Book Synopsis Singular Perturbation Methods in Control by : Petar Kokotovic
Download or read book Singular Perturbation Methods in Control written by Petar Kokotovic and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singular perturbations and time-scale techniques were introduced to control engineering in the late 1960s and have since become common tools for the modeling, analysis, and design of control systems. In this SIAM Classics edition of the 1986 book, the original text is reprinted in its entirety (along with a new preface), providing once again the theoretical foundation for representative control applications. This book continues to be essential in many ways. It lays down the foundation of singular perturbation theory for linear and nonlinear systems, it presents the methodology in a pedagogical way that is not available anywhere else, and it illustrates the theory with many solved examples, including various physical examples and applications. So while new developments may go beyond the topics covered in this book, they are still based on the methodology described here, which continues to be their common starting point.

The heart of the book is the singularly perturbed optimal control systems, which are notorious for demanding excessive computational costs. The book addresses both continuous control systems (described by differential equations) and discrete control systems (characterised by difference equations).

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications NONSMOOTH ANALYSIS AND GEOMETRIC METHODS IN DETERMINISTIC OPTIMAL CONTROL is based on the proceedings of a workshop that was an integral part of the 1992-93 IMA program on "Control Theory. " The purpose of this workshop was to concentrate on powerful mathematical techniques that have been de veloped in deterministic optimal control theory after the basic foundations of the theory (existence theorems, maximum principle, dynamic program ming, sufficiency theorems for sufficiently smooth fields of extremals) were laid out in the 1960s. These advanced techniques make it possible to derive much more detailed information about the structure of solutions than could be obtained in the past, and they support new algorithmic approaches to the calculation of such solutions. We thank Boris S. Mordukhovich and Hector J. Sussmann for organiz ing the workshop and editing the proceedings. We also take this oppor tunity to thank the National Science Foundation and the Army Research Office, whose financial support made the workshop possible. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. v PREFACE This volume contains the proceedings of the workshop on Nonsmooth Analysis and Geometric Methods in Deterministic Optimal Control held at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications on February 8-17, 1993 during a special year devoted to Control Theory and its Applications. Book Synopsis Advances in Sensitivity Analysis and Parametric Programming by : Tomas Gal
Download or read book Advances in Sensitivity Analysis and Parametric Programming written by Tomas Gal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard view of Operations Research/Management Science (OR/MS) dichotomizes the field into deterministic and probabilistic (nondeterministic, stochastic) subfields. This division can be seen by reading the contents page of just about any OR/MS textbook. The mathematical models that help to define OR/MS are usually presented in terms of one subfield or the other. This separation comes about somewhat artificially: academic courses are conveniently subdivided with respect to prerequisites; an initial overview of OR/MS can be presented without requiring knowledge of probability and statistics; text books are conveniently divided into two related semester courses, with deterministic models coming first; academics tend to specialize in one subfield or the other; and practitioners also tend to be expert in a single subfield. But, no matter who is involved in an OR/MS modeling situation (deterministic or probabilistic - academic or practitioner), it is clear that a proper and correct treatment of any problem situation is accomplished only when the analysis cuts across this dichotomy.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Shape Optimization by : Jan Sokolowski
Download or read book Introduction to Shape Optimization written by Jan Sokolowski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is motivated largely by a desire to solve shape optimization prob lems that arise in applications, particularly in structural mechanics and in the optimal control of distributed parameter systems. Many such problems can be formulated as the minimization of functionals defined over a class of admissible domains. Shape optimization is quite indispensable in the design and construction of industrial structures. For example, aircraft and spacecraft have to satisfy, at the same time, very strict criteria on mechanical performance while weighing as little as possible. The shape optimization problem for such a structure consists in finding a geometry of the structure which minimizes a given functional (e. g. such as the weight of the structure) and yet simultaneously satisfies specific constraints (like thickness, strain energy, or displacement bounds). The geometry of the structure can be considered as a given domain in the three-dimensional Euclidean space. The domain is an open, bounded set whose topology is given, e. g. it may be simply or doubly connected. The boundary is smooth or piecewise smooth, so boundary value problems that are defined in the domain and associated with the classical partial differential equations of mathematical physics are well posed. In general the cost functional takes the form of an integral over the domain or its boundary where the integrand depends smoothly on the solution of a boundary value problem.
Book Synopsis Data Assimilation for the Earth System by : Richard Swinbank
Download or read book Data Assimilation for the Earth System written by Richard Swinbank and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data assimilation is the combination of information from observations and models of a particular physical system in order to get the best possible estimate of the state of that system. The technique has wide applications across a range of earth sciences, a major application being the production of operational weather forecasts. Others include oceanography, atmospheric chemistry, climate studies, and hydrology. Data Assimilation for the Earth System is a comprehensive survey of both the theory of data assimilation and its application in a range of earth system sciences. Data assimilation is a key technique in the analysis of remote sensing observations and is thus particularly useful for those analysing the wealth of measurements from recent research satellites. This book is suitable for postgraduate students and those working on the application of data assimilation in meteorology, oceanography and other earth sciences.
Book Synopsis Modeling and Control of a Large Nuclear Reactor by : S R Shimjith
Download or read book Modeling and Control of a Large Nuclear Reactor written by S R Shimjith and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-08-10 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control analysis and design of large nuclear reactors requires a suitable mathematical model representing the steady state and dynamic behavior of the reactor with reasonable accuracy. This task is, however, quite challenging because of several complex dynamic phenomena existing in a reactor. Quite often, the models developed would be of prohibitively large order, non-linear and of complex structure not readily amenable for control studies. Moreover, the existence of simultaneously occurring dynamic variations at different speeds makes the mathematical model susceptible to numerical ill-conditioning, inhibiting direct application of standard control techniques. This monograph introduces a technique for mathematical modeling of large nuclear reactors in the framework of multi-point kinetics, to obtain a comparatively smaller order model in standard state space form thus overcoming these difficulties. It further brings in innovative methods for controller design for systems exhibiting multi-time-scale property, with emphasis on three-time-scale systems.

