Book excerpt: Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approaches are becoming increasingly central to visions of decarbonizing national economies. The past few years have seen an increasing number of countries committed to net-zero targets, preceded by a surge of modelled 1.5°C scenarios envisioning large-scale future CDR deployment. The prospect of CDR deployment raises new complex socio-ecological challenges, and presents new deep uncertainties. These complexities, challenges and uncertainties cannot be investigated using solely the techno-economic modelling and environmental risk-assessment methods that currently dominate the construction of policy-relevant knowledge on CDR. Social sciences and the humanities perspectives on CDR are often restricted to instrumental tasks such as investigating public acceptance, overcoming social resistance or supporting the development of integrated assessment models. There is a need for more diverse investigations of CDR which include not only environmental and techno-economic dimensions, but also explore key societal complexities, challenges and uncertainties. Against this backdrop, we call for submissions on CDR stemming from perspectives within the social sciences and humanities. We encourage novel empirical and theoretical contributions on: – CDR-related policy design or analyses of recent policy developments at sub-national, national and international levels of governance, e.g., in context of climate targets and strategies, climate tipping points, mitigation deterrence or societal transformations.

Book excerpt: "British and Canadian Perspectives on International Law" examines the impact of public international law on the United Kingdom's and Canada's domestic legal systems. It also analyses the contributions of British and Canadian practice to the development of international norms. Topics addressed include international criminal law, international humanitarian law, human rights and human security, asylum, trade, jurisdiction, 'reception law' and media portrayals of international law. Whereas international law scholarship usually takes a global, regional or national approach, this book's chapters are written by leading scholars and practitioners from both countries and provide unique comparative views. While there remains much in common between the two states' understandings of international law, recent developments have shown significant points of departure.

This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Recession and the turn towards all forms of protectionism stress the relevance of international trade policy. With the global economy undergoing deep structural changes, the negotiations between Canada and the EU on a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) present a real-time experiment that sheds light on the direction that the relationships between two economic units of the G8 will take. For Canada, an agreement with the EU would end its current dependency on the US; for the EU, an agreement with Canada would be a first with a G8-economy and indicate how its new trade strategy ‘Global Europe’ will look like. This book is the first to simultaneously analyze the undercurrents of this project and introduce the main topics at hand. CETA is much more than a simple free trade agreement, its breadth covers regulatory aspects in goods, services, and finance; the opening of public procurement markets; attitudes and policies of Canadian provinces towards liberalization; climate policies and international leadership claims of the EU in comparison to Canadian policy attempts; the challenges of the Euro project and the reform efforts; and the challenges of the Euro as a international reserve currency. CETA is a challenging project that will kick-start enormous changes in trade policy-making as well as in market openness in Canada. It will mark the EU’s efforts to re-make the Atlantic Economy. This book provides deep insights into the ambiguity of the project and addresses the implications of a rapidly changing global economy for trade policy. Offering analysis of the financial industry, banking, trade policy, climate change strategy, and the Euro exchange rate, this book should be of interest to students and policy-makers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holdgate's 1979 book A Perspective of Environmental Pollution was an intensely important volume when it was first published, looking as it did to contextualise and extensively review the effects of pollution throughout the 1970s. As founding director of the Department of the Environment's Central Unit on Environmental Pollution, Dr Holdgate was eminently well qualified to provide this analysis. Holdgate takes an ecological view of pollutants, pathways and environmental change, whilst also looking at international pollution and the way in which patterns of pollution are monitored and costed. Whilst his primary analysis is scientific, he also writes confidently and convincingly on the legal, administrative and economic effects of industrial processes on the environment. This book will continue to be of use to anyone with an interest in the impact and assessment of environmental pollution.

By bringing together hundreds of scientists, peer reviewers and collaborating institutions and partners, the GEO reports build on sound scientific knowledge to provide governments, local authorities, businesses and individual citizens with the information needed to guide societies to a truly sustainable world by 2050. GEO-6 outlines the current state of the environment, illustrates possible future environmental trends and analyses the effectiveness of policies. This flagship report shows how governments can put us on the path to a truly sustainable future - emphasising that urgent and inclusive action is needed to achieve a healthy planet with healthy people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the health effects of many aspects of life, from diet to marital status, have been extensively explored, little study has been made of the health effects of work. Covering such topics as on-the-job dangers, the role of unions in worker protection, and occupational health in both developed and developing countries, this collection of articles conclusively demonstrates the negative impact that neglect of citizens' working lives has on pubic health. With more Americans dying each year from job-related causes than were killed in a decade of combat in Vietnam, "Health and Work Under Capitalism" is a long-overdue and unusually significant book.
