Book excerpt: Dr. Evelyn Carter stood in the heart of the Advanced Quantum Research Institute, surrounded by a symphony of humming machinery and blinking lights. Her breath caught as she stared at the data on her screen. The anomaly was unlike anything she'd ever seen-a ripple in the fabric of reality, an echo from the depths of the quantum abyss.

Book excerpt: As Freud predicted, there has always been great anxiety about the place of psychoanalysis in contemporary life, particularly in relation to its ambiguous and complicated relationship to the realm of science. There is also a long history of widespread resistance, in both academia and medicine, to anything associated with the world of the supernatural; very few people, in their professional lives, at least, are willing to admit a serious interest in occult phenomena. As a result, paranormal traces have all but vanished from the psychoanalytic process - though not without leaving a residue. This residue remains, the author argues, in the acceptably "clinical" guise of projective identification, a concept first formulated by Melanie Klein, and widely used in contemporary psychoanalysis to suggest a different variety of transference and transference-like phenomena between patient and analyst that seem to occur outside the normal range of the sensory process.

This is an account of adventure and deep reflection accompanied by a selection of the author's stunning colour photographs. After first visiting the Trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh in 1985, he returned again and again, seeking to catch a glimpse of the phantom of the Himalayas - the elusive snow leopard. During these visits he became enthralled with the unique culture of this ancient mountain kingdom, one of the oldest enclaves of Buddhism. The phantom cat itself becomes, at turns, Eduard's quarry, nemesis, obsession, and finally, in a surprising twist of destiny, his teacher.

What can you reliably know? Is death nothingness? Does God exist? This book examines such questions, from which two distinct world views arise and are surveyed. The book examines reality, how our choices determine our character and final destination, knowledge, and limitations of science; surveys relativity, quantum physics, life, evolution, and mans uniqueness; and looks at realitys material and immaterial aspects. Genesis is reviewed and shown to have scientific meaning. The book ends by proposing two very different paths that one can choose to follow.

Book excerpt: Ann Banfield - professor in the Department of English at the University of California, Berkeley - is best known for her groundbreaking contributions to narrative theory. Working within the paradigm of generative linguistics, she argued that the language of fiction is characterized by two «unspeakable sentences», i.e., sentences that do not properly occur in the spoken language: the sentence of «pure narration» and the sentence of «represented speech and thought» (style indirect libre or erlebte Rede). More recently, Banfield offered a major reconsideration of the novels of Virginia Woolf and modernism in light of the philosophy of knowledge developed by G. E. Moore and Bertrand Russell, and appropriated by Roger Fry in his critical analyses of impressionism and post-impressionism. The essays gathered here pay tribute to Banfield by addressing those disciplines and topics most closely related to her work, including: narrative theory and pragmatics, the philosophy of language and knowledge, generative syntax, meter and phonology, and modernism.

Book excerpt: The Covid-19 Pandemic has brought forth global anxiety about linkages between the environment and society at a fundamental structural level. Earthly Order: How Natural Laws Define Human Life provides an accessible exposition of the latest foundational knowledge on how natural and social systems science can inform planetary crises. Humanity has either tried to conquer or capitulate to natural order, whereas we should be seeking to understand latent structures and patterns that permeate all systems and develop an "earthly order," that is socially functional and sustainable. Current debates in politics often present what should constitute a "world order" while scientists have wrestled with what are fundamental conditions of "natural order." Author Saleem H. Ali provides a readable synthesis of these debates with practical guidance for the public with a host of current examples around environmental decision-making by consumers, the government and industry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Master Set Universe is an in-depth investigation, through the realms of Quantum Mechanics and Mathematics, of the concept of the Master Set, an all-encompassing 'every thing', entirely self-referential in nature. Maxwell Katz makes use of a number of analogies to illustrate his themes. The way in which the Master Set projects the illusion of a 'mechanical world', for example, is likened to a computer game, which plays out certain events although, at the same time, it contains infinite possibilities within itself. Meaning and truth are analysed in the light of this Projective Realm. There are no absolutes; meaning is simply a way that we define ourselves, giving us perspective in the way we perceive all 'other'. The overriding feature of the Master Set Universe is its Oneness. From it comes every thing; it is every thing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A world-renowned philosopher’s genre-defying exploration of the mystery of consciousness In a blossoming garden located far outside all worlds, a group of aging Greek gods have gathered to discuss the nature of existence, the mystery of mind, and whether there is a transcendent God from whom all things come. Turning to Eros, Psyche asks, “Do you see this flower, my love?” So begins David Bentley Hart’s unprecedented exploration of the mystery of consciousness. Writing in the form of a Platonic dialogue, he systematically subjects the mechanical view of nature that has prevailed in Western culture for four centuries to dialectical interrogation. Powerfully rehabilitating a classical view in which mental acts are irreducible to material causes, he argues through the gods’ exchanges that the foundation of all reality is spiritual or mental rather than material. The structures of mind, organic life, and even language together attest to an infinite act of intelligence in all things that we may as well call God. Engaging contemporary debates on the philosophy of mind, free will, revolutions in physics and biology, the history of science, computational models of mind, artificial intelligence, information theory, linguistics, cultural disenchantment, and the metaphysics of nature, Hart calls readers back to an enchanted world in which nature is the residence of mysterious and vital intelligences. He suggests that there is a very special wisdom to be gained when we, in Psyche’s words, “devote more time to the contemplation of living things and less to the fabrication of machines.&rdquo

Book excerpt: Is it that with grace, humor and style that we will describe all the realms of life, as well as answer the ultimate questions, some in seriously comedic adventures? We will it. Is the cause of the universe itself causeless? Yes, and we will learn why, just be-cause. Did the laws of the universe come from Nothing? Just about, but there is some further ado about near 'nothing'. Does everything amount to a total Nothing except for the quantum fluctuations of uncertainty? Certainly. Will we disprove the Supernatural? Naturally. What does the sum total of the information content of Everything add up to? Nothing. Nil. Null. Not a thing. Do we really learn Everything here, such as what is the origin of the universe and also the explanation of that which produced it. Yes. Really? Yes, for sure; you can count on it. Are any other of your books kind of like this one? Yes, see 'Butterflies At the Edge of Forever'.