Book Synopsis Problems and Methods of Optimal Control by : L.D. Akulenko
Download or read book Problems and Methods of Optimal Control written by L.D. Akulenko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numerous applications of optimal control theory have given an incentive to the development of approximate techniques aimed at the construction of control laws and the optimization of dynamical systems. These constructive approaches rely on small parameter methods (averaging, regular and singular perturbations), which are well-known and have been proven to be efficient in nonlinear mechanics and optimal control theory (maximum principle, variational calculus and dynamic programming). An essential feature of the procedures for solving optimal control problems consists in the necessity for dealing with two-point boundary-value problems for nonlinear and, as a rule, nonsmooth multi-dimensional sets of differential equations. This circumstance complicates direct applications of the above-mentioned perturbation methods which have been developed mostly for investigating initial-value (Cauchy) problems. There is now a need for a systematic presentation of constructive analytical per turbation methods relevant to optimal control problems for nonlinear systems. The purpose of this book is to meet this need in the English language scientific literature and to present consistently small parameter techniques relating to the constructive investigation of some classes of optimal control problems which often arise in prac tice. This book is based on a revised and modified version of the monograph: L. D. Akulenko "Asymptotic methods in optimal control". Moscow: Nauka, 366 p. (in Russian).
Download or read book Optimal Filtering written by V.N. Fomin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to an investigation of some important problems of mod ern filtering theory concerned with systems of 'any nature being able to per ceive, store and process an information and apply it for control and regulation'. (The above quotation is taken from the preface to [27]). Despite the fact that filtering theory is l'argely worked out (and its major issues such as the Wiener-Kolmogorov theory of optimal filtering of stationary processes and Kalman-Bucy recursive filtering theory have become classical) a development of the theory is far from complete. A great deal of recent activity in this area is observed, researchers are trying consistently to generalize famous results, extend them to more broad classes of processes, realize and justify more simple procedures for processing measurement data in order to obtain more efficient filtering algorithms. As to nonlinear filter ing, it remains much as fragmentary. Here much progress has been made by R. L. Stratonovich and his successors in the area of filtering of Markov processes. In this volume an effort is made to advance in certain of these issues. The monograph has evolved over many years, coming of age by stages. First it was an impressive job of gathering together the bulk of the impor tant contributions to estimation theory, an understanding and moderniza tion of some of its results and methods, with the intention of applying them to recursive filtering problems.
Book Synopsis Mathematical Theory of Control Systems Design by : V.N. Afanasiev
Download or read book Mathematical Theory of Control Systems Design written by V.N. Afanasiev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Give, and it shall be given unto you. ST. LUKE, VI, 38. The book is based on several courses of lectures on control theory and appli cations which were delivered by the authors for a number of years at Moscow Electronics and Mathematics University. The book, originally written in Rus sian, was first published by Vysshaya Shkola (Higher School) Publishing House in Moscow in 1989. In preparing a new edition of the book we planned to make only minor changes in the text. However, we soon realized that we like many scholars working in control theory had learned many new things and had had many new insights into control theory and its applications since the book was first published. Therefore, we rewrote the book especially for the English edition. So, this is substantially a new book with many new topics. The book consists of an introduction and four parts. Part One deals with the fundamentals of modern stability theory: general results concerning stability and instability, sufficient conditions for the stability of linear systems, methods for determining the stability or instability of systems of various type, theorems on stability under random disturbances.
Book Synopsis Variational Calculus, Optimal Control and Applications by : Leonhard Bittner
Download or read book Variational Calculus, Optimal Control and Applications written by Leonhard Bittner and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 12th conference on "Variational Calculus, Optimal Control and Applications" took place September 23-27, 1996, in Trassenheide on the Baltic Sea island of Use dom. Seventy mathematicians from ten countries participated. The preceding eleven conferences, too, were held in places of natural beauty throughout West Pomerania; the first time, in 1972, in Zinnowitz, which is in the immediate area of Trassenheide. The conferences were founded, and led ten times, by Professor Bittner (Greifswald) and Professor KlCitzler (Leipzig), who both celebrated their 65th birthdays in 1996. The 12th conference in Trassenheide, was, therefore, also dedicated to L. Bittner and R. Klotzler. Both scientists made a lasting impression on control theory in the former GDR. Originally, the conferences served to promote the exchange of research results. In the first years, most of the lectures were theoretical, but in the last few conferences practical applications have been given more attention. Besides their pioneering theoretical works, both honorees have also always dealt with applications problems. L. Bittner has, for example, examined optimal control of nuclear reactors and associated safety aspects. Since 1992 he has been working on applications in optimal control in flight dynamics. R. Klotzler recently applied his results on optimal autobahn planning to the south tangent in Leipzig. The contributions published in these proceedings reflect the trend to practical problems; starting points are often questions from flight dynamics.
