Book excerpt: The volume offers to the reader a multi-faceted dialogue between noted experts from two major agricultural countries, both founding members of the Word Trade Organisation, each one with different stakes in the great globalisation game. After providing the recent historical background of agricultural policies in India and France, the contributors address burning issues related to market and regulation, food security and food safety, the expected benefits from the WTO and the genuine problems raised by the new forms of international trade in agriculture, including the sensitive question of intellectual property rights in bio-technologies. This informed volume underlines the necessity of moving beyond the North-South divide, in order to address the real challenges of the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India is emerging as a key player in the development cooperation arena, not only because of the increasing volume and reach of its south-south cooperation but more so because of its leadership and advocacy for the development of a distinctly southern development discourse and knowledge generation. This book traces and analyses the evolution of Indian development cooperation. It highlights its significance both to global development and as an effective tool of Indian foreign policy. Focussing on how India has played an important role in supporting development efforts of partner countries in South Asia and beyond through its various initiatives in the realm of development cooperation, the book tracks the evolution, genesis, and the challenges India faces in the current international context. The contributions provide a rich mix of academic and government, policy and practice, Indian and external perspectives. Theory is complemented with empirical research, and case studies on countries and sectors as well as comparisons with other aid providing countries are presented. The book is of interest to researchers and policy makers in the field of development cooperation, the role of emerging powers from the South, international development, foreign policy and global political economy.

Book excerpt: This book provides fresh insights into the theory and policy of regional and multilateral trade from the perspective of developing countries. With the collapse of talks at the WTO Doha round, regionalism has proliferated in the form of Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs). This in turn has raised a number of critical issues in global trade policy debate. Given the implication of RTAs and WTO negotiations on economic development, the book emphasises that it is essential to examine the macro and micro effects of international trade flows on welfare, revenue, poverty and environment, particularly in the light of diversities, heterogeneities and limited financial capacity of developing countries. It discusses various issues of trade, investment, poverty, gender and legal dimensions in the regional and multilateral framework and is a useful guide to formulation of trade and economic policies for the benefit of developing countries. The book will be of primary interest to those in economics, commerce and management, and will be a useful reference for alternative research in this area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global value chains (GVCs) powered the surge of international trade after 1990 and now account for almost half of all trade. This shift enabled an unprecedented economic convergence: poor countries grew rapidly and began to catch up with richer countries. Since the 2008 global financial crisis, however, the growth of trade has been sluggish and the expansion of GVCs has stalled. Meanwhile, serious threats have emerged to the model of trade-led growth. New technologies could draw production closer to the consumer and reduce the demand for labor. And trade conflicts among large countries could lead to a retrenchment or a segmentation of GVCs. World Development Report 2020: Trading for Development in the Age of Global Value Chains examines whether there is still a path to development through GVCs and trade. It concludes that technological change is, at this stage, more a boon than a curse. GVCs can continue to boost growth, create better jobs, and reduce poverty provided that developing countries implement deeper reforms to promote GVC participation; industrial countries pursue open, predictable policies; and all countries revive multilateral cooperation.

Book excerpt: This book offers a collection of distinguished contributions that identify current growth accelerators in India, and suggest policies and strategies to make India’s growth more sustainable and inclusive. The papers are divided into three sections, the first of which focuses on issues related to industrial growth in India. The discussions include India’s industrial development (manufacturing, construction and mining); role of manufacturing; global value chains; and of environment in industrial development. In turn, section II deals with issues related to trade and FDI as accelerators of India’s growth. The respective chapters explore the changing patterns of trade, impacts of technology, and spill-over effects of FDI, to name but a few. Lastly, the third section discusses employment-related issues like measurement of labour input, the dichotomy of the Indian labour market, the nature of firms and employment generation, and impacts of technology on employment. Given its scope and focus, the book offers an invaluable resource for researchers and policymakers alike.

Book excerpt: The striking aspect of India's expanding presence in global trade is related to India's increased integration with Asian countries. While the dominance of developed countries in India's trade has reduced since the late 1990s, the shares of Asian developing countries in India's exports and imports have gone up significantly. Although developed countries, despite a decline in their share over time, continue to remain more important as destinations of India's exports, the gap between the shares of developed countries and Asian developing countries in India's imports has reduced more sharply. That is, Asian developing countries have increasingly gained more importance as sources of India's imports. India's foreign trade policy is mainly focused on increasing volume of bilateral trade with several economic cooperation arrangements with different countries. The on-going negotiations between India and the ASEAN representatives and India and EU representatives during the last few years have given rise to considerable interest among researchers across the world. The proposed research aims at applying the Gravity model to understand the direction of trade, volume of trade, capital flows among the countries in EU and ASEAN and their significant impact on India's trade. The trade of India responds more than proportionally to size and less than proportionally to distance. The direction of India's trading volume with these trading blocs (ASEAN and EU) significantly explains the kind of free trade agreements formulated with both the blocs. India trades more with ASEAN countries rather than with countries in the EU. Bivariate regression analysis, multivariate regression analysis, pooled OLS regression model and fixed effect panel data regression model are used for the analysis.

Book excerpt: The G20 representing the world's major developed and developing countries is witnessing a troika for the very first time of developing countries--Indonesia, India, and Brazil. India at the helm of the G20 presidency can strengthen its ties while shouldering the responsibility to lead the world to economic recovery. India's priorities with respect to trade and supply chain resilience can only be understood if there exists a background on the trade relationship between India and the G20 countries. This paper develops the linkage between technology-intensive exports and GVC participation for the period 1995-2018. The results point towards the importance of forward linkages for India's exports of both high and low-tech exports and the backward linkage for medium-tech exports. The results show a connection between technological capabilities and exports to G20 nations through India's participation in the GVC. In light of this, this paper offers guidance for timely and well-informed sector-specific strategies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, the percentage of the world’s population living on less than a dollar a day has been cut in half. How much of that improvement is because of—or in spite of—globalization? While anti-globalization activists mount loud critiques and the media report breathlessly on globalization’s perils and promises, economists have largely remained silent, in part because of an entrenched institutional divide between those who study poverty and those who study trade and finance. Globalization and Poverty bridges that gap, bringing together experts on both international trade and poverty to provide a detailed view of the effects of globalization on the poor in developing nations, answering such questions as: Do lower import tariffs improve the lives of the poor? Has increased financial integration led to more or less poverty? How have the poor fared during various currency crises? Does food aid hurt or help the poor? Poverty, the contributors show here, has been used as a popular and convenient catchphrase by parties on both sides of the globalization debate to further their respective arguments. Globalization and Poverty provides the more nuanced understanding necessary to move that debate beyond the slogans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural transformation depends not only on how much countries export but also on what they export and with whom they trade. This paper breaks new ground in analyzing India’s exports by the technological content, quality, sophistication, and complexity of the export basket. We identify five priority areas for policies: (1) reduction of trade costs, at and behind the border; (2) further liberalization of FDI including through simplification of regulations and procedures; (3) improving infrastructure including in urban areas to enhance manufacturing and services in cities; (4) preparing labor resources (skills) and markets (flexibility) for the technological progress that will shape jobs in the years ahead; and (5) creating an enabling environment for innovation and entrepreneurship to draw the economy into higher productivity activities.
