Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Perugino In 1486 Perugino left Rome, and the next twenty years of his life were spent in continual wanderings. The practical business qualities of the man, his energy and industry, were as remarkable as his artistic genius. He had workshops both in Perugia and Florence, where he employed a number of scholars and assistants to execute the orders which reached him from all parts of Italy; while he himself traveled backwards and forwards between the two cities, and found time to visit many other places and to undertake many other commissions. In 1489 he went to Orvieto, where he agreed to finish the work that Fra Angelico had left undone in one of the chapels of the cathedral. In 1491 he was back in Rome, decorating the palace of Cardinal della Rovere, who had imperiously desired the citizens of Orvieto 'to send him back his favorite artist. In 1494 he visited Venice, and entered into an agreement (which he never fulfilled) to paint the Council Hall of the Ducal Palace. In March, 1496, he was at Perugia, a few months later he paid a second visit to Venice, and in the following year spent several months at the little town of F ano, painting a large altar-piece. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Francesco Raibolini Called Francia Besides Vasari, there is, so far as I know, but one- life of Francia available for the English reader - the very slight one issued by Mrs. Ady in 1881, as part of a small book that she wrote on "Mantegna and Francia." The works on this artist in Italian also are mostly very scarce, having been issued many years ago, some as far back as 1630, and they are consequently not of much service to the ordinary student. There are a few works to be met with in French, notably the important one on the Bolognese painters issued in 1875 by Blanc and Delaborde. A variety of facts regarding the pictures by this master has, however, been lately discovered; and it seemed to me that a fitting moment had arrived to issue a new work on the artist, especially as a study of his works had come naturally in sequence to follow my study of the paintings of Perugino. The chief claim that I can make in these pages is that they represent the result of a great deal of careful and personal hard work in Bologna, and that they contain several new items of information about the artist, which it was my good fortune to light upon in searching some of the records of that delightful city. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italian Cities, Vol. 1 To find the vanished centuries that wrought this transformation one must ride northeast for seven hours more to the Adriatic marshes. Fourteen hundred years ago, when Italy flamed behind the horsemen of Alaric, the Emperor Honorius fled to the strongest city in the land, Ravenna, and with his corrupt and motley court went one noble fugitive, the genius of the Arts, who illustrates for all time the name of her asylum. In those days Ravenna was still a port; but the sea, which made her greatness, has by receding de stroyed her political importance, thus leaving her to hold the more surely, in her slow decay, the buildings of a time which she alone among cities fully repte sents, a time when pictorial Christian art had just emerged from her prenatal condition of the cata combs into the light of imperial favor, and the archi tecture of the Roman was beginning to be that of the Christian. Thus Ravenna became the splendid reliquary which preserved the dry bones of antique art to be quickened by the breath of the Renaissance. A unique link in the chain, she is the anomaly of Italian towns, a city of antitheses; of pure water in the midst of poisonous marshes, of impregnable refuge among treacherous morasses.
