and study of tropical fauna. The book features 120 fully illustrated species profiles and shows how the mammals fit into larger questions related to evolution, ecology, and biogeography. Luzon’s stunning variety of mammals includes giant fruit-eating bats; other bats so small that they can roost inside bamboo stems; giant plant-eating rodents that look like, but are not, squirrels; shrews that weigh less than half an ounce; the rapidly disappearing Philippine warty pig; and the long-tailed macaque, Luzon’s only nonhuman primate. While celebrating Luzon’s remarkably rich mammal fauna, the authors also suggest conservation strategies for the many species that are under threat from a variety of pressures. Based on a century of accumulated data and fifteen years of intensive study, The Mammals of Luzon Island delivers a message that will appeal equally to scientists, conservationists, and ecologically minded travelers.
Book Synopsis Development in Place by : José C. M. van Santen
Download or read book Development in Place written by José C. M. van Santen and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In humanitys struggle to find timely solutions to environmental problems, it is easily forgotten that access to our shared spaces has never been equal. This collection deals with the landscapes and places of rural, urban, and wilderness areas in relation development. Contributions examine the complex relationship that human beings maintain with their rural and urban environments and with other species in various places and spaces. Nothing is taken for granted: colonial history, globalization, localization, hybrid relationships, colonial or "shared"architecture, religious backgrounds, and claims to equal access all fuse with policy strategies. This volume discusses these issues within the framework of developmental discourse, while asserting the rights of access to the global commons for all world citizens as well as other species.

Download or read book Tarsiers written by Patricia C. Wright and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tarsiiformes, or tarsiers for short, are a group of living species of special interest to primatologists because their combination of derived and ancient characters make them pivotal to understanding the roots of primate evolution. These small-bodied, nocturnal, solitary creatures resemble lower primates in their behavior but genetically, DNA evidence aligns them more closely with higher primates, such as monkeys, apes, and humans. These astounding creatures exhibit an ability found in no other living mammal3⁄4they can turn their heads 180 degrees in either direction to see both prey and predators. The world's only exclusive carnivorous primate, they eat live food (primarily insects, but the occasional vertebrate, such as lizards, snakes, or frogs will also do). This unique combination of behavior and anatomy makes the tarsier an especially interesting and controversial animal for study among primate behaviorists, evolutionists, and taxonomists, who view the tarsiers as "living fossils" that link past and present, lower and higher, primates in the long chain of evolutionary history. This new volume presents alternative and contrasting perspectives on the most debated questions that have arisen in tarsier studies. Top researchers bring together perspectives from anatomical, behavioral, genetic, and conservation studies in this new and exciting addition to the understanding of primate evolution. This book is a volume in the Rutgers Series on Human Evolution, edited by Robert Trivers, Lee Cronk, Helen Fischer, and Lionel Tiger.
Book Synopsis Smallholder Tree Growing for Rural Development and Environmental Services by : Denyse J. Snelder
Download or read book Smallholder Tree Growing for Rural Development and Environmental Services written by Denyse J. Snelder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-19 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent history reveals that both the large-scale reforestation projects of the 20th century have often been less successful than anticipated, and that tree growing by smallholders – as an alternative means to combat deforestation and promote sustainable land use – has received relatively little attention from the scientific and development communities. Taking a first step to addressing that balance, this collection of peer-reviewed papers adopts a comparative approach to explore the potential role that tree growing by farmers can play in sustainable forest management. The goal of this approach is to identify common threads and to start to develop a framework for future research and practice. Presenting case studies from the Philippines and comparative data from a number of Asian countries the book reveals that farmer tree growing has the potential to play a significant role in sustainable forest management, and discusses the surrounding issues which must be addressed in order to realise this potential. The book is primarily aimed at research scientists and graduate students interested in relevant aspects of forestry, agroforestry, agricultural diversity, natural resource management and conservation in agricultural landscapes, as well as those involved in sustainable development and international development studies. It will also provide a valuable reference for professionals, managers, consultants, policy makers and planners dealing with issues in sustainable development, natural resource management, land use change issues and participatory approaches to resource management.
