Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old and the New Peru: A Story of the Ancient Inheritance and the Modern Growth and Enterprise of a Great Nation In the preparation of this work, I found that the knowledge I had previously gained through close association with the people of Latin America during more than fifteen years' journeying in these countries was of the greatest advantage. Travelling in Peru was more like Visiting among friends than studying the manners and customs of a foreign people, and the uniform kindness and hospitality everywhere Shown me made my experience in this beautiful land one of constant pleasure and of enduring memory. I sincerely appre ciate the great assistance rendered me in securing information from government sources, from the public libraries and from many kind friends in every part of Peru, and I take this opportunity of expressing my thanks, from my heart. It is impossible to live in Peru without learning to love the country and its people, and while I have tried to allow no partiality to influence my judgment in writing this book, I cannot do otherwise than present to the reader what I found most interesting in my own study of the Old and the New Peru. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Native Religions of Mexico and PeruThey say that the Sun lives, and that he does everything. But when one does anything, he is near to the thing he does whereas many things take place while the Sun is absent. It therefore cannot be he who does everything. And again, if he were a living being, would he not be wearied by his perpetual journeyings? If he were alive, he would experience fatigue, as we do; and if he were free, he would visit other parts of the heavens which he never traverses. In truth, he seems like a thing held to its task that always measures the same course, or like an arrow that flies where it is shot and not where it wills itself.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Peru IT can hardly be said that a town of a popula tion of three thousand six hundred and fifty-two souls, dating back but about twenty years to its first rude tenement and solitary family, can have any history. The events of any public interest are so few, and their importance so small, that no reasonable hepe can be entertained that their re cital will be any thing but a matter of indifi'enr ance to others than the present or former resi dents, or those connected with them by ties of consanguinity, or having an interest in its advance ment and prosperity. It is true that at some future time, the record may be useful to the historian, if it should be so fortunate as to survive. The statistics have been collected with care and con siderable labor, and are believed to be correct and reliable. Beyond this the writer claims no merit for the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Tribes of Eastern Peru Minister of Finance, Senor Leguia, now President of the Republic, and were the recipients of many courtesies and hospitalities from both Americans and Peruvians. From Lima we continued to Are quipa, where is situated the Harvard Observatory, which city became our base during the time we were in Peru. A short period was devoted to preparation for the actual field work and to short side trips to La Paz and other nearby places. Little could be learned of conditions in the interior beyond the mountains, and so the first journey was somewhat in the nature of a preliminary in vestigation of the field. Book Synopsis The Chankas and the Priest by : Sabine Hyland
Download or read book The Chankas and the Priest written by Sabine Hyland and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-05-02 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does society deal with a serial killer in its midst? What if the murderer is a Catholic priest living among native villagers in colonial Peru? In The Chankas and the Priest, Sabine Hyland chronicles the horrifying story of Father Juan Bautista de Albadán, a Spanish priest to the Chanka people of Pampachiri in Peru from 1601 to 1611. During his reign of terror over his Andean parish, Albadán was guilty of murder, sexual abuse, sadistic torture, and theft from his parishioners, amassing a personal fortune at their expense. For ten years, he escaped punishment for these crimes by deceiving and outwitting his superiors in the colonial government and church administration. Drawing on a remarkable collection of documents found in archives in the Americas and Europe, including a rare cache of Albadán’s candid family letters, Hyland reveals what life was like for the Chankas under this corrupt and brutal priest, and how his actions sparked the instability that would characterize Chanka political and social history for the next 123 years. Through this tale, she vividly portrays the colonial church and state of Peru as well as the history of Chanka ethnicity, the nature of Spanish colonialism, and the changing nature of Chanka politics and kinship from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century.
