Book Synopsis Horror Films of 2000-2009 by : John Kenneth Muir
Download or read book Horror Films of 2000-2009 written by John Kenneth Muir and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-10-12 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horror films have always reflected their audiences' fears and anxieties. In the United States, the 2000s were a decade full of change in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the contested presidential election of 2000, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. These social and political changes, as well as the influences of Japanese horror and New French extremism, had a profound effect on American horror filmmaking during the 2000s. This filmography covers more than 300 horror films released in America from 2000 through 2009, including such popular forms as found footage, torture porn, and remakes. Each entry covers a single film and includes credits, a synopsis, and a lengthy critical commentary. The appendices include common horror conventions, a performer hall of fame, and memorable ad lines.

Download or read book Richard Wright written by Toru Kiuchi and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this minutely detailed, comprehensive chronology, Toru Kiuchi and Yoshinobu Hakutani document the life in letters of the greatest African American writer of the twentieth century. The author of Black Boy and Native Son, among other works, Wright wrote unflinchingly about the black experience in the United States, where his books still influence discussions of race and social justice. Entries are documented by Wright's journals, articles, and other works published and unpublished, as well as his letters to and from friends, associates, writers and public figures. Part One covers Wright's life through the year 1946, the period in which he published his best-known work. Part Two covers the final fifteen years of his life in exile, a prolific period in which he wrote two novels, four works of nonfiction, and four thousand haiku. Each part begins with a historical and critical introduction.

Download or read book Return Engagements written by Viet Lê and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Return Engagements artist and critic Việt Lê examines contemporary art in Cambodia and Việt Nam to rethink the entwinement of militarization, trauma, diaspora, and modernity in Southeast Asian art. Highlighting artists tied to Phnom Penh and Sài Gòn and drawing on a range of visual art as well as documentary and experimental films, Lê points out that artists of Southeast Asian descent are often expected to address the twin traumas of armed conflict and modernization, and shows how desirable art on these themes is on international art markets. As the global art market fetishizes trauma and violence, artists strategically align their work with those tropes in ways that Lê suggests allow them to reinvent such aesthetics and discursive spaces. By returning to and refashioning these themes, artists such as Tiffany Chung, Rithy Panh, and Sopheap Pich challenge categorizations of “diasporic” and “local” by situating themselves as insiders and outsiders relative to Cambodia and Việt Nam. By doing so, they disrupt dominant understandings of place, time, and belonging in contemporary art.

Book Synopsis Diary of a Confederate Soldier by : John S. Jackman
Download or read book Diary of a Confederate Soldier written by John S. Jackman and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War journal of John Jackman is one of the richest and most literate of all Confederate soldier narratives to survive the war. It is also the only surviving war period diary of a soldier in the famed First Kentucky or orphan Brigade. Jackman follows his brigade across the war-torn South, from Shiloh to Vicksburg, to Baton Rouge, through all the battles for Tennessee, and on through the Atlanta Campaign and the resistance to Sherman's march to the sea. Jackman is an observer right up to the end, when Jefferson Davis and his fleeing cabinet meet for the last time at Washington, Georgia. Written with wit and insight, and unfailingly entertaining. Jackman's journal catches the spirit of the common soldier of the Confederacy in camp and field, as well as some of the excitement and confusion of battle. His opinions are frank, his prejudices few, and his warm and generous nature show through in his remarks on his fellow orphans. Especially significant for its behind-the-lines vignettes of the Army of Tennessee, this journal is one of the most important soldier journals to come from that troubled yet fascinating army.
