Book Synopsis New Land Marks by : Fairmount Park Art Association
Download or read book New Land Marks written by Fairmount Park Art Association and published by Hearst Books. This book was released on 2001 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What will we leave for future generations? What is it about a community that might inspire a work of art? Can that art give meaning to our public spaces?" "The artists and communities participating in the program New Land Marks: Public Art, Community, and Meaning of Place have been grappling with these challenging questions. The resulting book documents how a long-standing Philadelphia cultural organization - the Fairmount Park Art Association - initiated this program in order to plan and create unique public art projects with communities that volunteered to participate. Artists have been working with these communities to incorporate public art into ongoing community development, urban greening, civic history, streetscape enhancement, and other revitalization initiatives. The resulting proposals - which represent "works in process" - celebrate community identity, commemorate "untold" histories, inspire civic pride, respond to the local environment, and invigorate public spaces. This book is a guide for those interested in how communities and artists can examine the appearance and meaning of public spaces." "In addition to illustrating the work of the twenty-one artists participating in this innovative public art project, the book includes essays by noted authors Ellen Dissanayake, Thomas Hine, Lucy Lippard, and Penny Balkin Bach, Executive Director of the Fairmount Park Art Association, who also served as general editor."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Posters for the People by : Ennis Carter
Download or read book Posters for the People written by Ennis Carter and published by Quirk Books. This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lavishly illustrated volume amasses nearly 500 of the best and most striking posters designed by artists working in the 1930s and early 1940s for the government-sponsored Works Progress Administration, or WPA. Posters for the People presents these works for what they truly are: highly accomplished and powerful examples of American art. All are iconic and eye-catching, some are humorous and educational, and many combine modern art trends with commercial techniques of advertising. More than 100 posters have never been published or catalogued in federal records; they are included here to ensure their place in the history of American art and graphic design. The story of these posters is a fascinating journey, capturing the complex objectives of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal reform program. Through their distinct imagery and clear and simple messages, the WPA posters provide a snapshot of an important era when the U.S. government employed hundreds of artists to create millions of posters promoting positive social ideals and programs and a uniquely American way of life. The resulting artworks now form a significant historical record. More than a mere conveyor of government information, they stand as timeless images of beauty and artistic accomplishment.

Download or read book Anselm Kiefer written by Robin Vousden and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first site-specific outdoor public sculpture ever to be commissioned for the United States from Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) was unveiled in 2019 at the top of Rockefeller Center's Channel Gardens, facing Fifth Avenue. Titled 'Uraeus', the work consists of a gigantic open book with eagle's wings 30 feet in span, both made of lead, on top of a 20-foot-tall lead-clad stainless steel column. Clustered around the base of the column are further outsize lead books, while a large snake coils up the column. Lead is one of the artist's preferred materials for its soft, fluid properties traditionally associated with alchemical transformation, especially its second stage: dissolution. In Kiefer's mind alchemy is a symbol for the artist you have to destroy and then recreate. Uraeus extends his vocabulary of striking mythic forms, presented at an arresting new scale. It explores longtime motifs in his work that, in this context and contemporary moment, resonate in powerful new ways. Kiefer is the most prominent German artist of the generation born in or shortly after World War II, a figure of international standing who was recently awarded the J. Paul Getty Medal (2017).

Download or read book Vincent's Gardens written by Ralph Skea and published by Thames and Hudson. This book was released on 2011-03-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully produced gift book for gardeners and art lovers everywhere: a selection of Vincent van Gogh’s garden and flower paintings and drawings. Vincent van Gogh never owned a garden, but throughout his career he painted and drew outdoor spaces and natural objects frequently, both fascinated and stimulated by each location’s unique character. In this book Ralph Skea surveys the gardens that were most dear to Van Gogh—from the domestic havens of parsonage gardens in the Netherlands to the romance of Parisian city parks, from the blazing flower beds of Provence to the asylum gardens that provided the artist with seclusion and calm in his final months. Whether joyous paintings of plants in bloom or the intensely beautiful studies of lilacs, roses, irises, and pine trees that he produced in the asylum at Saint-Rémy, all the oils and sketches included here are monuments to the artist’s originality and poetic sensibility.
