Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confessions of a Pharmacist is, in a sense my autobiography. As such, I have tried to tell the story of my varied career in the field. During my career, I have been a Director of Pharmacy in three hospitals, a Retail Pharmacist, an owner of a pharmacy, a Nuclear Pharmacist, a Floating Pharmacist and I even worked overseas in Saudi Arabia in an attempt to help bring their medical practices into the twentieth century. The book is intended to provide an inside look at the noble profession of pharmacy and I hope that, in writing it, I have helped demystify much of what goes on behind the counter. I believe that, as pharmacists, we make a significant contribution to patient care. Especially in the paradigm introduced by the University of Southern California known as “Clinical Pharmacy” and in which every pharmacy school in the country now educates its pharmacists. Pharmacists have a long way to go. For example, they need to come out of their shells and become better at universally educating patients in how to use medications, thus impacting patient care and helping make it more efficient and better for everyone. I hope the book enlightens and informs you and helps you, as a layperson, understand what really takes place when you entrust us to fill your prescriptions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This compendium of research on insider threats is essential reading for all personnel with accountabilities for security; it shows graphically the extent and persistence of the threat that all organizations face and against which they must take preventive measures." — Roger Howsley, Executive Director, World Institute for Nuclear Security High-security organizations around the world face devastating threats from insiders—trusted employees with access to sensitive information, facilities, and materials. From Edward Snowden to the Fort Hood shooter to the theft of nuclear materials, the threat from insiders is on the front page and at the top of the policy agenda. Insider Threats offers detailed case studies of insider disasters across a range of different types of institutions, from biological research laboratories, to nuclear power plants, to the U.S. Army. Matthew Bunn and Scott D. Sagan outline cognitive and organizational biases that lead organizations to downplay the insider threat, and they synthesize "worst practices" from these past mistakes, offering lessons that will be valuable for any organization with high security and a lot to lose. Insider threats pose dangers to anyone who handles information that is secret or proprietary, material that is highly valuable or hazardous, people who must be protected, or facilities that might be sabotaged. This is the first book to offer in-depth case studies across a range of industries and contexts, allowing entities such as nuclear facilities and casinos to learn from each other. It also offers an unprecedented analysis of terrorist thinking about using insiders to get fissile material or sabotage nuclear facilities. Contributors: Matthew Bunn, Harvard University; Andreas Hoelstad Dæhli, Oslo; Kathryn M. Glynn, IBM Global Business Services; Thomas Hegghammer, Norwegian Defence Research Establishment, Oslo; Austin Long, Columbia University; Scott D. Everyone, rich or poor, can now get them at a fraction of the cost of branded drugs. However, the allegations about their suspect quality, if true, pose questions of life-and-death for the unsuspecting consumers. Is it the messiah supplying the low-cost quality medicines across the globe or is it the precursor for the ultimate indigence of the unsuspecting millions consuming poor-quality generic medicines? In the absence of any evidence, it remains an inexplicable enigma. This book by a public policy practitioner of four decades who steered drug regulation in the Government of India unravels the truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for anyone actively pursuing enrollment in a school of pharmacy. However, currently enrolled students will appreciate its relevance, too. This book provides hard-to-find details to sharpen your sense of what is important to pharmacy school faculty. Such knowledge can smooth your transition into professional school, perhaps increase your scholastic performance, and ultimately help you land the perfect job in your field.During my tenure on the faculty of an accredited, 4-year public college of pharmacy in the south, I have had the fascinating role of interviewing prospective applicants, seeing first-year students on “day 1” of class, and watching graduates leave after commencement…and a smidgen of everything in between. In my role in the college, I teach, listen, and learn from our approximately 200 matriculating students each year. My additional role as a first-year student mentor gave me eye-opening insight about the minute details of students' adjustment to pharmacy school and how this affects their personal behaviors and scholastic performance. Furthermore, serving on the college's professional education committee allowed me to see how courses integrate to provide an education worthy of a PharmD. Finally, my work with the admissions committee informed me about student hurdles for entry into pharmacy school.Information is power, but inside information is the true coin of the realm. To this end, this book provides an intriguing glimpse into the professional school educational system that few see “behind the scenes”. Specifically, I demystify the pharmacy school admissions process and deconstruct the first, and often most demanding, year of the program. Then, the remaining years and beyond are discussed. Because students seldom receive such direct, honest feedback about college faculty, a generous description of the role of the instructor is given, along with expectations and general pet peeves. Facts about course materials and testing, which are notoriously difficult to obtain, are provided, too. Sources for information within this book chiefly include peer-reviewed scientific literature, coupled with a few personal observations. An index allows quick relocation of specific sections, and a bibliography lists all cited sources.Every pharmacy student begins school with high hopes and grand plans, seeking the most for his educational dollar. Graduates want the scientific knowledge and clinical skills to be perfectly poised as highly desirable potential employees, enjoying multiple job offers. Thus, this book was written to assist students to maximize their return on their relatively brief time spent in professional training.

Book excerpt: Drug development, the processes by which a chemical compound becomes a "drug" and is approved for sale by the FDA and European and Asian regulators, is not for the faint-of-heart or the shortsighted. Designing and monitoring studies, obtaining and analyzing scientific data, and reconciling clinical results against the ethical constraints and regulatory guidelines of government agencies, requires a complex interaction of in-house specialists and academic and commercial consultants worldwide. Scientific, technical, and tactical considerations play out in an environment where a balance must be struck between the often-competing interests of the corporation, its investors, government regulators, and the safety and well being of intended patients. All the while, dwindling patent protections impose an ever-contracting timeframe for success. Written to be accessible to a wide audience, NEW DRUGS provides a thorough, succinct, and practical understanding of these drug-development processes. If you're involved in the pharmaceutical industry, NEW DRUGS will provide scientific and management tools to increase the likelihood of regulatory approval at each phase of your compound's development. If you're a patient or consumer, NEW DRUGS will enable you to intelligently discuss medications with your health-care provider and empower you to make informed decisions at the pharmacy. If your portfolio, rather than your health, makes you an interested observer of the fortunes of this critical sector of the US economy, NEW DRUGS will help you to decode press releases and annual reports, so that you can recognize and invest in well-run companies with promising products.
