Book excerpt: Philip de László (1869-1937) was the pre-eminent portrait artist working in Britain between 1907 and 1937. He painted nearly 3,000 portraits, including kings and queens, four American presidents and countless members of the European nobility. There has been no biography of him since 1939, and this new account of both his life and his work draws on previously untapped material from the family archive of over 15,000 documents. It establishes the intrinsic importance of his art and re-positions him alongside his great contemporaries John Singer Sargent, Sir John Lavery and Giovanni Boldini. Born into a humble family in Budapest in 1869 he was ennobled by the Emperor Franz Joseph and from 1912 became known as Philip de László. From an early age he was driven by an unshakable vocation to succeed as an artist. He studied in Budapest, Munich and Paris, soon turning to portraiture as his vocation, and in 1894 received his first important commission from the royal family of Bulgaria, followed in 1899 by the Emperor Franz Joseph and, in 1900, Pope Leo XIII.

Book excerpt: Philip Alexius de Laszlo (1869-1937) was one of the most important portraitists of the early 20th century. Born in Hungary, he was trained in Munich and Paris and was soon receiving commissions from noble and royal families throughout Europe. Having married Lucy Guinness in 1900, in 1907 he moved from Vienna to England, where he had enormous success. Far less known are the wonderful portraits de Laszlo painted in the Netherlands over more than 30 years. By 1900 de Laszlo was renowned in the highest circles and his reputation inevitably reached the land of Rembrandt. De Laszszlo became very popular with Holland's cosmopolitan aristocratic and entrepreneurial families.Over the years, members of the Loudon and Deterding families, Cremer and Count Schimmelpenninck all sat to him. The portraits have remained in the families' private collections, and are here published for the first time. The book accompanies an exhibition of de Laszlo's Dutch portraits in the Van Loon house in the heart of Amsterdam, built in 1672, which was opened as a museum in 1973. It is a complete catalogue of de Laszlo's Dutch oeuvre as it is known today."

Book excerpt: Philip de László, following a meteoric rise to recognition in his native Hungary, settled in Britain in 1907 and became the leading portrait-painter in the country--taking over from Sargent. Marrying into the Guiness family, he painted members of almost every royal family in Europe and very many more of its Who's Who. This book, the previous edition of which accompanied the first retrospective exhibition of de László since his death in 1937, illustrates a rich and representative selection of his work, drawn from a range of private collections, and, aided by stunning color plates, reintroduces this well-known but little studied artist to a wider public.

Success depends upon the painters observation, his understanding and the ability to paint what he wishes. It is a personal affair. Much can be learned from those who have won for themselves the title of Master, but it is impossible to have our questions answered, first-hand, by great Masters who are no longer with us.

Book excerpt: To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Philip de László / László Fülöp (1869?1937), the Hungarian National Gallery, in collaboration with The de Laszlo Archive Trust, presents a display of 16 portraits from the artist?s mature period. This is an unique opportunity to see rarely exhibited masterpieces from prestigious private collections, with one of the key loans being the portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, when Duchess of York.0Philip de László was a prominent figure in the history of Hungarian art, and among the world?s foremost artists of his age, but is now little-known in his native country. He was indeed recognised in Hungary in his lifetime, being awarded gold medals and a title of nobility.0At the age of thirty, de László was already one of the wealthiest Hungarian painters and lived in a marvellous studio villa that he built in the vicinity of the capital?s City Park (Városliget). Following significant commissions in Austria and Germany, he moved to Vienna in 1903 with his wife, Lucy Guinness. He lived there with his growing family until 1907, when they finally settled in London, by which time he had numerous patrons in France and England too. 0Philip de László was the last European painter of the Grand Manner who indeed recorded the history of his era ? through portraits of the great figures of his time. His oeuvre constitutes the last great chapter of classical portraiture rooted in the late Renaissance, and the Stuart period in England. With the decline of the traditional role of aristocracy after World War II, this kind of representational, iconic portraiture los00Exhibition: Hundarian National Gallery, Budapest, Hungary (27.09.2019 - 05.01.2020).

Book excerpt: Was Philip de László a secret agent and was MI5’s source really as they claimed?Did an enemy spy really paint the portrait of the young Princess Elizabeth? In 1917, noted society portrait painter Philip de László, who painted such luminaries as the Pope, the Austrian emperor, King Edward VII and Prince Louis Battenberg, was subjected to a secret tribunal which interned him for trading with the enemy. At the outbreak of the First World War, de László had pulled strings to be naturalised as British, but in 1919 he was referred to a public committee to revoke his naturalisation. With the aid of skilled counsel, de László had the application overturned – however, newly discovered records show MI5 had evidence obtained from a top-secret source that alleged that he was supplying the enemy with important information on politics and industrial production. Crucially, the source’s anonymity prevented MI5 from presenting evidence to the tribunal, which has particular resonance in the contemporary War on Terror. In the only book to examine MI5’s secret evidence, Phil Tomaselli explores these allegations and reaches a shocking conclusion.

Descendants of the founder of the Guinness beer empire, they were the toast of 1920s high society, darlings of the press, with not a care in the world. But Felicity knows better. Sent to live with them as a child because her mother could no longer care for her, she grows up as the sisters’ companion. Both an outsider and a part of the family, she witnesses the complex lives upstairs and downstairs, sees the compromises and sacrifices beneath the glamorous surface. Then, at a party one summer’s evening, something happens that sends shock waves through the entire household. Inspired by a remarkable true story and fascinating real events, The Glorious Guinness Girls is an unforgettable novel about the haves and have-nots, one that will make you ask if where you find yourself is where you truly belong.

Book excerpt: In this pioneering study, the first substantial reassessment of the artist and his paintings to be written since 1901, Ruth Wood covers his personal and artistic life over a long career of more than seventy years. Working within the tradition of British landscape painting and influenced by his lifelong admiration of John Constable, Leader's extensive coverage of the British countryside and coastal scenes reveals the development of a distinctive and independent style. A master at exploiting the natural effects of water and light, the countryside after rain or the amber luminosity of the late afternoon sun, and these were features of his work which became his trademarks. Ruth Wood uncovers much hitherto unused material and corrects many errors and misconceptions about B.W. Leader and his work. Important sources include the artist's diaries, records of paintings sold, his letters, British and overseas exhibition catalogues, reviews and other archive material. Book excerpt: "From 1874 to 1882, John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) produced more than 200 paintings and water-colours aside from portraiture that chart his development as an artist. The breadth of his achievement includes figures in landscape settings, architectural studies, seascapes, subject paintings, and studies after old masters. From his powerful studies of models in Paris in the mid-1870s to his compelling paintings set in Venice in the early 1880s, the works published in this volume of the catalogue raisonne show the variety of his aesthetic responses." "Working in the studio and en plein air, Sargent travelled widely during the eight years covered in this volume, painting in Paris, Brittany, Capri, Spain, North Africa and Venice." "This is the first time that Sargent's early work has been mapped so comprehensively. With very few exceptions, this book illustrates all the pictures under discussion in colour. Each painting, including several which have never been published before, is documented in depth with full provenance, exhibition history and bibliography. Original research of primary documents and on-site investigations uncovered much new information, presented in critical discussions of subject matter, dating, style, and significance in the artist's career. The volume reproduces a wealth of Sargent's preliminary and related drawings and of comparative works by other artists." --Book Jacket.
