Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The small Hampshire town of Petersfield saw little direct conflict during the Second World War, yet its story reflects all the anxieties and concerns of Britain's inhabitants during that period: food shortages, evacuees, blackout restrictions, family losses - and the characteristically phlegmatic approach to these problems by all concerned. David Jeffery's research has uncovered some remarkable stories of individuals caught up in these world-changing events, and a series of interviews with over fifty long-time residents vividly brings back to life the everyday realities and intense atmosphere of these troubled times. This evocative record of the effect of the war will serve as a memorial to an exceptional period in Petersfield's history.

Book Synopsis The English Civil War by : Peter Gaunt
Download or read book The English Civil War written by Peter Gaunt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir, God hath taken away your eldest son by a cannon shot. It brake his leg. We were necessitated to have it cut off, whereof he died.' In one of the most famous and moving letters of the Civil War, Oliver Cromwell told his brother-in-law that on 2 July 1644 Parliament had won an emphatic victory over a Royalist army commanded by King Charles I's nephew, Prince Rupert, on rolling moorland west of York. But that battle, Marston Moor, had also slain his own nephew, the recipient's firstborn. In this vividly narrated history of the deadly conflict that engulfed the nation during the 1640s, Peter Gaunt shows that, with the exception of World War I, the death-rate was higher than any other contest in which Britain has participated. Numerous towns and villages were garrisoned, attacked, damaged or wrecked. The landscape was profoundly altered. Yet amidst all the blood and killing, the fighting was also a catalyst for profound social change and innovation. Charting major battles, raids and engagements, the author uses rich contemporary accounts to explore the life-changing experience of war for those involved, whether musketeers at Cheriton, dragoons at Edgehill or Cromwell's disciplined Ironsides at Naseby (1645).
Book Synopsis A Military History of the English Civil War by : Malcolm Wanklyn
Download or read book A Military History of the English Civil War written by Malcolm Wanklyn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Military History of the English Civil War examines how the civil war was won, who fought for whom, and why it ended. With a straightforward style and clear chronology that enables readers to make their own judgements and pursue their own interests further, this original history provides a thorough critique of the reasons that have been cited for Parliament's victory and the King's defeat in 1645/46. It discusses the strategic options of the Parliamentary and Royalist commanders and councils of war and analyses the decisions they made, arguing that the King’s faulty command structure was more responsible for his defeat than Sir Thomas Fairfax's strategic flair. It also argues that the way that resources were used, rather than the resources themselves, explain why the war ended when it did.

Book Synopsis The Revolutionary War in the Hackensack Valley by : Adrian Coulter Leiby
Download or read book The Revolutionary War in the Hackensack Valley written by Adrian Coulter Leiby and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After November 1776, the Hackensack Valley--located in northeastern New Jersey and Rockland County, New York--lay between the invading British army in New York City and the main Continental defense forces in the Hudson Highlands. Jersey Dutch patriot and Tory troops carried on a five-year war of neighbors between the lines, while the grand armies of Britain and America maneuvered on either side of them for a chance to strike a blow at the other. Adrian Leiby offers an exciting narrative of the people of Dutch New Jersey and New York during this conflict. Historians will find colorful details about the Revolutionary War, and genealogists will find much previously unpublished material on hundreds of men and women of Dutch New Jersey and New York in the 1700s.

Book Synopsis Hungarian Arms and Armour of World War Two by : Peter Mujzer
Download or read book Hungarian Arms and Armour of World War Two written by Peter Mujzer and published by Key Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the world wars, Hungary was a relatively small country aiming to recover territory lost because of World War One, and its Army was trained, equipped, armed and prepared to fight with its neighbours, to this end. At the outset of World War Two, Hungarian involvement in the war was minimal. Then, suddenly, this small country found itself in a total war with the Allied nations, primarily the Soviet Union. Although in 1941, this war was remote, in 1944–45 it arrived in Hungary, crushing the kingdom. This book gives a brief history of the Hungarian Army (Honvédség), focusing on the main armament of the land forces: armored vehicles, artillery pieces, infantry weapons and motor vehicles. The Hungarian Army had an interesting mix of weaponry and equipment inherited from the Austro-Hungarian Army, purchased from Germany, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland and produced by the Hungarian war industry, based on licences or its own designs. The 170 illustrations include 18 original color photos and 18 color profiles, skilfully painted by Tamás Deák.
