Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eastern Mediterranean is one of the world's most vibrant and vital commercial centres and for centuries the region's cities and ports have been at the heart of East-West trade. Taking a full and comprehensive look at the region as a whole rather than isolating individual cities or distinct cultures, Cities of the Mediterranean offers a fresh and original portrait of the entire region, from the 16th century to the present. In this ambitious inter-disciplinary study, the authors examine the relationships between the Eastern Mediterranean port cities and their hinterlands as well as inland and provincial cities from many different perspectives - political, economic, international and ecological - without prioritising either Ottoman Anatolia, or the Ottoman Balkans, or the Arab provinces in order to think of the Eastern Mediterranean world as a coherent whole. Wide-ranging in scope, Cities of the Mediterranean explores diverse topics, weaving together history, sociology, geography, cartography, politics and economics. Early chapters examine the impact of the 'Little Ice Age'; the global economy's shift from the Mediterranean to Antwerp and Amsterdam; early European perceptions of the Eastern Mediterranean; 19th-century harbour building practices and their impact on the cities; and the connections between Alexandria, Izmir and Thessalonica and their vast and diverse hinterlands. The book also explores political radicalism in Turkey and elsewhere as well as the illegal trade networks that linked the Balkans and Adriatic with the Mediterranean and the introduction of new technologies that led to the faster transport of people, goods and information. Through its penetrating analysis of the various networks that connected the ports and towns of the Mediterranean and their inhabitants throughout the Ottoman period, Cities of the Mediterranean presents the region as a unified and dynamic community and paves the way for a new understanding of the subject.
Book Synopsis Re-storying Mediterranean Worlds by : Angela Biancofiore
Download or read book Re-storying Mediterranean Worlds written by Angela Biancofiore and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book invites readers to think of Mediterranean cultures as interconnected worlds, seen in light of how they evolve, disappear, are reborn and perpetually transform. This perspective intends to build bridges between the Northern and Southern coasts of the sea in order to broaden and deepen our understanding of current evolutions in Mediterranean worlds, at the cultural, literary, artistic and geopolitical levels. As Paul Valéry suggested, we can consider this plural space from the perspective of the intense cultural, economic and human exchanges which have always characterized the Mare Nostrum. We can also consider Mediterranean worlds within an open enactive process, deeply exploring their evolution between nature and culture, examining the natural environment and the transforming relationships between humans and non-humans. The writers and researchers in Re-storying Mediterranean Worlds call for a dialog between the two coasts in order to connect what has been broken. In this volume, they highlight an intercultural and creolized conscience, traversing the Mediterranean worlds including Italian, French and Tunisian cultures, but also migrations from, to and within the region and transcending any idea of communitarian withdrawal. These essays express the urgent need to shift from an understanding of migration as suffering to the notion that mobility is an unalienable right, building foundations for a new idea of global citizenship.

Il est essentiel d'organiser la cohabitation entre l'homme et l'aléa incendie de forêts par l'intermédiaire d'outils d'aménagement du territoire à différentes échelles géographiques. Book Synopsis Compromise Planning : A Theoretical Approach from a Distant Corner of Europe by : Louis C. Wassenhoven
Download or read book Compromise Planning : A Theoretical Approach from a Distant Corner of Europe written by Louis C. Wassenhoven and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-28 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the book is to elaborate a planning theory which departs from the plethora of theories which reflect the conditions of developed countries of the North-West. The empirical material of this effort is derived from a country, Greece, which sits on the edge between North-West and South-East, at the corner of Europe. No doubt, there is extensive international literature on planning theory in general from a bewildering variety of viewpoints. The interested professional or student of urban and regional planning is certainly aware of the dizzying flood of books, articles and research reports on planning theory and of their never-ending borrowing of obscure concepts from more respectable scientific disciplines, from mathematics to philosophy and from physics to economics, human geography and sociology. He or she probably observed that there is a growing interest in theoretical approaches from the viewpoint of the so-called “Global South”. The author of the present book has for many decades faced the impasse of attempting to transplant theories founded on the experience of the North-West to countries with a totally different historical, political, social and geographical background. He learned that the reality that planners face is unpredictable, patchy, and responsive to social processes, frequently of a very pedestrian nature. Planning strives to deal with private interests which planners are keen to envelop in a single “public interest”, which is extremely hard to define. The behaviour of the average citizen, far from being that of the neoclassical model of the homo economicus, is that of an individual, a kind of homo individualis, who interacts with the state and the public administration within a complex web of mutual dependence and negotiation. The state and its administrative apparatus, i.e., the key-determinants and fixers of urban and regional planning policy, bargain with this individual, offer inducements, exemptions, derogations and privileges, deviate unhesitatingly from their grand policy pronouncements, but still defend the rationality and comprehensiveness of the planning system they have legislated and operationalized. It is by and large a successful modus vivendi, but only thanks to a constant practice of compromise. Hence, the term compromise planning, which the author coined as an alternative to all the existing theoretical forms of planning. This is the sort of planning, and of the accompanying theory, with which he deals in this book. It is the outcome of experience and knowledge accumulated in a long personal journey of academic teaching in England and Greece, research, and professional involvement.

Book Synopsis Between Sea and City by : Sabine Lebesque

Book excerpt: "On the occasion of 'The Cultural Capital of Europe - Thessaloniki 1997' eight prominent architects were asked to design piers along the sea front of Thessaloniki. The piers, situated along the stretch of waterfront between the old port and the airport, will serve as boat terminals for a new public transport system. These piers will give both a new impulse to the currently run-down coastline and also improve the city's transport infrastructure." "Aldo and Hannie van Eyck, Finn Geipel (Lab F AC), Mario Botta, Alvaro Siza, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Enric Miralles, Rem Koolhaas (OMA), Giancarlo De Carlo: architects from different countries and different generations took up this challenge, and in their diversity they show what can be imagined with this distinctive structure. They designed not only the jetties, but also adjoining facilities such as pavilions, a cinema, places to stroll and sit, a swimming pool, a cafe, etc." "This publication provides an overview of all eight projects. The introductory essay outlines the city's urban conditions, the significance of this development for Thessaloniki and the nature of the architectural assignment. Each project is extensively documented with plans, sections, elevations and sketches, and is accompanied by an explanatory text."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
