Book Synopsis A Feeling of History by : Peter Zumthor
Download or read book A Feeling of History written by Peter Zumthor and published by Scheidegger and Spiess. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While he was working to complete the Allmannajuvet Zinc Mine Museum in southern Norway in 2016, Swiss architect Peter Zumthor asked Norwegian architectural historian Mari Lending to engage in a dialogue about the project. In meandering, impressionistic style, and drawing on their favorite writers, such as Johann Peter Hebel, Stendhal, Nabokov, and T. S. Eliot, their exchanges explore how history, time, and temporalities reverberate across Zumthor's oeuvre. Looking back, Zumthor ponders on how a feeling of history has informed his attempts at emotional reconstruction by means of building, from architectural interventions in dramatic landscapes to his design for the redevelopment of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which conceived the building on a suitably grand urban scale. This small, beautifully designed book records the conversation between Zumthor and Lending, accompanied by photographs taken by the renowned Swiss architectural photographer H l ne Binet. The resulting book is a surprisingly revelatory view of one of the most interesting and restlessly creative architects of our era.

Book Synopsis Peter Zumthor Therme Vals by : Sigrid Hauser
Download or read book Peter Zumthor Therme Vals written by Sigrid Hauser and published by Scheidegger Und Spiess Ag Verlag. This book was released on 2007 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Therme Vals, the spa complex built in the Swiss Alps by celebrated architect Peter Zumthor, became an icon of contemporary architecture soon after its opening in 1996. Inspired by the spa's majestic surroundings, Zumthor built the structure on the sharp grade of an Alpine mountain slope with grass-topped roofs to mimic Swiss meadows, captured here in a series of sumptuous images. This is the only book-length study of this singular building. It features the architects own original sketches and plans for its design as well as striking photographs of the structure. Architectural scholar Sigrid Hauser contributes an essay drawing out the connections between the elemental nature of the spa and mythology, bathing, and purity. Annotations by Peter Zumthor on his design concept and the building process elucidate the structure's symbiotic relationship to its natural surroundings, revealing, for example, why he insisted on using locally quarried stone.

Download or read book Drawing written by Sir Peter Cook and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the creative and inventive significance of drawing for architecture, this book by one of its greatest proponents, Peter Cook, is an established classic. It exudes Cook's delight and catholic appetite for the architectural. Readers are provided with perceptive insights at every turn. The book features some of the greatest and most intriguing drawings by architects, ranging from Frank Lloyd Wright, Heath-Robinson, Le Corbusier, and Otto Wagner to Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Arata Isozaki, Eric Owen Moss, Bernard Tschumi, and Lebbeus Woods; as well as key works by Cook and other members of the original Archigram group. For this new edition, Cook provides a substantial new chapter that charts the speed at which the trajectory of drawing is moving. It reflects the increasing sophistication of available software and also the ways in which 'hand drawing' and the 'digital' are being eclipsed by new hybrids—injecting a new momentum to drawing. These 'crossovers' provide a whole new territory as attempts are made to release drawing from the boundaries of a solitary moment, a single-viewing position, or a single referential language. Featuring the likes of Toyo Ito, Perry Culper, Izaskun Chinchilla, Kenny Tsui, Ali Rahim, John Berglund, and Lorene Faure, it leads to fascinating insights into the effect that medium has upon intention and definition of an idea or a place. Is a pencil drawing more attuned to a certain architecture than an ink drawing, or is a particular colour evocative of a certain atmosphere? In a world where a Mayer drawing is creatively contributing something different from a Rhino drawing, there is much to demand of future techniques.

Book Synopsis Konrad Wachsmann and the Grapevine Structure by : Marianne Burkhalter
Download or read book Konrad Wachsmann and the Grapevine Structure written by Marianne Burkhalter and published by Park Publishing (WI). This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds new light on the work of German-born modernist architect Konrad Wachsmann (1901-1980) and his legendary knotted joints. It is based on years of research on Wachsmann's work by Swiss architect Christian Sumi. At the core of this book is Wachsmann's dynamic 'Grapevine Structure', a universal construction element developed with students in the early 1950s at the Chicago Institute of Design. The book also investigates the 'Local Orientation Manipulator' (LOM), an apparatus developed in 1969 by Wachsmann at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles that anticipated the robotic assembly of building components. Moreover, it explores Wachsmann's 'Packaged House System' and his designs for relocatable hangars for the US Air Force. The book features these through concise texts and rich illustrated material, the majority of which are published here for the first time. Fabio Gramazio, Matthias Kohler, and Hannes Mayer (Gramazio Kohler Research, ETH Zurich) revisit Wachsmann's ideas from a contemporary perspective where robotic building processes become increasingly common. An essay by neuroscientist Andreas Burkhalter looks at the phenomenon of knotted joints in the context of similar structures in the human brain. Architectural historian Marko Pogacnik highlights the significance of Wachsmann's lectures at the Salzburg Summer Academy in the late 1950s.

Book Synopsis Forms of Practice by : Irina Davidovici
Download or read book Forms of Practice written by Irina Davidovici and published by GTA Verlag. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1980s and 1990s, German-Swiss architecture achieved worldwide recognition on account of its constructional and aesthetic coherence. Buildings produced by German-Swiss architects appeared to have ethical implications and convey a search for a sence of stability in response to the relativism of postmodernist thinking. Irina Davidovici discusses the cultural and theoretical conditions that gave rise to this architectural style as representing different facets of a single artistic and cultural phenomenon. She brings to light the conflicts implicit between shared, collective values and individual's need for self-expression, between the integrity of the artist and the interests of commercial forces (éditeur).
