Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phenomenal Stories #11 is our first Special Issue, focusing upon the editor's obsession with once-world-famous author Robert W. Chambers. The editor literally wrote the book - the only biography - about Chambers, a writer who influenced such luminaries as H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard and many others. This Special Issue features two of Chambers' classic horror stories - thankfully in the public domain - "The Yellow Sign" and "Repairer of Reputations." Also featured are cover art depicting Chambers by Carole A. Tomlinson and takes on Chambers from J.D. Hayes-Canell and Richard H. Nilsen, as well as the 2nd part of the 'The Darkness' from Carlos Rios. Don't worry, we're also continuing the Adirondack mystery story of Hal Johnson in 'An Old-Fashioned Shooting, ' as well as the science fiction novel 'Time: Book 01: Timenami' from Shawn M. Tomlinson. Phenomenal Stories is a modern-day tribute to the science fiction/horror/fantasy/speculative pulp magazines of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phenomenal Stories #10 features the first installment of the first Hal Johnson mystery novel, An Old-Fashioned Shooting. Richard H. Nilsen takes great joy in his easy-going P.I., makes the reader feel right at home with Hallum Johnson in the Adirondacks. To compliment An Old-Fashioned Shooting, Nilsen's column, The Write Stuff, this month focuses upon writing a mystery story, talks about some inspirations and gives some insight into Nilsen's writing method. The editor, too, stays focused upon writing and considers character development in stories. Dunces & Dragons sees columnist "Intrepid" stopping back at the office before moving on to his next assignment. This glimpse into the inner workings of the pan-dimensional, hyper-reality publishing house, perhaps, finally explains some of the situations J.D. Hayes Canell gets his alter ego into. Phenomenal Stories is a modern-day tribute to the science fiction/horror/fantasy/speculative pulp magazines of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s

Many more books are in the works as I write this in early December 2018. For example, I have published nine novels to date, and am writing nine more, with plans for some beyond that. The Shawn M. Tomlinson's Guide to Photography series has 29 titles in print, with another five or six nearly complete, and plans for 30 to 40 more. I'm also trying to rework and rearrange those books into omnibus editions by chronology and by theme.I never will get every book done I want to do, but it keeps me busy.I always planned on putting out a catalog of all the Zirlinson Books, but kept getting waylaid for one reason or another until now. This catalog is available as a print book in color. The color print book will be cost prohibitive for many people, so there likely will be a black and white version available, too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Association of Recorded Sound Collections Awards for Excellence Best Research in Record Labels–Certificate of Merit (2012) The Starday Story: The House That Country Music Built is the first book entirely dedicated to one of the most influential music labels of the twentieth century. In addition to creating the largest bluegrass catalogue throughout the 1950s and '60s, Starday was also known for its legendary rockabilly catalogue, an extensive Texas honky-tonk outpouring, classic gospel and sacred recordings, and as a Nashville independent powerhouse studio and label. Written with label president and co-founder Don Pierce, this book traces the label's origins in 1953 through the 1968 Starday-King merger. Interviews with artists and their families, employees, and Pierce contribute to the stories behind famous hit songs, including "Y'all Come," "A Satisfied Mind," "Why Baby Why," "Giddy-up Go," "Alabam," and many others. Gibson's research and interviews also shed new light on the musical careers of George Jones, Arlie Duff, Willie Nelson, Roger Miller, the Stanley Brothers, Cowboy Copas, Red Sovine, and countless other Starday artists. Conversations with the children of Pappy Daily and Jack Starns provide a unique perspective on the early days of Starday, and extensive interviews with Pierce offer an insider glance at the country music industry during its golden era. Weathering through the storm of rock and roll and, later, the Nashville Sound, Starday was a home to traditional country musicians and became one of the most successful independent labels in American history. Ultimately, The Starday Story is the definitive record of a country music label that played an integral role in preserving our nation's musical heritage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heroes and heroic discourse have gained new visibility in the twenty-first century. This is noted in recent research on the heroic, but it has been largely ignored that heroism is increasingly a global phenomenon both in terms of production and consumption. This edited collection aims to bridge this research void and brings together case studies by scholars from different parts of the world and diverse fields. They explore how transnational and transcultural processes of translation and adaptation shape notions of the heroic in non-Western and Western cultures alike. The book provides fresh perspectives on heroism studies and offers a new angle for global and postcolonial studies.
