Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, a resource-oriented perception of sustainable management is presented. Firms that decide to act more sustainable have to bear in mind that they do not only need resources for economic activities today, but that they will need these tomorrow as well. This leads to contradictory management rationalities firms must deal with. The author presents his findings as regards the development of environmental and social responsibility and introduces a theory of management ecology. He takes a close look at the contradictions businesses have to face when governing their activity towards sustainability. Moreover, he identifies different notions of the resource term in management studies and develops a “sustainable resource management” which could help businesses redirect their economic activities from a solely profit-oriented to a resource-oriented way of operating.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to meet the urgent need for a comprehensive and definitive introduction and teaching text on corporate environmental management. It aims to become the standard textbook for courses examining how business can take the environment into account while also providing an accessible and thorough overview of this increasingly multidisciplinary subject for practitioners. Written by the internationally acknowledged experts Stefan Schaltegger and Roger Burritt (authors of the highly influential Contemporary Environmental Accounting) along with Holger Petersen, the book invites the reader to join in an exploration of the ways in which companies can engage in environmental management and why such engagement can be profitable for business. The reader is invited to: examine whether the contents reflect their own experience, takes their experience further, or opposes their own views; note which of the ideas presented are especially important, add to those ideas, or encourage a reaction (positive or negative); answer questions creatively (based on their own perspective of the issues); encourage themselves to be inspired by questions, which can be investigated further through other written sources of information, such as books you will be guided to through the bibliography, the Internet or the general media; and think about and plan the ways in which the knowledge provided can be implemented in your own situation. The book is organised into four main sections. First, the fundamental ideas and linkages behind business management, the environment and sustainable development are briefly but clearly sketched. The second part of the book outlines the criteria against which environmentally oriented business management can be assessed and the fields of action in which success can be achieved. The third part presents a discussion and examples of strategies for environmental management, which are linked, in the fourth part, to the essential tools of environmental management, especially green marketing, environmental accounting and eco-control. The book is full of case studies and examples related to the main contents of each chapter and each chapter provides a number of questions for the student or reader to address. An Introduction to Corporate Environmental Management is both a textbook and a sourcebook. The reader can either work through the material in a structured way or dip into the content and follow up on specific areas of interest. The materials are designed to be used for understanding and reference, rather than to be learned by heart. The primary aim is for the reader to obtain a practical understanding of the relationship between management and environmental issues which can be applied in day-to-day situations-whether as part of a student's wider view of management or within the practitioner's real-world situation. It will be essential reading for many years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital technologies have opened up new possibilities for the cultural sector. Many museums are represented on the internet with various materials. Augmented reality and virtual reality offer immersion experiences even for existing museums. However, for many topics there are no museums and exhibitions. The author group "Virtual Museums Forum" is now presenting a contribution to the discussion that focuses on museums in the metaverse. It aims to promote conceptual considerations for implementing virtual museums. This raises two fundamental questions: "What is a virtual museum?" and "For which topics or constellations can a virtual museum be particularly suitable?" This book provides a pragmatic answer to the first question. Comprehensive theses are then put forward for the second question and implementation of virtual museums. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Predictions are that sustainability becomes the next big topic for Human Resource Management after internationalization and globalization. This book gives new answers to these questions: - How can HRM contribute to attracting, developing and retaining highly qualified human resources over time? - How can a paradox perspective contribute to understanding and coping with paradoxical tensions? - How can sustainability be used as a ‘deliberate strategy’ for HRM? The conceptual part of the book looks at the notion of sustainability, opens it up for Strategic HRM and identifies blind spots in Strategic HRM theory. Paradox theory is introduced as an analytical framework for Sustainable HRM. Initial suggestions are made for sustainability strategies and for coping with paradoxes and tensions. The exploratory part examines how 50 European Multinationals communicate their understanding of sustainability and HRM and which HR issues and practices they are linking to the topic.

It basically consists of treating biomass and wastes in a wet form, under pressure and temperature condition. This approach is becoming more and more attractive, as new feedstock and applications are appearing on the scene of bioeconomy and bioenergy. The hydrothermal processing of various type of biomass, waste, and residues, thus, raised the interest of many researchers and companies around the world, together with downstream upgrading processes and technologies: solid products as biochar, for instance, or liquid ones as crude bioliquids, are finding new market opportunities in circular economy schemes. The Special Issue collects recent innovative research works in the field, from basic to applied research, as well as pilot industrial applications/demo. It is a valuable set of references for those investing time and effort in research in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents and discusses current issues and innovative solution approaches for land management in a European context. Manifold sustainability issues are closely interconnected with land use practices. Throughout the world, we face increasing conflict over the use of land as well as competition for land. Drawing on experience in sustainable land management gained from seven years of the FONA programme (Research for Sustainable Development, conducted under the auspices of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research), the book stresses and highlights co-design processes within the “co-creation of knowledge”, involving collaboration in transdisciplinary research processes between academia and other stakeholders. The book begins with an overview of the current state of land use practices and the subsequent need to manage land resources more sustainably. New system solutions and governance approaches in sustainable land management are presented from a European perspective on land use. The volume also addresses how to use new modes of knowledge transfer between science and practice. New perspectives in sustainable land management and methods of combining knowledge and action are presented to a broad readership in land system sciences and environmental sciences, social sciences and geosciences. This book received the Gerd Albers Award. The prize is awarded by the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The boundless long-term retention of information about people's lives on the world wide web jeopardizes their reputation and deprives them of a fresh start. Mr. Costeja González' reputation, for example, was damaged by twelve year-old newspaper articles on Google attesting him a poor creditworthiness (ECJ C-131/12). His case triggered a public discussion about creating a "forgetting Internet" and counteracting the "age of everlasting personal data retention." This book argues that the world wide web endangers people's reputation by presenting them and their online profiles short of temporal context. Drawing on Heidegger's and Ricoeur's philosophy of time, Walzer's spheres of justice, Solove's visionary pragmatism for privacy and Nissenbaum's theory of privacy as contextual integrity, the book proposes safeguarding the "temporal contextual integrity" of personal information online. The author suggests designing web user interfaces for making the passage of time within people's online representations prominent. With time-sensitive interfaces, employers start ignoring job seekers' obsolete reputation in online labor markets. Technology requirements for a "forgetting Internet" are discussed.
