Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores several key issues in beam phase space dynamics in plasma-based wakefield accelerators. It reveals the phase space dynamics of ionization-based injection methods by identifying two key phase mixing processes. Subsequently, the book proposes a two-color laser ionization injection scheme for generating high-quality beams, and assesses it using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. To eliminate emittance growth when the beam propagates between plasma accelerators and traditional accelerator components, a method using longitudinally tailored plasma structures as phase space matching components is proposed. Based on the aspects above, a preliminary design study on X-ray free-electron lasers driven by plasma accelerators is presented. Lastly, an important type of numerical noise—the numerical Cherenkov instabilities in particle-in-cell codes—is systematically studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of a wakefield accelerator in a high energy collider application is analyzed. In order to carry out this task, it is necessary to construct a strawman design system (no matter how preliminary) and build a code of the systems approach. A nonlinear dynamics map built on a simple theoretical model of the wakefield generated by the laser pulse (or whatever other method) is obtained and they employ this as a base for building a system with multi-stages (and components) as a high energy collider. The crucial figures of merit for such a system other than the final energy include the emittance (that determines the luminosity). The more complex the system is, the more opportunities the system has to degrade the emittance (or entropy of the beam). Thus the map gu ides one to identify where the crucial elements lie that affect the emittance. They find that a strong focusing force of the wakefield coupled with a possible jitter of the axis (or laser aiming) of each stage and a spread in the betatron frequencies arising from different phase space positions for individual particles leads to a phase space mixing. This sensitively controls the emittance degradation. They show that in the case of a uniform plasma the effect of emittance growth is large and may cause serious problems. They discuss possibilities to avoid it and control the situation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plasma wakefield accelerator (PWFA) is an accelerator concept based on utilizing a large amplitude plasma wave to accelerate relativistic electrons to ultra-high energy. The plasma wave represents the wave produced by a relativistic beam as it passes through a cold plasma. As the beam enters the plasma its space charge polarizes the background. When the beam tail passes the plasma is left with a large oscillating induced charge. The wakefields are derived assuming that the charge and current profiles of the driving bunch remain fixed. An estimate is made of the condition necessary for maintaining the profile of the driving bunch. The current required to result in an accelerating field approaching the wavebreaking limit is estimated. The beam dynamics for a small beam are simulated based on these estimates. The results of the studies reported indicate that the self-consistent transverse motion of the driving bunch makes pulse tailoring impossible to maintain. 4 refs., 5 figs. (LEW).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) and direct laser acceleration (DLA) are two different kinds of laser plasma electron acceleration mechanisms. LWFA relies on the laser-driven plasma wave to accelerate electrons. The interaction of ultra-short ultra-intensive laser pulses with underdense plasma leads the LWFA into a highly nonlinear regime (“plasma bubble regime”) that attracts particular interest nowadays. DLA accelerates electrons by laser electromagnetic wave in the ion channel or the plasma bubble through the Betatron resonance. This dissertation presents a hybrid laser plasma electron acceleration mechanism. We investigate its features through particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and the single particle model. The hybrid laser plasma electron acceleration is the merging concept between the LWFA and the DLA, so called laser wakefield and direct acceleration (LWDA). The requirements of the initial conditions of the electron to undergo the LWDA are determined. The electron must have a large initial transverse energy. Two electron injection mechanisms that are suitable for the LWDA, density bump injection and ionization induced injection, are studied in detail. The features of electron beam phase space and electron dynamics are explored. Electron beam phase space appears several unique features such as spatially separated two groups, the correlation between the transverse energy and the relativistic factor and the double-peak spectrum. Electrons are synergistically accelerated by the wakefield as well as by the laser electromagnetic field in the laser-driven plasma bubble. LWDA are also investigated in the moderate power regime (10 TW) in regarding the effects of laser color and polarization. It is found that the frequency upshift laser pulse has better performance on avoiding time-jitter of electron energy spectra, electron final energy and electron charge yield. Some basic characters that related to the LWDA such as the effects of the subluminal laser wave, the effects of the longitudinal accelerating field, the electron beam emittance, the electron charge yield and potentially applications as radiation source are discussed.

Book excerpt: Recent scientific and technical advances have made it possible to create matter in the laboratory under conditions relevant to astrophysical systems such as supernovae and black holes. These advances will also benefit inertial confinement fusion research and the nation's nuclear weapon's program. The report describes the major research facilities on which such high energy density conditions can be achieved and lists a number of key scientific questions about high energy density physics that can be addressed by this research. Several recommendations are presented that would facilitate the development of a comprehensive strategy for realizing these research opportunities.
