This shift enabled an unprecedented economic convergence: poor countries grew rapidly and began to catch up with richer countries. Since the 2008 global financial crisis, however, the growth of trade has been sluggish and the expansion of GVCs has stalled. Meanwhile, serious threats have emerged to the model of trade-led growth. New technologies could draw production closer to the consumer and reduce the demand for labor. And trade conflicts among large countries could lead to a retrenchment or a segmentation of GVCs. World Development Report 2020: Trading for Development in the Age of Global Value Chains examines whether there is still a path to development through GVCs and trade. It concludes that technological change is, at this stage, more a boon than a curse. GVCs can continue to boost growth, create better jobs, and reduce poverty provided that developing countries implement deeper reforms to promote GVC participation; industrial countries pursue open, predictable policies; and all countries revive multilateral cooperation.

Book excerpt: The striking aspect of India's expanding presence in global trade is related to India's increased integration with Asian countries. While the dominance of developed countries in India's trade has reduced since the late 1990s, the shares of Asian developing countries in India's exports and imports have gone up significantly. Although developed countries, despite a decline in their share over time, continue to remain more important as destinations of India's exports, the gap between the shares of developed countries and Asian developing countries in India's imports has reduced more sharply. That is, Asian developing countries have increasingly gained more importance as sources of India's imports. India's foreign trade policy is mainly focused on increasing volume of bilateral trade with several economic cooperation arrangements with different countries. The on-going negotiations between India and the ASEAN representatives and India and EU representatives during the last few years have given rise to considerable interest among researchers across the world. The proposed research aims at applying the Gravity model to understand the direction of trade, volume of trade, capital flows among the countries in EU and ASEAN and their significant impact on India's trade. The trade of India responds more than proportionally to size and less than proportionally to distance. The direction of India's trading volume with these trading blocs (ASEAN and EU) significantly explains the kind of free trade agreements formulated with both the blocs. India trades more with ASEAN countries rather than with countries in the EU. Bivariate regression analysis, multivariate regression analysis, pooled OLS regression model and fixed effect panel data regression model are used for the analysis.

India at the helm of the G20 presidency can strengthen its ties while shouldering the responsibility to lead the world to economic recovery. India's priorities with respect to trade and supply chain resilience can only be understood if there exists a background on the trade relationship between India and the G20 countries. This paper develops the linkage between technology-intensive exports and GVC participation for the period 1995-2018. The results point towards the importance of forward linkages for India's exports of both high and low-tech exports and the backward linkage for medium-tech exports. The results show a connection between technological capabilities and exports to G20 nations through India's participation in the GVC. In light of this, this paper offers guidance for timely and well-informed sector-specific strategies.
