Book excerpt: Since she left the wolves who raised her to cross over the Iron Mountains, Firekeeper’s pack has expanded to include a diverse assortment of creatures – human and not. When the wolf-woman receives a desperate call for help from the jaguar, Truth, Firekeeper – Blind Seer, as ever, at her side – races to Truth’s aid. Over a year prior, Truth sacrificed her sanity in a valiant effort to keep Firekeeper alive. Now there may be a way for Truth to reunite her fragmented mind with her failing body – but the jaguar needs Firekeeper to open a door, that is not quite a door, if that is to happen. How to release Truth may be only the beginning of Firekeeper and Blind Seer’s problems, for there are hints that an ancient power may be released along with the jaguar – a power that uses living creatures as playing pieces, and who has more than a little interest in Firekeeper herself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the country’s most picturesque cities and conveniently located just a few hours’ drive from Hollywood, San Francisco became the most frequently and extensively filmed American city beyond the production hubs of Los Angeles and New York in the three decades after World War II. During those years, the cinematic image of the city morphed from the dreamy beauty of Vertigo to the nightmarish wasteland of Dirty Harry, although San Francisco itself experienced no such decline. This intriguing disconnect gives impetus to Hollywood in San Francisco, the most comprehensive study to date of Hollywood’s move from studio to location production in the postwar era. In this thirty-year history of feature filmmaking in San Francisco, Joshua Gleich tracks a sea change in Hollywood production practices, as location shooting overtook studio-based filming as the dominant production method by the early 1970s. He shows how this transformation intersected with a precipitous decline in public perceptions of the American city, to which filmmakers responded by developing a stark, realist aesthetic that suited America’s growing urban pessimism and superseded a fidelity to local realities. Analyzing major films set in San Francisco, ranging from Dark Passage and Vertigo to The Conversation, The Towering Inferno, and Bullitt, as well as the TV show The Streets of San Francisco, Gleich demonstrates that the city is a physical environment used to stage urban fantasies that reveal far more about Hollywood filmmaking and American culture than they do about San Francisco.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Best American Short Plays). For more than 70 years, The Best American Short Plays has been the standard of excellence for one-act plays in America. From its inception, it has identified cutting-edge playwrights Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee, and others who have gone on to establish award-winning careers. The Best American Short Plays 2013-2014 takes a look at our changing times. "Uncertain" seems to be the watchword of today's world, full of surprises, shocks, and even a few delights. Uncertainty brings with it fear and insecurity, as well as nostalgic longing for the good old days, but for some, uncertainty means opportunity and along with it the prospect of change for the better. This volume explores various experiences of uncertainty and includes a series of nine plays gathered by Daniel Gallant, entitled Nine Signs of the Times , as well as short plays by Neil LaBute, John Guare, Laura Shaine Cunningham, Daniel F. Levin, Quincy Long, Halley Feiffer, Caridad Svich, and Clay McLeod Chapman. This collection will be complemented by a range of plays from around the country by playwrights likewise observing and digesting the signs of the times. Together the plays of this volume work as a time capsule, capturing the fears and longings of a world on the verge and in the midst of big changes, hopefully for the better but quite possibly for the worse.

And more importantly, can he have a future with a genie?

Book excerpt: This original account is based on the author’s experiences with incarcerated girls participating in Girl Time, a program created by a theatre company that conducts playwriting and performance workshops in youth detention centers. In addition to examining the lives of these and other formerly incarcerated girls, Girl Time shares the stories of educators who dare to teach children who have been “thrown away” by their schools and society. The girls, primarily African American teens, write their own plays, learn ensemble-building techniques, explore societal themes, and engage in self analysis as they prepare for a final performance. The book describes some of the girls and their experiences in the program, examines the implications of the school-to-prison pipeline, and offers ways for young girls to avoid incarceration. Readers will learn how the lived experiences of incarcerated girls can inform their teaching in public school classrooms and the teaching of literacy as a civil and human right. “Winn brings to mind theories of play and performance that rarely enter the professional preparation for teachers at the secondary level.” —Shirley Brice Heath, Stanford University “In the brilliant hands of Maisha T. Winn, Girl Time harvests seeds and stories about girls living in juvenile settings. . . . Penned in the ink of love, awe, despair, and dignity, the volume swings between documentary and possibility.” —From the Afterword by Michelle Fine, Graduate Center, CUNY

Book excerpt: Proposes that cinematic time is not a fixed idea, but a dynamic exchange between film and viewer. Doing Time addresses two areas of interest in recent film study—film temporality and film philosophy—to propose an innovative theorization of cinematic time that sees it as a dynamic process of engagement, or something we do as viewers. This active relation to cinematic time, which discloses a film’s temporal character, is called its “timeliness.” Here it is traced across a range of fascinating case studies from Hollywood and the global art cinema, uncovering each film’s characteristic way of “doing time.” Throughout, the ambiguities of filmic time are held as powerful attractions as they modulate film viewing: such pauses, gaps, repetitions, and stretches of time illuminate a living field that extends from viewing activity. Drawing on the writings of French film critic and theorist André Bazin, as well as the phenomenology of Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Lee Carruthers forwards a claim about the value of cinematic time for thinking. She also raises the tasks of film analysis and interpretation to renewed visibility. By prioritizing the viewer’s experience of filmic temporality, and offering a rich vocabulary for describing this exchange, Carruthers articulates a new sphere of theoretical inquiry that invites film viewers (and readers) to participate. “Lee Carruthers makes an original and powerful argument about the importance of ‘timeliness,’ providing a much-needed alternative approach to that of Deleuze to thinking seriously about the temporality of cinema. Her chapters, including one on The Tree of Life, are masterful criticism.” — William Rothman, author of Must We Kill the Thing We Love? Emersonian Perfectionism and the Films of Alfred Hitchcock
