Book excerpt: This is neither a manual claiming to be a popular summary nor a systematic treatment of the art of the wall poster. It is an original work, of vast scope, structured into independent essays organised along a cohesive timeline, from 1880 to the second half of the twentieth century, reflecting on various aspects of artistic advertising graphics in an interdisciplinary dimension and with an international perspective. From the establishment of the poster as an innovative form of large-circulation visual communication and from its emancipation from the painting aesthetics of the nineteenth century to the understanding of the influences of advertising on the Pop Art experiences of the 1960s, according to a logic of inverted relations. The constant points of reference show the relations not only with painting but also with graphic processing and design, publishing graphics, original prints and photography; in the background, there also is cinema, decorative arts and urban furnishing. Artists, schools, movements, trade magazines, the book industry, exhibitions and performances, business advertising, political and war propaganda, social topics: these are some of the subjects and phenomena that interact in the history of advertising languages, which have been framed here by the specialist expertise of six authors. There is also the recurrent emergence of the dialects around the instruments and purposes of advertising communication, between practice and experimentation, commercial requirements, professional training and creative demands.

Book excerpt: ""Everything is beautiful,"" raved Andy Warhol, in raptures at the glamour of modern life, consumer society, the world of the media and its stars. And in so saying, he was expressing the feelings of a generation who felt their age was dawning, an age of ""love"" and ""freedom."" In art, too, a new attitude towards the present was making itself felt. Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Tom Wesselmann, Richard Hamilton and many other artists were discovering Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Coca Cola, comics, advertising, household appliances and food cans as an independent aesthetic reality. Popularity and triviality were no longer terms of abuse, but were central to a new understanding of an art whose aim was to break down the barriers between art and life. The author gives us a detailed account of the styles, themes and sources of Pop Art, investigating its development in different countries and providing biographies of its leading exponents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Billy Apple (born Barrie Bates in Auckland, 1935) is New Zealand's most internationally significant living artist and a pioneer of pop and conceptual art. At the Royal College of Art in London from 1959&–62, Apple studied with key contemporaries &– notably David Hockney &– and staged one of the earliest solo exhibitions in the new &‘pop' art after changing his name, in 1962, to &‘Billy Apple'. In 1964 he moved to New York. There, he worked as an art director, developed his art, exhibited extensively with leading artists (notably in the 1964 American Supermarket exhibition with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and others), and established one of the first alternative art spaces &– &‘Apple' &– which hosted some of the new ephemeral activities that enlivened the New York scene in the 1970s. He returned to live in New Zealand in 1990 where he continues to produce his particular brand of conceptual art. Apple's work is held in permanent collections from the Tate to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.This is the first substantial book on Billy Apple's career. Based on over a decade of research all over the world and unprecedented access to Apple's own archive, Billy Apple&®: Life/Work chronicles an extraordinary sixty-year career and the art scenes that have sustained it in London, New York and Auckland. The book includes more than 200 illustrations in colour, with a generous selection of reproductions of Apple's works as well as other illustrative material.
